Anyone know Greek? Xanthe pronunciation controversy

[name_f]My[/name_f] FH and I (not currently expecting) adore [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] for a girl, but I wanted to clarify pronunciation.

On Nameberry (and most name threads) it lists different pronunciations such as [name_m]ZAN[/name_m]-tha, ex-AHN-the, [name_m]ZAN[/name_m]-thee, etc., but people are quick to point out that [name_m]ZAN[/name_m]-thee is the correct pronunciation (which was our favorite anyway).

Then I saw on a different place (I think Behind the Name?) someone commented really annoyed because they said most people butcher the name [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] by pronouncing it [name_m]ZAN[/name_m]-thee, and that it’s actually KSAHN-thee. I had never heard that one before, but they seemed pretty adamant that it was correct.

I’m thrown for a mini-loop because I had thought the whole time that I was using the correct pronunciation and now I’m not so sure.

Anyone know anything?

Well, in Greece we pronounce it KSAHN - thee.

Not Greek, but I tend to say it with the very subtle K sound in front myself - same goes for [name_f]Xenia[/name_f] (of which my own name is a variation of). I also give it more an AHN rather than [name_f]ANN[/name_f] sound.

All that said, [name_m]ZAN[/name_m]-thee is what the majority of people you will come across (outside of Greece) will automatically say, and it’s certainly not bad pronounced that way. I love the name myself, and think it’s fantastic that you are (near) set on using it.

I’m Greek and speak Greek and yes, in Greek it’s pronounced KSAHN-thee. But I think that in English, you can probably pronounce it as you wish. [name_m]ZAHN[/name_m]-thee sounds close to the Greek.

I edited out the middle bit, but this is what I agree with. KSAHN is a hard sound to make if you’re unfamiliar with it, like the LL noise in Welsh. Therefore, just like it’s ok to say ‘loo-ell-in’ for Llewellyn, it should be ok to say ‘ZAN-thee’ for Xanthe.

I think it gets you the closest English approximation without complete butchery

Thank you so much everyone for all of your help! I was worried about using the incorrect pronunciation, but it seems to be the consensus that it’s alright to say [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] as [name_m]ZAN[/name_m]-thee as a variant, if you aren’t near Greece or anything. Very interesting to hear about KSAN-the in the first place, though - I’m surprised it wasn’t anywhere on NB!
