We are naming a little girl, with the catch that her name (or at least a nickname) has to work in both Slovak and [name_f]English[/name_f]. We love [name_u]Auden[/name_u], after the poet, and could shorten it to Ad’a (pronounced “Adya”), which is a fairly common nickname in Slovak (usually for names like Adel). Alternatively, I’ve heard a lot of people say they prefer [name_u]Arden[/name_u], and I love the connection to the forest in “As You Like It”. We would probably use the same nickname Ad’a in Slovak. The full version of either would be very unusual (unheard of) in Slovakia. [name_u]Or[/name_u] a very different alternative is [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] - my grandmother, whom I was very close to, and the kind of person that everyone who knew her would immediately understand why we would name a child after her. It’s not my favourite name, but it is perhaps easier for the Slovak half of our family (Margareta in Slovak), and there are some great nicknames to work with like [name_f]Ettie[/name_f], [name_f]Maisie[/name_f], [name_f]Mara[/name_f] or even [name_u]Rhett[/name_u] if something less feminine suits her better. I’d love to hear opinions as I change my mind back and forth almost daily. We have a son [name_m]Leonard[/name_m] (pronounced the Slovak way, “Lay-o-nard”, frequently shortened to [name_u]Leo[/name_u], “Lay-o”). Also I haven’t lived in the US for 16 years, but we will probably move back in the next few years, so please don’t hesitate to alert me to naming trends or factors I might not be aware of – I feel a bit out of touch! Thanks a lot!
I’m not in the US but my sense of things would be to probably not use [name_u]Arden[/name_u] with [name_m]Leonard[/name_m] - even though it’s pronounced Layonard, they’re too similar for me - sharing so many letters including “Ard”. I really like [name_u]Auden[/name_u], it’s so gentle and pretty (has a lovely meaning and is a great nod to the poet) but it’s also pretty close to [name_m]Leonard[/name_m]. It would be my pick or the two. I prefer it to [name_u]Arden[/name_u] anyway.
I would otherwise just use [name_f]Ada[/name_f] (potentially using A’da for the Slovak family and [name_f]Ada[/name_f] in [name_f]English[/name_f] speaking contexts if it’s not too confusing to use both). I do wonder if [name_u]Auden[/name_u] nn Ad’a (instead of Audie) is almost two different names?
But I do think [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] or even [name_f]Margot[/name_f] is a great pairing with [name_m]Leonard[/name_m]. I really like [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Meg[/name_f], [name_f]Maisie[/name_f], [name_f]Mara[/name_f] or even [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] as nn for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_u]Auden[/name_u] could be very beautiful - you may not need a family honour middle if you use [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] in first.
So, with [name_m]Leonard[/name_m], my picks would be [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] (first) or else [name_u]Auden[/name_u] or just [name_f]Ada[/name_f] (Auden [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] or [name_f]Ada[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] would be lovely).
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] that helps! ![]()
I live in Central Europe and still [name_u]Auden[/name_u] gets my vote
it sounds lovely with [name_m]Leonard[/name_m] and I don’t see a problem of it not being known in Slovakia as long as it has a nn that your daughter would be able to use with that side of a family - Aďa (Adya) is just lovely ![]()
[name_m]Even[/name_m] though [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] might be a bit more common in that part of Europe, I wouldn’t use it if it’s not your favourite.
[name_u]Or[/name_u] I’d just use it as a middle name just like the previous user suggested. You should choose a name that you really love ![]()
And [name_u]Auden[/name_u] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is simply beautiful ![]()

my cousin is named @uden and the name fits her so beautifully! it would absolutely be on my list if not for her. I like [name_u]Arden[/name_u] too but [name_u]Auden[/name_u] is softer, plus the poet connection is a bonus. Maybe you’d like [name_u]Alden[/name_u] too? I think Ad’a works perfectly as a nickname for [name_u]Auden[/name_u]!
[name_u]Auden[/name_u] is wonderful - I like the poetic feel and the potential nickname ![]()
I am in the US! Congrats on baby girl!
Either [name_u]Auden[/name_u] or [name_u]Arden[/name_u] would for sure fit right in but neither are super popular, at least at the moment (Auden is not in the SSA top 1000 and [name_u]Arden[/name_u] was #952 in 2019) so she would definitely be unique! Both names wouldn’t be an issue at all pronunciation wise!
[name_u]Auden[/name_u] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is so sweet sounding if you want to go that route! Maybe that way you get the best of both worlds?
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] the move goes well! ![]()
[name_u]Auden[/name_u]! I love it and it sounds like it’s your preferred name too!

It’s [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] for me !!
[name_u]Auden[/name_u] is masculine to me, but I do see the attraction.
