Antonia pronunciation?

I’ve always pronounced [name_f]Antonia[/name_f] as An-TONE-ee-a, but now we’re reading [name_f]My[/name_f] [name_f]Antonia[/name_f] in class and everyone says An-ton-EE-a, no emphasis on the O. What is the correct way (for an English speaker) to pronounce [name_f]Antonia[/name_f], or how do you say it?

I live in [name_f]Canada[/name_f], and I don’t know anyone named [name_f]Antonia[/name_f], but in my head I say it an-TONE-ya. So like you, but with “ya” instead of “ee-a” at the end. I don’t know if this is the correct way or if there is a single correct way.

The only person I’ve ever known called [name_f]Antonia[/name_f] pronounced it An-TOH-nee-uh, but when saying it fast it always came out more like An-TOH-nya (I always dislike the sound of -ya at the end of names instead of -ee-uh  )

In the UK it’s an-TOHN-ee-ə/an-TOHN-yə. I’ve never heard anything else in English, though I do know that in Greek it is pronounced with the stress on the penultimate syllable.

[name_f]Antonia[/name_f] an-TONE-ee-ah
There isn’t a correct English way to say it, in a sense, because it isn’t an English name (it’s Latin). So the rules that apply should be the rules of a Latin name. It’s rather bizarre that your class is emphasizing the EE sound. I just checked behindthename and in six languages - including English - the TONE sound is emphasized. They are just saying it wrong.

I think an-TONE-ee-uh is the way most people pronounce the name. However, in the novel ”ntonia is from “[name_f]Bohemia[/name_f]” which is where the anton-EE-uh pronunciation is coming from. The accent mark over the A probably affects the pronunciation as well, but I truthfully don’t know much about that.

I know an [name_f]Antonia[/name_f], who says her name [name_f]Ann[/name_f]-TOE-nee-uh, which is how I’ve always said it. I think it’s pretty much your [name_f]Ann[/name_f]-TONE-ee-uh pronunciation.

An-Tone-ee-ah

I say it like an-TOH-nee-ya, pretty much an-TONE-e-ya (I also say -ee-ah too, but -e-ya comes more naturally).

I say An-TO-nee-a. Granted; I’m not from the US but [name_f]Antonia[/name_f] is quite popular here and everyone just put the emphasis on the O!

In real life, all the Antonias I’ve known have pronounced it ann-tone-ee-uh but I’ve always heard [name_f]My[/name_f] [name_f]Antonia[/name_f] pronounced with as ann-toe-nee-uh. This is one reason I’ve never been able to move the name higher up on my list. I prefer the [name_f]My[/name_f] [name_f]Antonia[/name_f] pronunciation but know that the vast majority of people would pronounce it ann-tone-ee-uh, which I don’t really care for.

I would say it as An-TONE-ee-uh

This was the case for the [name_f]Antonia[/name_f] I knew too. I’m in [name_f]Canada[/name_f].

An-TONE-ee-a

I say ann-TOE-nee-ah.
