Anouk traditionally a boys name?

I posted on facebook that had we been expecting a girl we wanted to use the name [name]Anouk[/name].

Several people posted saying that [name]Anouk[/name] is traditionally a boys name. I have never heard this and google didn’t help me.

Is [name]Anouk[/name] traditionally a boys name? I don’t think I would use it regardless but I am really interested and hope some of you name lovers would know!

What?! I have never, ever, ever in my life heard that. I’ve always heard that it was a French variant of [name]Anne[/name]/[name]Anna[/name]. [name]Every[/name] reputable name site I trust–I’ve checked!–lists that it’s a French/Dutch variant of [name]Anna[/name], popular in French-speaking countries.

So weird, lol. I would love to meet a little girl named [name]Anouk[/name]!

[name]Anouk[/name] is a Dutch and French form of [name]Anna[/name], so… no.

It’s the French and Dutch diminutive of [name]Anna[/name], nothing male about it at all!

I’ve heard this name somewhere, but I can’t place it. I know it was on a girl, though. So this definitely feels feminine to me. Although I see that NB says it’s the French and Dutch version of [name]Anna[/name], but for some reason I thought it was Inuit and meant something else. I have no idea where that “knowledge” is coming from though, so maybe I just made it up at some point and have started believing it. You never know.

Either way, it’s still a girl’s name. Not sure why folks think it’s a boy’s name. Maybe they’re getting it confused with something similar?

I went to school with a girl called [name]Anoushka[/name] who quite often went by [name]Anouk[/name]. So it’s all girl for me.

I did see a few people suggest using it anyway/that it was a traditionally male name on your FB post, which also prompted me to google “[name]Anouk[/name] boys name”! Like you, I had no joy – for obvious reasons!

Have your kids come up with any good suggestions? My cousin’s 4 year old wanted her parents to name her baby sister [name]Hank[/name]!

Maybe this is why you thought it was an Inuit name? Anouk: Name Meaning, Popularity and Info on BabyNames.com

I am glad you did the same because I was honestly really confused and the girl who said it first didn’t reply to me when I asked where it was traditionally used for boys! Ahhh, I am glad that you found the same as me or I’d be up all night wondering what I was missing.

[name]Anouk[/name] is ALL-GIRL. Why don’t you ask whoever gave you the erroneous idea that it was a boys name where on earth they got that information?

All girl to me too.

makes me think of the singer who is definitely a girl.

I did but they did not reply!

Ha ha – I wish I were that thorough. I’m embarrassed to say that most of the time when I respond I don’t even look up names on NB. I mostly go by my first instincts. I don’t know a lot about names like most folks on here; I’m more interested in the sound of the name and personal meaning (as I am when I name my own kids). But I was dancing around something … I didn’t want it to sound … non-PC? I can’t think of the right word. My memory of the name is of a small eskimo girl in an animated movie, but I can’t remember if it’s a real movie or if I’m imagining it. I did google the name with “animated movie” but couldn’t find anything. And I was worried it would sound ignorant, at best, if I said I thought it was an eskimo name, so I tried to be a bit more PC about it. It is driving me crazy, though, that I can’t place this movie. Maybe someone else knows what I’m talking about …

Unless there is some hidden colony of male [name]Anna[/name]'s somewhere in [name]France[/name], no.

Nooooo ! [name]Anouk[/name] is only girl !
It isn’t really popular in [name]France[/name] but everyone knows this name.
