I’ve been thinking of the name [name]Angel[/name] lately. I think that it has a lot going for it. Especially since it has a lot of meaning to me. It would honor my Spanish heritage through my father (although I would pronounce it the English way) and [name]Angela[/name] is my mother’s middle name. I also love the gentle image I get with it (obviously).
So before I go off to [name]Theo[/name] with the name, I would love to hear what you guys think of the name [name]Angel[/name] for a boy?
I know there will be some people who only see it as a girls name…but it’s pretty widely known to be a Spanish boys name…right??
I adore it, on a boy. Either the Spanish pronunciation or the English one. I’ve known boys who pronounce it the English way (at least some of the time… I think some used the Spanish at home…) and not had any problems/teasing.
I actually think in some ways its stronger than names like [name]Cannon[/name] or [name]Maverick[/name] - they feel like they’re trying a bit too hard.
And its in the US top hundred for boys… that’s WELL within acceptable weirdness for Nameberry usually.
Certainly makes an interesting alternative to [name]Aiden[/name], doesn’t it?
[name]Angel[/name] actually ranks higher for boys than it does for girls, so technically it does lean masculine. As you pointed out, it’s a popular choice in the Hispanic community and I like your reasons for using it.
And, you know, there’s always [name]David[/name] Boreanaz to give [name]Angel[/name] a bit more muscle.
I pretty much only like [name]Angel[/name] for a boy. Possibly because of the aforementioned title character of [name]Angel[/name] the Series and I also like the character of [name]Angel[/name] [name]Batista[/name] on [name]Dexter[/name]. For boys, it makes me think Hispanic. For girls, it feels like they’re trying to be cutesy, like [name]Precious[/name] or [name]Princess[/name].
I like it but imo [name]Angelo[/name] would work better for a boy as I think [name]Angel[/name] would sound good on a baby but it would be weird on a grown up man.
I like this name SO much better for boys than for girls. When I saw your post, I assumed it would be about using it as a girl’s name (I forgot I was in the boys’ names forum!), and I wanted to share my experience – I have a female friend named [name]Angel[/name] and I feel so stupid every time I say her name because it feels so cutesy and silly, like [name]Princess[/name] or something like that and she is so NOT that.
For a boy, I think it is so much more respectable and handsome. I think of [name]Angel[/name] [name]Rodriguez[/name] the baseball player. I do think it only works if you have some Hispanic or Spanish heritage, but you do, so the answer is YES YES YES!!!
I’ve known grown men named [name]Angel[/name] and they wore it well. Not the softest guys, either. I think more of Biblical flaming angels with swords type angels and less about chubby cherub baby angels.
I live in a french/English community and it is a fairly common girl’s name here, but I much prefer it on a boy. I am a huge [name]Buffy[/name] the Vampire Slayer and [name]Angel[/name] fan, so I personally really like [name]Angel[/name]. I think it will forever make me picture [name]David[/name] Boreanaz when I hear it though.
I love [name]Angel[/name] as well–on a boy or girl. I like [name]Angelo[/name] nn [name]Angel[/name] for a boy. I definitely prefer it as a nickname over a proper name. good luck~
I’m from [name]Texas[/name] so I’ve met lots of male Angels but to me it just doesn’t sound right. [name]Even[/name] tho I know biblical angels are not female, to me it just seems like a feminine name. I don’t hate it though. I actually love the word, the concept and the name.
I personally find it to be a bit of an odd image, like naming a kid Cherub (too gooey and pet like) or even [name]Doctor[/name] (high expectation and very direct). Or even weirder, like killing them and making them “angels” but in life. [name]Just[/name] all together weird to me.
I live in Southern [name]California[/name] so I’ve heard it a good bit, on box sexes.
I used to watch [name]Buffy[/name] as well, but to me the name on him was more meant to be a non-subtle irony.
