Are these names terrible, or is my mom being difficult?

So, my husband and I have agreed on a few girl names that we love. We plan to go into the delivery with these, and (if the baby is a girl) pick the name when we meet her. My mom hates all the names though, and won’t stop suggesting other names. It’s driving me crazy, but I’m pretty good at ignoring her when I want. I just want to make sure that these names aren’t totally crazy/hippie/weird. I would love to hear if you can think of anything particularly wrong with these names, and which names, if any, you like best.
[name]Sage[/name]- probably our favorite right now
[name]Tabitha[/name]
[name]Wren[/name]
[name]Callie[/name]

Possible alternates:
[name]Hope[/name]
[name]Joy[/name]

The middle name will be Eilonwy (eye-LAWN-wee). She is our very favorite female literary character, and a name we just can’t let go. If the flow is really bad, we might use a double middle name to make it work better.
So what do you think? Are we nuts? We have looked at other girl names, but none of them quite compare for us.
Thanks in advance for your feedback.

p.s. The names my mom keeps pushing are [name]Lindee[/name] and [name]Emma[/name]. [name]Don[/name]'t know why she has latched onto these, but I’m just not a fan.

I don’t see anything wrong with the names. They’re not really my style, but there’s nothing wrong with them. I’ve never heard Eilonwy before. I really love it! [name]Sage[/name] Eilonwy is the best, to me. [name]Tabitha[/name] Eilonwy is too long, and sounds too “medieval witch” to me. [name]Callie[/name] Eilonwy is too L and “ee” heavy. [name]Wren[/name] Eilonwy is too W and N heavy. [name]Sage[/name] Eilonwy is just perfect!

My favorites from your list (in order) are:

[name]Sage[/name]
[name]Hope[/name]
[name]Wren[/name]

I like your middle name choice also! I don’t think that there is anything wrong with your list! I’m sure once she arrives your mom will love whatever name you choose.

Congratulations!

Thanks mge28! I agree that [name]Sage[/name] Eilonwy has the best sound. And just FYI, Eilonwy is the main female character in the book series by [name]Lloyd[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] called the Prydain chronicles. The second is the most well known: The [name]Black[/name] Cauldron. They are a juvenile fantasy series that I recommend to everyone to read. They are our favorite books.

Thanks elliebellie! I hope you’re right!

I think the names are beautiful! My favourites are [name]Sage[/name] Eilonwy or [name]Wren[/name] Eilonwy. Looking at your signature I see your sons name is [name]Everett[/name], I think [name]Everett[/name] and [name]Wren[/name] would be a great sib set. I also love the literary connection with the middle name, my husband and I chose middle names that have personal meaning to us and my eldest middle name [name]Hope[/name] is the name of a character from my favourite book

When you name a baby someone will always dislike the name you choose because everyone has a different style or criteria they think a name should fit. Plus the world would be a very boring place if everyone liked the same names! Your Mum will adjust and come to love the name even if she doesn’t like it at first because she will love her grandchild

Your mother’s suggestions are a total snooze-fest compared to your choices. Stand strong!
My mom can hardly pronounce my children’s names (she’s Mexican) but never gave me any grief about them.
I’m sure once the baby is born and the name is finalized, she’ll back off and embrace it.
I think [name]Sage[/name] Eilonwy is the best of your selections. By far!

I definitely like [name]Sage[/name] or [name]Wren[/name] the best. And no, you’re not crazy, you and your mom are just suffering from generational gap. I fully expect my mother and I to do the same thing when it’s time for my SO and me to pick names… or really make any decision that has to do with our kids. So hang in there!

Seconded. [name]Sage[/name] Eilonwy is my favorite of your choices too. My next favorite would be [name]Hope[/name]. (on their own, I like [name]Callie[/name] and [name]Joy[/name]- but I don’t think they sound well with Eilonwy)

Remind your mom that she got her chance to name her own kid(s) and now it’s your turn!

[name]Tabitha[/name] and [name]Sage[/name] flow the best with Eilonwy (which I love by the way.) I love all your choices, and they are definitely not too weird. I learned to not even discuss names with my Mom… she hated [name]Rowan[/name] at first because it sounded like a last name and it was too “out there” and it really hurt my feelings when she dissed it. But I’ve come to the conclusion that Mom’s are just naturally over critical of their children’s choices and are trying to help in some backwards, annoying way.

[name]Sage[/name] gets my vote as well, though really all of them are great. I’m not a fan of [name]Tabitha[/name], but I think that’s just due to personal connections. I can see the appeal. [name]Callie[/name], to me is a nn. [name]Calista[/name] nn [name]Callie[/name] maybe? I kind of like [name]Calista[/name] Eilonwy [name]Sage[/name]. It’s so easy to let our family’s opinions get in our head, isn’t it? Best of luck and just remember your mother will love the name once it’s attached to her own beautiful grandchild!

I think your mom is being difficult, though I must say I really have no fondness towards [name]Sage[/name] on a girl at all. I just start feeling itchy and annoyed when I hear it on a girl. :frowning:

I really enjoy [name]Hope[/name] though.

I like your names. [name]Lindee[/name] and [name]Emma[/name]? O_o [name]Lindee[/name] is just… odd to me, and [name]Emma[/name] isn’t too exciting. Maybe you could compromise with her, and use [name]Emma[/name]/[name]Lindee[/name] as a middle name; that way she could use it as her special pet name for her (which, [name]IMO[/name], would be kind of adorable).

And yes, she is being rather difficult. My grandparents had a hard time coming to terms with my brother’s name (which is admittedly odd) and asked if they could call him ‘E.J.’ (his first/middle initials). My parents said NO, they got over it, and 20 years later happily call him by his given name (just like everyone else). So you COULD just put your foot down, and she’ll get over it when she realizes that her granddaughter is more important than her granddaughter’s name.

As far as fitting [name]Emma[/name] into your names goes, [name]Emma[/name] Eilonwy as a double middle name would kinda work with most of your first name options.

Also, if you used [name]Calinda[/name], you could call her [name]Callie[/name], and she could call her [name]Lindee[/name].

I like your names, I think they are modern, soft and have a nature type feel.
Your mum is perhaps not realising that these days many children have more unique names.
[name]Emma[/name] is classic- but not your style at all.
[name]Lindee[/name] sounds more like a 55yo nurse.

Your mom is being difficult. You have some great names on your list. Eilonwy has always been a favorite of mine as well. I love pp’s suggestion of [name]Callista[/name] Eilonwy [name]Sage[/name]! [name]IMO[/name] [name]Tabitha[/name] and [name]Sage[/name] sound the best with Eilonwy, though I do like your other choices as well. [name]Wren[/name] is adorable, and [name]Callie[/name] is dear to my heart as it’s the name of my best friend (short for [name]Callista[/name] in her case).

@east93: [name]Sage[/name] on a boy drives me nuts! I’ve only ever met female [name]Sage[/name]'s and just can’t imagine a male [name]Sage[/name].

I love your names! [name]Sage[/name] and [name]Wren[/name] are great, [name]Tabitha[/name] is one of my all time favourites and i’ve always had a big soft spot for [name]Callie[/name]. Once the baby arrives and your mum has bonded with her (if it is a her) then she’ll love her name, whatever it is! She’s being massively awkward, its really naughty of her. [name]Don[/name]'t worry, all your names are really good and strong. And [name]Lindee[/name] is awful imo!

I’ll be blunt. Eilonwy is definitely weird but I’m sure you already know that. Pairing it with [name]Sage[/name] or [name]Wren[/name] makes a very weird/hippie-ish combo. [name]Callie[/name] is nicknamey and since your son’s mn is [name]Callan[/name] it’s a bit redundant

I personally prefer nature names, like [name]Sage[/name] and [name]Wren[/name]. Although I don’t like either, [name]Emma[/name] and [name]Tabitha[/name] are a great fit with [name]Everett[/name].

It’s ‘ay-lon-wee’ if it’s as Welsh as it looks! Like [name]Eira[/name] is (ay-ra).

I love all your names! [name]Don[/name]'t worry!

I love [name]Sage[/name]!! Its definately my favourite from your list and I think it flows best with your middle name choice! My second choice would be [name]Hope[/name] then [name]Tabitha[/name]. I’m really not a fan of [name]Wren[/name] as a full name… I like it only as a nn for [name]Florence[/name] and [name]Callie[/name] I love but only as a nn too… I love [name]Calypso[/name], [name]Calliope[/name], [name]Calista[/name]. I don’t think your names are too out there! Though I guess I’m a fan of names that are a little quirky!

Having given my opinion…My advise would be to choose a name you love with all your heart… And don’t worry about others opinions  I’ve learned that EVERYONE’s got one when it comes to baby names but at the end of the day it’s your daughter! You will know in your heart what her name is when you meet her I am sure!!!
