I love [name]Anwen[/name]. I think it is simple, beautiful - but at the same time unusual and very underused (at least in the states). In [name]America[/name], at least, I don’t think it even matters to have a cultural tie to a name, we’re such a melting pot of everything that you just know whose connected to what anymore.
Yeah, I should have mentioned that I’m in the States! Thank you for your thoughts.
Yes, I should mention that I am in the US! Anyone else? Not getting much feedback so I’m curious as to why? Is the name too plain?
No, it’s not too plain. I don’t care for it, honestly, but it isn’t a bad name.
I would use it… if I didn’t live in an area of the U.S with a nasally accent. Ayyyynwen. This place ruins all the A names for me, I tell ya:)
I don’t see any problem with using it if you’re not Welsh. They have the best names!
[name]Love[/name] [name]Anwen[/name]. It is very elegant, but would also be very cute on a little girl. Reminds me of [name]Elowen[/name], [name]Gwendolen[/name], [name]Arwen[/name] and [name]Wren[/name] (all of which I also love).
lovely! though for a second it makes me think of amway. love elowen, wren, arwen and bronwen
[name]Love[/name]! It reminds me of Anawim, a word I stumbled across actually in church which the priest used to describe ‘the blessed poor’ and was evaluating Anawim. I like that it has the ‘[name]Ann[/name]’ in it and the ‘Wen’ is also often used, which makes it very wearable.
I must admit I tend to roll my eyes a bit at all these Irish/Welsh/Scottish revival names, only because they all follow a similar pattern and sound the same, blending together in my head. They also strike me as a little pretentious. Objectively, [name]Anwen[/name] is very pretty, though it does remind me a bit of the types of names I make up for my characters when playing Dungeons and Dragons. On a little girl it seems a bit much. Buuuuut, full disclosure, I roll my name when I hear [name]Rowan[/name], [name]Bronwen[/name], [name]Declan[/name], [name]Bevan[/name], etc etc. The good thing about names is that once the child is born, all of this is moot, and kids having a way into growing into whatever you call them. If you like it, then go for it. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the name!
Really think it is sweet. I love [name]Arwen[/name] too.
Interesting cosmonaut. I’ve never heard anyone say they thought it was pretentious. I think people like to trace their roots and a lot of people have ancestry in those countries. I’m Scottish and Irish, though not Welsh so in this case I wonder if it’s silly. I think the name is pretty but I 1) don’t have the ancestry, 2) love far too many An- names for my own good, and 3) often end up with people misreading it as [name]Arwen[/name] and I don’t really want people thinking I named my daughter after a fandom. Personal preference.
Thank for all the interesting and varied feedback everyone! Learned several things from this thread already!
I love [name]Anwen[/name]. It’s sweet and has the same feel as [name]Gwen[/name].
