So I recently encountered a thread about the name [name_f]Minta[/name_f] here, which then lead me to the longer variations of [name_f]Araminta[/name_f] and [name_f]Aminta[/name_f]. I have heard [name_f]Aminta[/name_f] before and it was pronounced [name_m]Ah[/name_m] - MEEN -tuh, which also raises the question of pronunciation.
So do you prefer [name_f]Araminta[/name_f] or [name_f]Aminta[/name_f] and why?
Which pronunciation do you find prettier (not necessarily more intuitive, just prettier): -MEEN-ta or [name_u]MIN[/name_u]-ta?
I know some of you already expressed views recently about this name, so I appreciate the revisit!
With [name_f]Araminta[/name_f] comes more flexibility. [name_f]Minty[/name_f] can be used in early childhood, [name_f]Minta[/name_f] in the middle grades and high school and then when she’s ready to make her mark on the world, she can revert back to [name_f]Araminta[/name_f] in her professional life. I prefer the “[name_u]MIN[/name_u]-ta” pronunciation because I think it sounds softer. I have also seen Mintha as an option.
This is the only name I’ve found in this style that I would consider using myself.
I am not a nn person but I love the idea of calling a little girl [name_f]Minty[/name_f] or [name_f]Minta[/name_f]. It’s pretty cute. Not to mention I’m knitting a little dress in mint-colored yarn, which might be why I’m so drawn to this name right now.
I do prefer the -Meen-ta pronunciation as a whole for the name and my take is that [name_f]Araminta[/name_f] is a little more dramatic and fairytale with another option of going by [name_u]Ari[/name_u], whereas [name_f]Aminta[/name_f] is simpler and would be less inclined to nn – which appeals to me. So each have a certain charm to me, which makes it difficult!
I much prefer [name_f]Araminta[/name_f]. It’s so pretty! The nicknames [name_f]Minty[/name_f] and [name_f]Minta[/name_f] would be so cute too! I think “[name_u]MIN[/name_u]-ta” is prettier.
I’ve always liked [name_f]Araminta[/name_f] more than [name_f]Aminta[/name_f]. [name_f]Araminta[/name_f] seems more complete, sophisticated, romantic, and a bit frosty. [name_f]Aminta[/name_f] doesn’t compare.
I would pronounce [name_f]Araminta[/name_f] as [name_f]Air[/name_f]-UH-mint-uh, and [name_f]Aminta[/name_f] as Uh-MINT-uh.
I would instinctively pronounce each with the [name_u]MIN[/name_u] sound as opposed to MEEN.
I prefer [name_f]Araminta[/name_f]. It just seems more complete to me. [name_f]Aminta[/name_f] seems abrupt.
[name_f]Edit[/name_f]: After reading the pps I want to add that I pronounce it [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-ra-min-ta, not [name_f]Air[/name_f]-a-min-ta. The [name_f]Air[/name_f] seems more twangy, while the Ahr sounds nicer to me.
[name_f]Araminta[/name_f] by far, because I fell in love with this name since the first time I heard it. [name_f]Aminta[/name_f] is nice, but it lacks something, imo. I say it -MEEN-ta.
I love both - a lot! The syllable is [name_u]MIN[/name_u] for me. [name_f]Every[/name_f] time the name comes up here, the majority of people gravitate toward [name_f]Araminta[/name_f], but personally, I like [name_f]Aminta[/name_f] a little more. I think part of that is just how many Ar- names I hear lately - [name_f]Ariana[/name_f] and its variants, [name_u]Ariel[/name_u], [name_f]Ariella[/name_f], and [name_f]Aria[/name_f] are all really popular where I live. [name_f]Aminta[/name_f] feels a little different.
I’ve also noticed that I gravitate toward Am- names, like [name_f]Amandine[/name_f], [name_f]Ameline[/name_f], and [name_f]Amy[/name_f], so maybe it’s that I like the AM- front and center.
I prefer [name_f]Araminta[/name_f] pronounced Mint. However, I really don’t like either. [name_f]Araminta[/name_f] reminds me of [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] mixed with Mint chocolate chip ice cream. [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] is a really cut nickname though!
Thanks for the thoughts everyone! I love both though Aminta definitely fits into my style – whatever that means – a little bit better. I think Araminta does get a lot of love due to the popularity of “Ar” names out there right now, as Isolieth pointed out. And for good reason. It definitely adds a lot more grandeur. And that seems to be quite in favor right now too!
Another name I love is Calla and I think Calla & Aminta make a better sibset than Calla & Araminta.
For the record I automatically pronounce these names Ahr-a-MEEN-tuh with a softer version of “ahr” sound and Uh-MEEN-tuh. Though I figured the majority would pronounce mint as mint.
