I realize that [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] and [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] sound too much alike. One of them have to go if I want to use them in 10+ years.
Maybe my taste will change by that time, though lol.
Have you had to eliminate any names because of rhyming, meaning, etc?
My daughter’s name is Utopia, and my son’s name is [name_m]Tiberius[/name_m]. They’re 10 & 5 1/2. I’m compiling name lists for #3 and started saying the names I like with theirs… I’ve had to downgrade Aetheria to middle name only (probably) because it rhymes too much with the other two! Tho I do still love it. Erytheia isn’t as direct a rhyme and I love it, but for some reason I think I like Aetheria more… also no matter how much I like the name, I can’t bring myself to put any boys names on the list ending in -ius or -eus because it’s too rhyme-y with [name_m]Tiberius[/name_m].
When I had twins I was sure I would name my girl [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], but when we saw her it just did not fit with her or her brother’s name. I am glad I went with my gut.
One of my all time favorites is Huckston (nn [name_m]Huck[/name_m]). But I also love [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] for a boy. Bout I’ve had to give up on [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] because of the rhyming factor. [name_m]Huck[/name_m] and [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] would not make a great sib set.
When I was pregnant of my first daughter I wanted to call her [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f].
But when she was born she didn’t look like a [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and I had the feeling she was more a tomboy…
So we had to come up with a diffrant name…
When my Husband came back from the toilet he said: We are gonna call her [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u] [name_m]Clark[/name_m]! I looked at my little baby and the name matched.
A view weeks later we had to go back to the hospital for a check up. And I had too use the toilet and there it was! The name on the toilet paper holder: [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u] [name_m]Clark[/name_m]!
So, we went back too the office and change her name back to [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]!
My husband is a fan of many [name_f]El[/name_f]- names for girls ([name_f]Eloise[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f]) but our daughter is [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], so they are too close for my liking. We also can’t really use [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] as our daughters main nickname is [name_f]Lulu[/name_f], and that’s another one of my husband’s faves.
Luckily we can still use most of my favourites!
We can’t use any long names that start with E because our last name is 4 syllables and starts with E. So many pretty names are out, like [name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f], [name_f]Eliana[/name_f], [name_f]Esperanza[/name_f], [name_f]Emiliana[/name_f], etc.
At the moment I’m trying to decide between [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Cerelia[/name_f] ([name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]'s winning). I also had to give up on several names that had pronunciations I didn’t like ([name_f]Alcyone[/name_f], [name_f]Felicia[/name_f], [name_f]Elysia[/name_f]). I also have about 3 [name_f]Luna[/name_f] names on my list, and I just font have the heart to remove any of them. In order of preference they are: [name_f]Luna[/name_f]-[name_f]Fae[/name_f], [name_f]Lunette[/name_f], and Calluna, but if I had to [name_f]Luna[/name_f]-[name_f]Fae[/name_f] would be the name staying.
I really love [name_f]Alice[/name_f], but my SO vetoed it because it sounds too similar to his name.
We also recently agreed that, while my all-time favourite boy name [name_u]EVER[/name_u] is [name_m]Edmund[/name_m], my name is [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and it’s a bit too Narnian. I couldn’t care less, but my SO doesn’t love [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] anyway sigh
I’ve also had an internal debate between [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Iris[/name_f], because they sound so alike. Same goes for figuring out if I like [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] or [name_m]Julian[/name_m] more. And [name_m]Julian[/name_m] vs [name_m]Adrian[/name_m].
I like [name_m]Cassian[/name_m] for a boy or [name_f]Cassia[/name_f] for a girl - my partner has a niece called [name_u]Cassidy[/name_u], so I couldn’t use either :-/ Plus my name and my partner’s name both start with C, so I’d really, really have to like a C name to use it for a child too.
My children have or will have double barreled surnames, and if I have a girl then her middle name will be 3 syllables, so any long first names are out.
I like [name_m]Otis[/name_m], but I think [name_m]Zeke[/name_m] and [name_m]Otis[/name_m] are too… hmmm… Hillbilly (sorry) together.
I love both [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] and [name_f]Romilly[/name_f], but with the double ‘ll’ and -y ending I don’t think I could use both.
My favourite boys’ name is [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] which rules out a lot of beautiful [name_f]El[/name_f]- girls names like [name_f]Elodie[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]…
I am just getting into the painful process of allowing bf to veto names on my list, and I had to eliminate some of my favourites (Svala and Rósa) because he just doesn’t like them. It was a firm position, so I won’t be trying to persuade him to change his mind, even though I want to, because I respect his opinion and I know I wouldn’t change my own mind about a name I disliked. So yep, they’re eliminated
Whatever we choose for this child will also inevitably rule out a lot of names for a potential second child, since I don’t want them to be completely dissimilar stylistically, or conversely too close.
I go back and forth between [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] and [name_f]Ramona[/name_f], which are obviously too similar to both be used. [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] I have loved for longer, but [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] works better with my other favourites, which are predominantly vintage. I figure until I have to actually name a kid, they can both stay on my list, as I love them equally! x
OH has vetoed all of my “soft” boy’s names a la [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] and [name_m]Ronan[/name_m]. My other loves such as [name_u]Spencer[/name_u], [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] have been kicked out because our last name ends in -er. [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] [name_m]Becker[/name_m], [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] [name_m]Becker[/name_m] and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] [name_m]Becker[/name_m] just don’t sound right.
Having [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] has eliminated some other [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] names like [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. And I love [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] but thats too narnia with an [name_m]Edmund[/name_m]. Also eliminating any E names in the future because I would like all my children to have their own initial. Thankfully I only like one name [name_f]Eloise[/name_f].
I love [name_f]Marceline[/name_f] but it rhymes with my last name! It’s a real tragedy for me. I also like [name_f]Lily[/name_f], but it is way too popular.
I had to eliminate two of my favorites, [name_u]Casey[/name_u] and [name_m]Caleb[/name_m]. My husband was just not on board with them. Poor associations on his end have ruined a lot of good names. I think many of us have that problem. He’s also not big on [name_m]Zachary[/name_m] or [name_m]Nolan[/name_m], but I will try to bring him around.
I’ve had to push down the list [name_f]Rose[/name_f]/[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], [name_f]Annemarie[/name_f], [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] because of my husband’s preferences but they’re still on the list. I’ve had to forever eliminate [name_f]Claire[/name_f], [name_f]Tessa[/name_f]/[name_f]Tess[/name_f], [name_f]Bedelia[/name_f], [name_f]Colleen[/name_f] and [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] for the same reasons.
I’m having this exact problem and it’s killing me! Two of my favourite names in the world are [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] and [name_f]Margo[/name_f] and I can’t use both I haven’t decided which to take off yet as I love them both equally.
I’ve had to eliminate [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] because my sister-in-law’s name is [name_f]Rheanna[/name_f]—her parents named her after the song [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f].
So, that’s off the list too.
