I tried posting this on the generic babynames forum but I was long-winded and I think I scared responses off. Short version: My husband loves the name [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] with the nickname [name_f]Andi[/name_f] and I feel like I could really love it too but I’d like to know if you think we’d be jumping the shark. What are your thoughts on it and what are your ideas for great sibling names? Thank you very much for your help!
Personally I think [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is really over the top and a bit too much for a name. I’m not a fan at all. It just doesn’t seem usable, and borders on pretentious, imo.
As for sibling names, I would recommend something equally as [name_m]OTT[/name_m];
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f]
[name_f]Antigone[/name_f]
[name_f]Cassiopeia[/name_f]
[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Narcissa[/name_f]
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f]
[name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]
[name_u]Halcyon[/name_u]
[name_f]Minerva[/name_f]
Thalassa
Majorelle
Isabeau
I think it’s definitely a daring choice, and it’s really hard for me to imagine it on a timid or shy girl–which makes me feel like it isn’t necessarily teenager friendly. At the same time, I can’t really see a 30-y/o woman named [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] in the professional field.
I like [name_f]Andi[/name_f]/[name_f]Andie[/name_f], and I like [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] in theory, but overall it sounds more like a novel character to me.
If you’re open to it, here are a few other suggestions you both might like:
[name_f]Nova[/name_f]
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]/[name_f]Estelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Celine[/name_f]/[name_f]Selene[/name_f]
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f]
[name_f]Twyla[/name_f]
[name_f]Astra[/name_f]
[name_f]Cassia[/name_f] (variation on [name_f]Cassiopeia[/name_f])
[name_u]Seren[/name_u]
[name_f]Helene[/name_f]
[name_f]Soleil[/name_f]
[name_u]Sunny[/name_u]
Curie
And names with “[name_f]Andi[/name_f]” as a possible nickname:
[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Andrine[/name_f]
[name_f]Amandine[/name_f]
[name_f]Andora[/name_f]
[name_f]Calandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Cassandra[/name_f]/Cassandria
[name_f]Iolande[/name_f]
[name_f]Lavender[/name_f]
[name_f]Mandaline[/name_f]
[name_f]Miranda[/name_f]
[name_f]Sunday[/name_f] (although [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] might be a better fit)
Of all these, my favorites would be [name_f]Nova[/name_f], [name_f]Celeste[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], or [name_f]Stella[/name_f] (if he likes it for the space-y-ness). And [name_f]Calandra[/name_f] for the “[name_f]Andi[/name_f]” nickname category.
Good luck and let us know what you end up with!
Thank you for your honesty–I do worry about being over the top. The names you guys suggested are beautiful.
I know it comes from Greek mythology, like a lot of other names that are being more commonly used now like [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], or even [name_f]Athena[/name_f], but to me, it has a definite “Sci-fi” feel too, because of the space connection–and it looks like there’s also a video game called this?
Not to say that means you shouldn’t/couldn’t use it, but using it would be a bold move. For me, personally, it doesn’t pass the “would I want to be named this?” test. But that test is entirely subjective, and I’m sure you’ll find others who would enthusiastically accept the name.
As far a a sibling name, I think you’d have to go bold there, too. Probably also drawing on astronomy or mythology would help to make the names cohesive.
I could see [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] and [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] (space-themed, but still a traditional name)
or
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] paired with another name from Greek mythology
I think [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is a cool name. And [name_f]Andi[/name_f] is cute as well. It’s definitely the kinda name a person would make their own.
I think [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] would be a really great name. If people can use names like [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] and [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], then I don’t see why you couldn’t use [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f], especially since it has nice everyday nicknames like [name_f]Andi[/name_f], [name_f]Annie[/name_f], [name_f]Anna[/name_f], etc. I once had a co-worker named [name_f]Atlantis[/name_f], and I thought her name was so cool. I’d love to meet someone named [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]!
I personally love the name, it’s so new, creative, and unique! If you guys love the name, that’s all that matters.
I will have to say no.
Sure, it can be okay and even sound almost elegant on a baby girl but I honestly doubt it’s a name that would age up well. I seriously hate /my/ name with a passion and even I would not rather have been named [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]
There are plenty of other names that can give you the nickname [name_f]Andie[/name_f] (for example [name_f]Andrianna[/name_f]) to chose from
I’m in the minority here, but I think [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is wonderful.
Names coming from mythology are becoming more common, but [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is still pretty rare, and I think that’s why people think its over the top. Once you get used to it, its no more over the too than [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] or [name_f]Cassiopeia[/name_f].
I think most names from mythology or astronomy would go well as a sibling name. The only ones I wouldn’t recommended are [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f], [name_m]Sirius[/name_m] and Regulus, as they’re all part of one family in [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m].
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] feels enchanting and magical to me. It’s a gorgeous name and I’d love to meet someone named [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]! It is a lot of name, but [name_u]Andy[/name_u]/[name_f]Andie[/name_f] is an easy nickname if she doesn’t like the full name, and chances are other people will think it’s cool too, helped by the fact that it’s unusual enough to have novelty value. The fact that a lot of people won’t have heard it before means that they won’t have prior (negative) associations with it and your daughter will be their primary association.
I would go with another uncommon, dramatic name with mythological/literary/historical associations for a sibling:
[name_u]Artemis[/name_u]
[name_f]Melusine[/name_f]
[name_f]Melisande[/name_f]
Lysandra
[name_f]Lysistrata[/name_f]
[name_f]Cassiopeia[/name_f]
[name_f]Sybilla[/name_f]/[name_f]Sibylla[/name_f]
[name_f]Zenobia[/name_f]
[name_f]Minerva[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f]/[name_f]Iseult[/name_f]
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f]
[name_f]Octavia[/name_f]
[name_f]Theodora[/name_f]
[name_f]Kallista[/name_f]/[name_f]Callista[/name_f]
[name_f]Tempest[/name_f]
[name_f]Thalia[/name_f]
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f]
[name_f]Tatiana[/name_f]
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]
[name_f]Morgana[/name_f]
[name_f]Endellion[/name_f]
[name_f]Delphine[/name_f]
[name_f]Selene[/name_f]
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f]
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
Hespera
[name_f]Cressida[/name_f]
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f]
[name_f]Celestine[/name_f]
[name_f]Ianthe[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucretia[/name_f]
Belphoebe
I like that it can use the nickname [name_u]Andy[/name_u] which makes it more useable, but it’s still quite out there, I wouldn’t dare use it as a name
The first thing that comes to mind when I hear [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is The [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] Strain by [name_u]Michael[/name_u] [name_m]Crichton[/name_m]. [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is the name they give to the alien disease that comes to earth. It is a pretty well known book that was also made into a movie. I would look into the story before naming your kid [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f].
I think it’s useable… If you love it, go for it! I think the NN [name_f]Andi[/name_f] is adorable…
I think it’s awesome. Is it bold? Yes. Is it eccentric? Yes. [name_f]Do[/name_f] I think I would be able to pull [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] off if it were my name? Probably not! If in doubt, you could always use it as a middle name. [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] would be a fabulous and unexpected middle name.
I haven’t seen your longer post, so I’m curious to hear what other names you guys like. [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is a name I would only go for if I was sure of it. It’s a bold and beautiful choice. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t think it’s much more out there than [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] or [name_u]Orion[/name_u] (I know about five little Orions!!)
I think [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is totally wearable!
As to whether it’s jumping the shark, that really depends on what other names you like. If you generally like bold names, then no, I don’t think it’s really much more out there than other fresh-feeling names from literature, mythology, astronomy, or nature. However, if you tend to like more conservative names, except for this one outlier, I’d likely save it for the middle spot or even a pet. I think the name’s wearable, but I think it’s asking for jealousy to name sisters, say, [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f].
If that is your style, go for it. Since I was quite shy growing up I would suggest [name_u]Andrea[/name_u] nn [name_f]Andi[/name_f].
