I posted before looking for names to honor [name]Monique[/name], [name]Christine[/name], [name]Alice[/name], and [name]Rose[/name] and got some great ideas but nothing really stuck with the hubby and I wasn’t in love with them enough to really put up a fight. The names [name]Anthea[/name] and [name]Althea[/name] have been on our list for a while and they can honor my husband’s side of the family but one more than the other. I also really want to use the name [name]Rose[/name], it was my grandmother’s name and my MN, but I don’t want to not honor [name]Matt[/name]'s side at all. All of our kids will follow the tradition that my family has of the second MN of [name]Joseph[/name] or [name]Marie[/name] accordingly and his side gets looked over and I really want to avoid that.
At first I thought having an Irish MN would work but I can’t seem to find anything that isn’t too harsh for me. I’m still holding onto [name]Alice[/name] [name]Rose[/name] ([name]Alice[/name] is my [name]MIL[/name] MN) and my mother ([name]Monique[/name] [name]Christine[/name]) said if I use [name]Rose[/name] then she’ll be covered. The only problem is [name]Matt[/name] doesn’t want to use the exact name so I’m left with trying to find something to honor [name]Alice[/name] that can stand on it’s own and isn’t a filler name, i.e. [name]Elise[/name] ([name]Love[/name] this name but is it strong enough to be on it’s own?)
With all that said I’ve turned back to [name]Anthea[/name] and [name]Althea[/name]. They both have [name]Thea[/name] in it which has the same meaning as my husband’s name [name]Matthew[/name], I realize it’s a stretch but this is as close to [name]Thea[/name] as he will let me get because he thinks it sounds like someone with a lisp saying See-ya. [name]Althea[/name] has the [name]AL[/name] like in [name]Alice[/name] and she has the option of going by [name]Ali[/name] if she wants even though I hate that NN. [name]Anthea[/name] starts with an A but that’s the end of the similarities. I was thinking of using the Irish cognate of [name]Rose[/name] if we pick [name]Anthea[/name] but I’m not sure how it is pronounced or [name]Elise[/name] and for [name]Althea[/name] I was thinking a French version of [name]Rose[/name] for the middle, i.e. [name]Roselle[/name].
So what do you think based on my reasoning?
[name]Anthea[/name] or [name]Althea[/name]?
[name]Anthea[/name] [name]Elise[/name] [name]Marie[/name] or [name]Anthea[/name] [name]Rois[/name] [name]Marie[/name]?
[name]Althea[/name] [name]Rose[/name] [name]Marie[/name] or [name]Althea[/name] [name]Roselle[/name] [name]Marie[/name]?
Is [name]Elise[/name] strong enough to be a FN? If so, what version of [name]Rose[/name] would work with it?
ETA: I love the NN possibilities for [name]Anthea[/name], especially [name]Annie[/name].
Can I get away with [name]Anthea[/name]-[name]Rose[/name] [name]Clarice[/name] [name]Marie[/name] or is that cruel and unusual punishment?
I love [name]Althea[/name] [name]Rose[/name] [name]Marie[/name]! [name]Althea[/name] freshens [name]Rose[/name] (which is kind of tired [name]IMO[/name]) and [name]Rose[/name] [name]Marie[/name] is a common combo the grounds [name]Althea[/name]. I like it.
I’ve never heard of [name]Anthea[/name] and don’t care for it but I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Althea[/name]. It’s older and very elegant and has several fun, kicky NNs ([name]Ali[/name]! [name]Thea[/name]! Thee! Thebes! OMG THEBES!)
[name]Althea[/name] [name]Rose[/name] [name]Marie[/name] is really nice.
[name]Elise[/name] is also definitely strong enough to stand on it’s own.
[name]Elise[/name] [name]Rosalie[/name] is nice.
I think [name]Althea[/name] rolls off the tongue better than [name]Anthea[/name]. The middle names all are so similar that I really don’t have a preference. Go with your favorite there.
Im going to be a minority here and say how much i [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Anthea[/name]. I think it is a stunning, extremely friendly on a child, and super ladylike as a woman. Plus, the nn [name]Annie[/name] wins this one for me! If you went with [name]Anthea[/name] [name]Rose[/name] [name]Marie[/name] or [name]Anthea[/name] [name]Rose[/name] [name]Elise[/name], she could even be [name]Annie[/name] [name]Rose[/name] which is super sweet if you’re into the double nickname.
Side note, if you went with [name]Anthea[/name] [name]Elise[/name] [name]Marie[/name], you would get your side in with the [name]Marie[/name], and his side in with [name]Elise[/name] honoring [name]Alice[/name], plus the [name]Thea[/name] honoring your hubby. I actually like this better then [name]Anthea[/name] [name]Rose[/name] [name]Marie[/name] since to me, “[name]Rose[/name] [name]Marie[/name]” sounds like it should be one name, so [name]Rosemarie[/name]/[name]Rosemary[/name]. Of course, you could always do [name]Anthea[/name] [name]Rosemarie[/name] [name]Elise[/name]/[name]Anthea[/name] [name]Elise[/name] [name]Rosemarie[/name] and get everything you wanted in there!
Is [name]Elise[/name] strong enough to be a fn? Absolutely! I know a 6 year old [name]Elise[/name] and it works perfectly. Of course, she goes by the ever so popular [name]Ellie[/name], which would be inevitable for your little [name]Elise[/name]. Something to consider popularity wise! If you were to go with [name]Elise[/name] as a first name, i would stick with [name]Rose[/name] as the middle name, as [name]Elise[/name] [name]Roselle[/name] was too much “[name]El[/name]” in it!
[name]Anthea[/name] [name]Rosemarie[/name] [name]Elise[/name]/[name]Anthea[/name] [name]Elise[/name] [name]Rosemarie[/name] all the way!
[name]Hope[/name] this helps!
I much prefer [name]Althea[/name], which I absolutely love. [name]Anthea[/name] certainly has its place, but I don’t like how hard it sounds at the start, and that it spells ‘ant’
@ [name]Venessa[/name] - Thank you. I’m hoping she’ll like [name]Thea[/name] more than [name]Ali[/name] just because I’m not a fan of [name]Ali[/name]. I like [name]Elise[/name] [name]Rosalie[/name] but the second middle is [name]Marie[/name] and I think it might be too rhymey
@[name]Rachel[/name] - Thank you
@Asophie - I [name]LOVE[/name] the NN [name]Annie[/name] and [name]Annie[/name] [name]Rose[/name] is beyond adorable. Unfortunately [name]Marie[/name] is family tradition as the second middle so that can’t change. If I used [name]Elise[/name] I would probably put it as a middle and name her [name]Rose[/name] [name]Elise[/name] [name]Marie[/name] which I am loving.
Could I get away with [name]Anthea[/name]-[name]Rose[/name] [name]Clarice[/name]/[name]Elise[/name] [name]Marie[/name] or is that way too much to saddle on a little girl?
I really like both [name]Anthea[/name] and [name]Althea[/name]; I think they’re lovely, underused classics! I’d personally go with [name]Anthea[/name]-- it has a nice meaning, and I like the nickname [name]Annie[/name] a lot better than [name]Ali[/name]. But you can’t go wrong with either one!
For names to honor [name]Alice[/name]: you could use a different spelling of [name]Alice[/name], like [name]Alys[/name] (Medieval variant, I believe). You could also do [name]Alix[/name], which is a medieval French variant. [name]Anthea[/name] [name]Alix[/name] [name]Rose[/name]? And this may be too much of a stretch, but [name]Alice[/name] is derived from the [name]German[/name] Adalheidis, which sprouted [name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Adeline[/name], [name]Adele[/name], and [name]Adela[/name]. So you could do something like [name]Anthea[/name] [name]Rose[/name] [name]Adele[/name].
The Irish cognate of [name]Rose[/name] is [name]Roisin[/name], which is pronounced like ‘ro-sheen’. I think it’s pretty, and I really like [name]Althea[/name]/[name]Anthea[/name] [name]Roisin[/name]. Other [name]Rose[/name] names are [name]Rosemary[/name], [name]Rosalie[/name], [name]Rosalind[/name], [name]Rosamund[/name], [name]Rosalia[/name], [name]Rosa[/name], or [name]Rosaline[/name]… any of those work?
[name]Elise[/name] definitely works as a first name, but it’s not nearly as distinctive as [name]Anthea[/name] or [name]Althea[/name]. I mean, it’s pretty, but a teeny bit dated and just not very interesting (to me, at least). Also I hear hyphenated names are a nightmare to deal with (on forms and such) so I’d advise not to go the [name]Anthea[/name]-[name]Rose[/name] route. Plus it sort of takes out all the sophistication of both names, I think.
I looooove [name]Althea[/name]. I think [name]Althea[/name] [name]Rose[/name] is pretty, but [name]Althea[/name] [name]Rose[/name] [name]Marie[/name] just makes me think that it’s possibly the best first name ever… combined with two very blah middles. I know you’re honoring people, though. What about [name]Althea[/name] [name]Rosemary[/name]? I find it rolls off my tongue a little better…
[name]Anthea[/name] is also gorgeous, so I don’t really think you can go wrong. But if I had to pick, I’d go with [name]Althea[/name]. GL!
I have never met anyone with the name [name]Anthea[/name] or [name]Althea[/name].
But, I like both.
[name]Althea[/name] was the name of a famous tennis player, also it is a well performed Grateful Dead song.
I read online once where someone named [name]Anthea[/name] was often called by the nick-name Anteater - she didn’t seem to mind much as an adult.
[name]Both[/name] names I would consider usable, with the slight edge to [name]Althea[/name]. [name]IMO[/name]
@IrisRose -
I have to agree the NN [name]Annie[/name] is much better than [name]Ali[/name]. I never thought of looking at the meaning of the name to narrow it down.
I love [name]Alix[/name] but it would have to be [name]Alix[/name] [name]Marie[/name]. [name]Marie[/name] is a family tradition so it has to stay. I love [name]Adeline[/name], [name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Adele[/name], and [name]Adela[/name]. They are actually all on my name list but I didn’t even think of using them because I didn’t know they had a connnection to [name]Alice[/name].
I have [name]Rosalie[/name] on our list but I’m worried it’s too rhymey with [name]Marie[/name] as the second middle and I have found a middle to go with it. The other ones are too harsh for sounding for me.
So I guess [name]Anthea[/name]-[name]Rose[/name] [name]Clarice[/name] is out? LOL I’ll have to ask my friend [name]Mary[/name]. Her name is hyphenated and see if she had any problems.

I like [name]Rosemary[/name] and [name]Mary[/name] is [name]MIL[/name] first name but [name]Rosemary[/name] [name]Marie[/name] is a little much for me. Thank you for responding.
I vote for [name]Althea[/name]. Something about [name]Anthea[/name] doesn’t work for me and I am personally not a fan. Really, whatever NN you choose to call your child is usually the one they go by in school, especially if you call your child by that NN from the time they are very young. So, if you prefer [name]Thea[/name] to [name]Ali[/name], I would think that it wouldn’t be a problem. [name]Elise[/name] is a nice name but to me it doesn’t have the same POP! that [name]Althea[/name] has.
[name]Althea[/name] [name]Rose[/name] [name]Marie[/name]
[name]Althea[/name] [name]Alix[/name] [name]Marie[/name]-normally I don’t like alliteration, but I like this
[name]Althea[/name] [name]Alice[/name] [name]Marie[/name]-see above
[name]Althea[/name] [name]Adelaide[/name] [name]Marie[/name]-kinda long,but I like the variation
[name]Rosalie[/name] [name]Alison[/name] [name]Marie[/name]-I think you wouldn’t have to worry about [name]Marie[/name] being to rhymey with [name]Rosalie[/name] because it is in the second middle name spot. I used [name]Alison[/name] as a variant to [name]Alice[/name] to “show” you so to speak. But that’s coming from someone who’s only middle name and the last part of my last name are EXACTLY the same name just a spelling variation.
[name]Rosalie[/name] and [name]Althea[/name] give two very different perceptions, to me [name]Rosalie[/name] is girly girl and [name]Althea[/name] is slightly tomboyish, maybe athletic.
[name]Hope[/name] I helped some. Good [name]Luck[/name]!
