Some names from mythology sound sweet as a baby name, but others are too “fantasy” sounding. I’m curious about your opinions on these girl names and if you think they’re suitable as a real name or too far-fetched ! Some nicknames would be interesting too!
I think they’re all perfectly usable! to me, Persephone is probably the most ‘safe’ option as it seems to be gaining popularity and also feels similar to the sweet, well-loved Penelope. But all of them seem wearable!!
some of my favourite mythology names are:
greek -
Artemis - goddess of the hunt and the moon
Gaia - personification of mother earth
Asteria - goddess of the falling stars
Theia - goddess of sight
Hera - goddess of women and childbirth
Athena - goddess of wisdom and war
roman -
Minerva - goddess of wisdom
Flora - goddess of flowers and soring
Juno - queen of goddesses
Lucina - goddess of childbirth
[name_u]Calypso[/name_u] is really cute! Especially with the nickname [name_u]Cal[/name_u] or [name_f]Callie[/name_f].
[name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] is pretty far fetched but it could work. Same for [name_f]Persephone[/name_f].
[name_f]Venus[/name_f] reminds me of the razor brand, but if not for that association, totally useable!
I can totally picture a real-life girl called [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] or [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]!
[name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] feels too bold to me. It carries a lot of associations and expectations about beauty that might cause pressure or insecurity. [name_f]Venus[/name_f] has the same associations, but it does feel wearable on [name_f]Venus[/name_f] [name_m]Williams[/name_m], plus the planet makes it less “love/beauty goddess” to me.
Some girls mythological names I like are [name_f]Athena[/name_f], [name_f]Atalanta[/name_f], [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], [name_f]Eurydice[/name_f], and [name_f]Iris[/name_f]
I know a [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] and she wears it beautifully! I also really like [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] and [name_f]Venus[/name_f], not as much a fan of [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] as I feel it’s the least wearable one.
I think [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] might be a little bit too much for my taste, and [name_f]Venus[/name_f] has a similar vibe to [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f], but [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] and [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] are really cute names and I think perfectly usable :3
[name_u]Calypso[/name_u] -whimsical and interesting with grounding nn [name_f]Callie[/name_f] and [name_u]Coco[/name_u]
[name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] -bold but still familiar
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f] -i believe it’s in the US top 1000 now. I love it and it’s similarity to [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] makes it feel more usable
[name_f]Venus[/name_f] -reminds me a bit of the razor brand. Not sure if that’s a problem where you are
Some mythical names i like are: [name_f]Elara[/name_f], [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], [name_u]Hero[/name_u], [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f], [name_f]Atalanta[/name_f]
These names all feel a bit too far-fetched to me.
Nicknames for [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] could be [name_f]Lily[/name_f] or [name_m]Cas[/name_m]. For [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]: Aph, Aphie, [name_f]Didi[/name_f] or [name_f]Adie[/name_f]. For [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]: [name_u]Percy[/name_u], [name_u]Perry[/name_u], Pep or Seph. For [name_f]Venus[/name_f]: [name_m]Ven[/name_m], [name_f]Venie[/name_f] or Vens. I like [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Irene[/name_f], [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and [name_f]Flora[/name_f].
I think [name_f]Venus[/name_f] you can get away with because of the tennis player. It is still a little out there, but to most people, the name on a human isn’t completely unheard of.
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f] is the most usable in my opinion, I absolutely love it! I would use it myself with the nickname [name_f]Effie[/name_f] which I love if it fit in with my sibset. I only wouldn’t use it as a middle name for my current baby I’m pregnant with because one of my daughter’s middle names is [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] and I don’t want to be too matchy matchy.
I don’t think [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] is usable at all and I am leaning towards the same for [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] even though I have seen it used in the middle name spot a few times over the last few years.
A few mythological names I like are [name_f]Antigone[/name_f], [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f], [name_f]Minerva[/name_f], and [name_f]Cybele[/name_f].
I know someone in person called [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] and it totally works as a real life name!
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f] and [name_f]Venus[/name_f] also work, thanks to the more popular [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], and [name_f]Venus[/name_f] [name_m]Williams[/name_m].
[name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] is beautiful and I have met someone with this name - but luckily for her she was actually really beautiful. If she wasn’t… I feel like this name would be an awkward burden. I wouldn’t personally name my daughter this especially in a world where there’s already going to be so much pressure for her to look pretty. But that’s just my take!
I think [name_f]Venus[/name_f] is the most daring there, with [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] being the safest followed by [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] and then [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]. I associate [name_f]Venus[/name_f] with the razors and it’s a lot of name to live up to imo.
Persy and Sephy for [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], [name_f]Callie[/name_f] for [name_u]Calypso[/name_u], [name_f]Aphra[/name_f] and Ditie (maybe… As in the last syllable) and then [name_f]Vivi[/name_f] for [name_f]Venus[/name_f].
I also like [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f], [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Athena[/name_f] off the top of my head!
[name_u]Calypso[/name_u] - seems usable especially since it is also a style of music so not completely linked to mythology
[name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] - this one seems the most brave, only due to [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] being the godess of love and meant to be the most beautiful, i could see it leading to teasing
Peresephone - i think this one is safe, though i did hear someone pronounce it Per-se-phone instead of Per-sef-oh-nee so could be one that needs to be explained a few times
[name_f]Venus[/name_f] - probably the most safe of any of the options, especially with [name_f]Venus[/name_f] [name_m]Williams[/name_m] making it more well known
Mythological Names I like are (though some are a little more out there)
In order of wearable-ness: [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], [name_u]Calypso[/name_u], [name_f]Venus[/name_f], [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f].
I’ve seen [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] used before. I feel like its usability is aided by the popularity of [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] as it has the same rhythm.
Calypso’s has [name_f]Callie[/name_f] as a potential nickname which is a nice option if she wants something a little less out there at some point.
[name_f]Venus[/name_f] is aided by the tennis player.
[name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] is harder to use as the goddess would always be my first thought. It is almost “too wordy” even though it isn’t a word.
I agree with this. Aphrodite feels like a pretty loaded name, which comes with a lot of assumptions and expectations about beauty and sensuality — a bit much for a baby name (of course babies grow up, but still).
Venus is bold but usable, I agree that the tennis player makes it more familiar and wearable, plus it’s shorter and less “heavy” than Aphrodite.
Calypso is bright, fun and quirky. To me it’s musical as much as mythological. I really like it!
Persephone feels totally wearable to me, it’s uncommon but very well established here in the UK. Lots of nice nickname potential too.
My favourite mythological names are Juno, Hero, Io, Artemis, Gaia, Helena, Ariadne, Flora, Hesper/Vesper, Thisbe…
The only one I think is definitely usable is [name_u]Calypso[/name_u]. She’s a less familiar mythological figure than the other three, and she fits right in with all the other [name_f]Callie[/name_f] names.
[name_f]Venus[/name_f] sort of works because of the [name_f]Venus[/name_f] [name_m]Williams[/name_m] precedent, but there’s also the razor and the planet so it feels like maybe too many associations to me.
[name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] and [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] are both a lot of name. [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] is my favorite myth, and the berries on the whole seem to be down with her, but I just can’t imagine it on a real person. And since the myth is often referred to as “the rape of Persephone,” I’m not sure I’d want to bestow it on a daughter.
