Anyone Else Notice Name Trends in Their Year Group?

I’ve been randomly thinking about the names in my high school year group (I graduted 2 years ago) and realised there were some pretty interesting patterns.

We had 108 girls, all born around 2006/2007, located in [name_f]Sydney[/name_f], [name_m]Australia[/name_m].
Some of the most common names were:
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] - 4
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] - 3 (although one pronounced it with an long ‘a’ sound (like ar/uh) while the other two used a short ‘a’ sound)
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f] - 4
[name_f]Lily[/name_f] - 2 (+ 1 Lily-Blossom)
[name_f]Jenny[/name_f] - 2
[name_f]Eva[/name_f] - 2 (+ 1 [name_f]Ava[/name_f])
Abigail/Abigaile - 2
[name_f]Keira[/name_f] - 2
[name_f]Chloe[/name_f] - 2
[name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] - 2
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - 2 (+ 1 [name_f]Charlize[/name_f])

But then there were also SO many names where there was only one person:

I find it especially interesting looking at the names that were almost the same too: Amelia/Amelie, Eva/Ava, Elle/Ella, Kaea/Kaiya, Ella/Elle, Charlotte/Charlize

Interesting as well there were 3 people with hyphenated named (something rather uncommon in [name_m]Australia[/name_m] from my perspective)

Did anyone else ever look at their year group’s names and notice weird trends like this?

What were the most common names in your year? And were there any particularly unusual/distinctive names that you remember having in your cohort?

I’m also curious whether people born around 2006/07 in different schools had similar name patterns or if anyone knows how the more common ones were ranked those years?

My year group in high school, in a group of 250, had many variations of the [name_f]Kate[/name_f] family: one just [name_f]Kate[/name_f], one just [name_f]Cate[/name_f], three Kaitlyn/Caitlyn/Caitlins, three Kathryn/Katherines, and a [name_f]Katrina[/name_f].

My first year of college, a group around 500, had seven Emmas and seven [name_m]Jacks[/name_m]!

[name_f]Emily[/name_f] was by far the most popular girls’ name in my high school class (I graduated 5 years ago, in the US). We also had a ton of girls with two-syllable C or K names like [name_f]Kylie[/name_f], [name_f]Kayla[/name_f], [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], [name_m]Casey[/name_m], etc, to the point that one of my out-of-school friends joked she couldn’t keep track of who was who :sweat_smile:

Probably the most interesting thing was the lack of some super popular names - we had a bunch of Emilys, but not a single [name_f]Madison[/name_f], [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], [name_f]Alexis[/name_f], [name_f]Ashley[/name_f], etc in my year - all of which were top 10 names when I was born! There were a few of them in the year ahead/behind, but I don’t remember a single [name_f]Madison[/name_f] at our school, which is statistically wild! Part of it was probably the demographics of where I grew up - I knew a lot of people with non-English names that didn’t rank in the US but were quite popular locally (I went to school with multiple girls named [name_f]Sahana[/name_f], for example)

This is super interesting – especially all the hyphenated names. When i thought about it, though, there were a a good number of teens i was working with 2 years back with hyphenated names – and like yours, a few more distinctive ones. (Think Kacey-Jay, Mollie-Anne, Ada-Lexi, Maisie-Jo, Mia-Rose, Summer-Rose, Libby-Jo)

Also like, three Kaiyas with that spelling – and a Tierney!

I would have finished school back in 2015 and these ones came up frequently or multiple times…

I graduated high school a little over 10 years ago with a class of ~65.

[name_m]The[/name_m] most popular name was [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] / [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]. 3 were boys and 3 were girls but there were 2 other Alexanders in my elementary school (with an even smaller class size of maybe 10?) although I think one of them was actually a year younger than me and a few more I met in college but I don’t think we were actually the same year. There were also 2 [name_m]Andrews[/name_m] in my elementary class as well

Here’s the names for the rest of my class. For some of the common names, I have trouble remembering which person they are. [name_m]Like[/name_m] I’m pretty sure at least one of my classmates was named [name_m]Michael[/name_m] but don’t remember which one or how many of them were named [name_m]Michael[/name_m] :grimacing: Usually more of a problem for the boy names since they are more likely to use common names and I didn’t really like most of the boys in HS but can sometimes apply to girls too like [name_f]Amanda[/name_f]. I also don’t always remember how they spelled their name if I wasn’t too close to them like was it [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f] or [name_f]Alissa[/name_f]?

It’s a bit difficult to keep up with ages after HS since they could have had a gap year or took an extra year to finish college or post grad or coming back for a 2nd degree

I’m also in [name_f]Sydney[/name_f], [name_m]Australia[/name_m], but probably graduated around 6 years earlier! In my year group there were a few unusual double ups: [name_f]Nicki[/name_f], [name_f]Toni[/name_f], [name_f]Angela[/name_f], [name_f]Susannah[/name_f]. [name_m]The[/name_m] most common girl names in my year by far were [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. At my first high school I think there were about 10 boys called [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] (I think all went by Alex). I don’t think I came across any hyphenated names at school.

Also I live in an area of [name_f]Sydney[/name_f] with a relatively high Chinese population. A lot of students had Chinese names but would go by [name_f]English[/name_f] names, some of which felt a bit more 1940s or so (e.g. [name_m]Gordon[/name_m], [name_f]Cindy[/name_f], Christine).

Based on the names I feel like you’re probably in the [name_m]Sutherland[/name_m] [name_f]Shire[/name_f]?

I went to a private boarding school and the entire school had less than 200 students, and from my memory, most of the students had unusual names. I did know a handful of Rebecca’s and Joshua’s and Brittany’s (including a pair of twins with these names lol), and I’m not sure where my yearbook is, but some of the names I remember include:

There were some normal ones like [name_f]Erin[/name_f], [name_m]Adam[/name_m], [name_m]Joe[/name_m], [name_f]Chelsea[/name_f], etc., typical 80s/90s names, but it felt like the minority of the class. We did have students from all over though, including [name_f]Romania[/name_f], [name_m]Brazil[/name_m], [name_m]South[/name_m] [name_f]Korea[/name_f], and Vietnam.
