What do you think about [name_m]Archer[/name_m] for a girl? I know it is typically a boy name, but that isn’t a deal breaker for us. (Our first daughter’s name is [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]). I really like it for a girl, but my wife is on the fence. Any opinons?
One of my pet peeves is boys names in girls. [name_m]Archer[/name_m] is firmly a boys name. [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] is more unisex. I would keep looking
Agreed, not a boy name on girls fan.
Also not a boys name on a girl fan (I looove [name_m]Archer[/name_m] AND [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] for a boy!) so I’ll have to say no.
Obviously, this is not a pet peeve for me. [name_m]How[/name_m] is it firmly a boy’s name?
I like [name_m]Archer[/name_m] for a girl. I don’t think word names or names in general have specific genders, and I think [name_m]Archer[/name_m] would be super cute with [name_u]Emerson[/name_u].
I don’t see [name_m]Archer[/name_m] as a word name or something gender nuetral at all. That is why I, personally, would say it is firmly a boy name. To me it would be the same as naming a little girl [name_m]Otis[/name_m].
That reads like “The reason I don’t think it is gender neutral is because I don’t think it’s gender neutral”. I am only asking if there is some reason for your opinion, or is it just how you feel, without anything really causing you to feel that way?
Can you (or anyone) point me to any known people, men or women, who have the name? I’m not sure I’ve ever seen it used. I feel like it is gender neutral, rather than masculine, but that may be because I’ve never heard of anyone, man or woman, who has the name.
Yes and you asked for opinions and I’m giving you mine. My sons have 2 different little boy friends named [name_m]Archer[/name_m]. My husband when I asked him what he thought of naming a girl [name_m]Archer[/name_m] said ‘like the comic? Yikes!’
Again, boy names on girls are not my jam but if you don’t mind it at the end of the day pick what you love. It doesn’t matter what any of us think. I just agree with the majority of posts so far that you’ve received that [name_m]Archer[/name_m] is a male name.
Personally, I couldn’t disagree with previous posters more. [name_m]Archer[/name_m] is a great name! And it is definitely not a boy name. It’s a unisex name. In fact, the only [name_m]Archer[/name_m] I’ve ever met was a girl. We went to high school together and everyone called her [name_m]Archie[/name_m]. [name_m]How[/name_m] awesome is that? She was super smart and well-liked, and everyone knew who she was because of her cool, unique name.
Honestly, I don’t like the name [name_m]Archer[/name_m] at all (maybe because my only association is the cartoon), but I do feel that it screams “BOY”. However, people name their daughters [name_u]Ryan[/name_u] and [name_u]James[/name_u] these days, so I don’t see how [name_m]Archer[/name_m] would be that different.
It seems like a boys name to me. I think it’s because I categorize it with other “arch” names like [name_m]Archie[/name_m] and [name_m]Archibald[/name_m], both of which are masculine.
It seems like you’ve already made up your mind. So why are you asking for opinions? Trolling?
I prefer it for a boy. However, there’s Archana which could also lead you to the nn [name_m]Archie[/name_m] (like the actress)
I think these answers represent the varying reactions you would get, and I do think [name_m]Archer[/name_m] comes off as more masculine than [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] or some other similar “occupational” names, like [name_u]Harper[/name_u] or [name_u]Piper[/name_u]. It’s far more common for boys — U.S. data shows 18 girls named [name_m]Archer[/name_m] nationwide in 2014 compared to 1,171 boys. That’s similar to [name_u]Hunter[/name_u] (362 girls, 8,759 boys), and there’s probably some conscious or subconscious belief that weapon-related names are more suited for boys.
I personally feel kind of “meh” about it. It wouldn’t be weird at all where I live, girl or boy, but it feels like it’s trying a little too hard to be hip. Like how all the organic hipster baby clothes these days are covered in arrow motifs.
I disagree with most of the posters here. While typically used for boys, I see it similar to a word name which is gender neutral. I wouldn’t bat an eye seeing it on a girl. Go for it.
No! Because [name_m]Archer[/name_m] is not a feminine name. Why? Because people started to give it on boys centuries ago. [name_m]Archer[/name_m]'s roots and etymology are masculine.
I’m not against unisex names, but people have to stop naming their girls [name_m]Atlas[/name_m], [name_m]Archer[/name_m], [name_u]Elliott[/name_u], [name_m]Felix[/name_m] because it does not seem cool but stupid, in my opinion. You would just complicate your daughter’s life because of a selfish choice.
[name_u]Love[/name_u] it! [name_u]Unique[/name_u] and spunky and cute.
It’s a no from me.
We are free to name our child whatever we want but most of us want to avoid doing something that would cause hassles/embarrassment, or for them to feel uncomfortable with our choice of a name. We do hope that our child will love their name and it will serve them well in all facets of their life. Now, choosing a traditionally boy’s name for a girl isn’t the end of the world. We do see it, especially among celebrities, but one should ask ourselves if it is attention seeking on OUR behalf, or is it truly the perfect name you want to bestow on your child?
