We really like the name [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] Glass… but unfortunately it shortens into OMG! [name_m]How[/name_m] bad is this and will we regret it?
(We also like [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] [name_m]Jacob[/name_m], but OJ is too much to bear)
I honestly think that there are worse. It would probably be a novelty to other kids that figure it out, but not for long. I wouldn’t worry about it too much, especially since it’s such a handsome name you’ve picked out!
Kids will probably be using a completely different slang by the time he’s old enough to understand. Also, it could be a really cute birth announcement: “OMG, it’s OMG!”
I would not use it. That would definitely turn me off enough to not do it. Maybe that’s my personal convictions, but I don’t like the term OMG, and I wouldn’t want my kids talking about what it stands for, and we personally do not use it, because it does NOT stand for “Oh my goodness”, it stands for something else that we don’t say and is offensive to a lot of people.
What does it stand for if not “oh my gosh”? That is the only way I have ever heard it used. I suppose you could replace that g with God or goodness, but 99.9% of the time, it is gosh…
I don’t think it’s too bad, in my mind OMG, stands for Oh My Gosh/ Goodness, which isn’t offensive. And in every day life middle names don’t really come up. My initials are JAAM (or [name_m]JAM[/name_m] without the 2nd mn), and no one even knew until I told them myself.
I think it’s fine. Not many people will know anyway, considering middle names aren’t really used in everyday situations. Plus, if he ever becomes a rapper, he’s got an instant stage name to use.
The short answer is no. Unless a child’s initials spell something obviously unpleasant like BAD or FAT etc I don’t believe many people will even notice. Also OMG has a generally fun and pleasant association in the general population, in Australia at least, it is as neutral as an exclamation point. The extreme religious folk may have a slight problem if they were to notice, but it is unlikely that they will.
[name_f]IMO[/name_f] kids would think it was cool, but if I saw that in a business setting, my subconscious reaction would be to take the person less seriously (not saying it is rational). However, initials aren’t THAT important in life - really, besides an LL [name_m]Bean[/name_m] backpack and electronic signatures, how often do you use them? And he would have the option of just using OG as well.
Have to side with the religious right here and say I find omg distasteful, as the first commandment is not to take Gods name in vain, and using gosh or goodness are just thin veils over it.
Having said that… go with the name you love, and just raise your boy tobe respectful and I think only a small minority would notice!
