I am aware of two main connotations that people have with [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], which are the character from The Chronicles of [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] and the show I [name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. But are either of these negative for you, and are there any others that would keep you from using [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]?
I like the name [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]! I think it’s really cute and I don’t mind the connections that you mentioned. The only negative connotation that I can think of would be the Beatles’ song “[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] in the [name_u]Sky[/name_u] with Diamonds”, which is referring to the drug LSD. Also, it’s a pretty common dog name. Other than those things, though, I love the name!
I thought of [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] from [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] [name_m]Brown[/name_m], who isn’t nice.
I haven’t thought of any of those connotations particularly. To me, once there are many characters and references to a particular name, it kind of removes a immediate association with the name. Does that make sense? I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] the name [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and it’s very high on the list for future daughters of mine. I love it paired as a sister name with [name_u]Ruby[/name_u].
I agree with PP - there are so many different associations with the name [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], that they’re kind of cancelled out. Virtually all of the ones I can think of are positive, with the exception of The Beatles song.
I think it’s adorable, and very wearable!
It’s a classic name. Nothing negative comes to mind.
I can’t really think of any negative connotations for [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], besides the one previously pointed out.
This is a good friend’s name and the only one that bothered her is that the nickname for [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] - “[name_u]Luce[/name_u]” - sounds the same as “loose” which she was teased about as a teenager. She loves the name overall though - hope this helps!
Many people may not know this, but [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is actually the feminine form of [name_m]Lucius[/name_m], which is a form of [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m]. So basically, [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is a shortening/feminine version of [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m]. I wouldn’t use [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] for that exact reason. I feel naming your daughter [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is almost the same as naming your son [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m].
Ugh, I loathe this name. I don’t see the appeal; it feels so immature. Plus I hate calling a child ‘loosey’. It’s like naming your precious daughter Harlot. My strongest association is ‘loosey goosey’, which means promiscuous with no standards. On an episode of [name_u]Golden[/name_u] Girls, when they performed the play [name_f]Henny[/name_f] [name_u]Penny[/name_u], of course [name_f]Blanche[/name_f] was Goosey Loosey.
Her peers may not know ‘loosey goosey’ but they’ll definitely know what ‘loose’ means.
I went to school with two Lucys and there was no slut-shaming involved It’s a common enough name that any negative connotations soon get neutralised by positive ones.
I adore the name [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]!
The only thing I can think of is it rhymes with goosey so she could be called [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] Goosey. That is minor though.
I can’t think of any.
Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I was not aware of the “loosey” connotation at all, so that’s good to know. If I have a daughter [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] someday, I plan to raise her in a [name_m]Christian[/name_m] environment, so perhaps that reference wouldn’t be known as much, who knows.
The [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m] connotation doesn’t bother me because the two names are not biblically linked in any way, only by word meaning.
The [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m] thing is interesting. I had never thought of it before but it’s pretty obvious, now. But I wouldn’t avoid it for that reason… or you will be avoiding everything with “light” in the meaning.
I agree with most of the others… it’s not 100% tease-proof but I don’t think there is one connection that stands above the rest.
I get called “[name_f]Lu[/name_f]”, not [name_u]Luce[/name_u], so I’ve never had an issue with the “loose” thing… though I guess a “loo” is a toilet in [name_f]England[/name_f], but I’ve literally spent about 3 days in [name_f]England[/name_f], and really only get called [name_f]Lu[/name_f] by certain close friends.
There is a [name_m]Hanson[/name_m] song called [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], which is definitely not the greatest song ever, but I admit that one of my friends started calling me [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] because of that song when we were 10, and that’s how I came to have this name (chose the formal name of [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] a decade later).
I guess there are people who are like, “Hey, my/ my mom’s/ my neighbour’s dog/cat is named [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]” but that’s also not bothersome to me. Like [name_f]Emily[/name_f] mentioned upthread, there are many Lucys to look to, and with all these options, none really stick out.
