I’m a fan of ancient names, and am on the look-out for some more (I seem to have a particular affinity for Latin/Greek names). In fact, the majority of our most likely names right now are very ancient ([name]Caius[/name], [name]Amias[/name], [name]Darius[/name], etc).
However, I wanna make sure we don’t miss the perfect name, so I thought I’d see if anyone in the nameberry world has some knowledge of some other ancient names that would make for great baby boy names.
Any and all names are welcomed, I’d love it if this post were to result in a big ole’ list of names I haven’t yet encountered.
Some of the ones I’ve found that I quite like include:
Here are some ancient names that I like: [name]Felix[/name], [name]Cassius[/name], [name]Lysander[/name], [name]Augustus[/name], [name]Rufus[/name] and [name]Lucius[/name].
Well I feel like I’m in the right place as I adore all of: [name]Augustus[/name], [name]Cassius[/name], [name]Evander[/name], [name]Thaddaeus[/name], [name]Atlas[/name], and [name]Demetrius[/name].
Some of my other favourites:
[name]Cyrus[/name] - ancient Greek form of a Persian name. Used by Persians and Jews pretty continuously since then, and by English speakers since the Purtans.
[name]Lysander[/name] - Greek
[name]Leander[/name] - Greek
[name]Hadrian[/name] - [name]Roman[/name]
[name]Crispus[/name] - [name]Roman[/name]
[name]Decimus[/name] - [name]Roman[/name].
[name]Leonidas[/name] - Greek
[name]Silas[/name] - Greek
[name]Felix[/name] - [name]Roman[/name]
[name]Phineas[/name]/[name]Phinehas[/name] - A bit of etymological origami - a Latin translation of a Hebrew name that was itself a translation of an Egyptian name.
I pretty much love every name mentioned thus far. Have added [name]Leonidas[/name] (that’s a new one to me!) to my possibilities list. Some of the other ones we’ve also seriously considered but have decided against for various reasons ([name]Phineas[/name], [name]Lysander[/name], [name]Cyrus[/name] were quite high of the list for quite a while).
Some stellar names there [name]Mischa[/name]!
Particularly fond of [name]Tullius[/name] (though I can’t figure out if it has a meaning), [name]Tiberius[/name], [name]Erasmus[/name], [name]Erastus[/name], Theodosius and [name]Virgil[/name].
There’s a bunch on there that are new to me that I’m gonna need to reflect on a little bit to decide whether or not I like them a ton or not.
[name]Zephyr[/name] is a great name, especially dynamic as a middle name I think.
I like [name]Romulus[/name] and [name]Remus[/name] a lot in concept, but [name]Romulus[/name] sounds too much like the Romulans from [name]Star[/name] Trek to be usable for me, and [name]Remus[/name] sounds like ‘ream’ which has too many negative connotations in US slang. If it wasn’t for those things I’d quite like these names.
My son’s middle name is [name]Zephyr[/name], no regrets what so ever. It’s fantastic.
What about [name]Linus[/name], [name]Aurelius[/name], [name]Aurelian[/name], [name]Cassius[/name], [name]Nero[/name], [name]Seneca[/name], Callias, [name]Hilarion[/name], [name]Eros[/name], [name]Nicodemus[/name]?
[name]Ottilie[/name]- Your got baby name lists down to an artform. Wonderful list, and it got me doing a bunch of research. Some of my favorites from your list include:
[name]Albus[/name], Alpheas, [name]Blasius[/name], [name]Priam[/name], [name]Nereus[/name], Ariston, Caelius, Domitius, Hylas, Kallias (which are all new to me, and I am now gonna do some research on them)
and
[name]Myron[/name], [name]Lysander[/name], Lucianus, [name]Leander[/name], [name]Julius[/name], Dareois, [name]Cornelius[/name], [name]Aurelius[/name] and [name]Augustus[/name] (which have all been considered as possibilities)
Killromance- [name]Aurelius[/name], [name]Aurelian[/name] and [name]Cassius[/name] (as well as [name]Cassian[/name]) are definitely among some of my favorite options of all. Good choice on your son’s MN!
Nook of Names (http://nookofnames.com/) has a section of names inspired by Latin that you might find interesting. The problem is she only got up to the letter E before going on Sabbatical.
sugarplum- some great names in there! Quite a few that are new to me that I’m quite fond of ([name]Aquila[/name], Gallus, [name]Tully[/name], Ariston, Sophus, Straton), especially Gallus (just wish it had a better meaning = rooster) as well as a few that are amongst my favorites ([name]Caius[/name], [name]Gaius[/name], [name]Lucan[/name], [name]Cyrus[/name])
sarah- [name]Pericles[/name] is pretty much an awesome name. Had never considered that one.
Penguin- thanks for introducing me to that site. Think I’ll have to explore it deeper. From the Latin lists the ones that got my attention as particularly nice names were:
Feritas
Elegia
Ensis
Epicus
Caecias
Caecius
Castus
Corvus
Currus
Adamas
Alcedo
Amoenus
Arcus (don’t much like the name [name]Archer[/name], but this one is kind of awesome)
Audax
