I have always wanted to honor my grandmother when I named a baby girl because I have such a special relationship with her. The problem is that she hates her name, [name_f]Frances[/name_f] . She has always told me to never use [name_f]Frances[/name_f] for a girl because she hates it and thinks it’s horrible(sorry to anyone that likes the name, those are just the words she always used). So now I’m trying to figure out a way to still honor her but not upset her by using [name_f]Frances[/name_f], which is a name I honestly wouldn’t ever use either.
If you wanted to just use the F from [name_f]Frances[/name_f], consider:
[name_f]Fern[/name_f]
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f]
[name_f]Flora[/name_f]
[name_f]Fleur[/name_f]
[name_f]Fay[/name_f]
How about the name [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]? It has the same meaning as [name_f]Frances[/name_f] which means “free one”. For a move obvious honor [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] means the same thing! [name_u]Cezanne[/name_u], [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], and [name_f]Carli[/name_f] also mean “free”
Like others said maybe look at some other names starting with the letter F! What about her favorite flower? If she loved Lillies, Roses, Violets, etc. you could have an honor name right there! Or maybe a name that has a meaning you connect to your grandma! Names like [name_f]Kara[/name_f] mean loved which could be what you felt when you were with her!
Fancy
[name_u]Fritzi[/name_u]
Cesca
I would also ask your grandmother what name she always thought was the loveliest and maybe name the baby that. Because that’s also a dedication in a way.
Totally love the fabulous [name_u]Frankie[/name_u]!
Francesca is also a gorgeous name, and could be Cesca/Cheska for short if it’s the “[name_u]Fran[/name_u]” part she hates. I knew a girl at school who went by Cheska and it always struck me as a really cool, confident, feisty sort of name.
For me the ultimate honour name for a [name_f]Frances[/name_f] would be [name_f]Francesca[/name_f].
Francesca is beautiful it’s a gorgeous choice features [name_f]Frances[/name_f] within the name itself and comes with a range of great nicknames. I hardly see [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] being used it’s great choice!
Francesca/Frankie was my first thought - LOVE @katinka’s suggestion of [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] “Cheska”, one of my favourite nicknames!!
I also like the idea of asking your grandmother what names she likes so she has a bit of a hand in choosing it, and it would be a sweet connection for her and baby still!! I’ve thought about doing this with my grandmother when the time comes
My grandmother is the same with her name, it makes it tricky!
How do you think she’d feel/how do you feel about a variant of [name_f]Frances[/name_f], like [name_f]Francine[/name_f] or [name_f]Francesca[/name_f]? I liked the suggestions of [name_u]Frankie[/name_u] by a few other berries. Otherwise you could use a name from [name_f]France[/name_f] (a [name_u]French[/name_u] style name) that you both like?
Does she dislike [name_f]Frances[/name_f] as a girls name specifically? If so, you could consider honouring her if you had a boy with [name_u]Francis[/name_u] as a first or middle name.
Alternatively, you could focus on the ‘F’ and choose a name with that initial - [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], [name_u]Fallon[/name_u] etc - or on the ‘an’ sound - [name_u]Anne[/name_u], [name_f]Anna[/name_f], [name_f]Marianna[/name_f] era.
Frances is her middle name. Her first name is [name_f]Mary[/name_f], but my name is also [name_f]Mary[/name_f] (mine is spelled [name_f]Mari[/name_f]) so we aren’t planning on using that since it’s my name.
