Are these names too similar?

I can’t remember if I’ve already posted this question here, so forgive me if this is a repeat…

Are the names [name]Levi[/name] and [name]Eli[/name] too similar? Our son’s name is [name]Levi[/name], and we are currently expecting baby #2 in [name]December[/name] (gender unknown). I really like the name [name]Eli[/name], but my husband thinks it sounds too much like [name]Levi[/name].

I’m just looking for opinions on whether or not you think they sound too much alike, and if you think that would be a problem.

I think they sound too close…it would be confusing. What about [name]Ezra[/name]? [name]Abram[/name]? [name]Felix[/name]?

Yes-- [name]Eli[/name] is simply [name]Levi[/name] with one letter missing. And an identical ending sound. And an identical language of origin.

Anything else on the list?

I do think [name]Eli[/name] is much too similar to [name]Levi[/name]. I think it could be a problem.

I can just imagine someone calling for one child or the other and they both respond. The long ‘e’ an ‘i’ sounds are in the same positions.

I personally like them together!

[name]Say[/name] “[name]Levi[/name] and [name]Eli[/name]” really fast. It gets a bit jumbled, I must say.
My brother’s middle name is [name]Levi[/name] and my cousin’s name is [name]Eli[/name].
Have you considered using it in the middle??

~[name]Jasmine[/name]

Maybe it could work in the middle, but I don’t see it working in the first name place. Too similar.

Is it biblical connection that appeals to you?

If so, I think blade’s suggestion of [name]Ezra[/name] could work really well for you. Also:
[name]Asa[/name]
[name]Micah[/name]
[name]Seth[/name]

I think it would definitely be a problem. [name]Imagine[/name] your two boys are playing upstairs, and you need to call one of them down for a favour. From far away, [name]Levi[/name] and [name]Eli[/name] are going to sound way too similar to be distinguishable from each other at that distance.

I think [name]Levi[/name] and [name]Elijah[/name]/[name]Elias[/name]/[name]Elliot[/name] would work perfectly fine. I also like the suggestions of [name]Ezra[/name], [name]Abram[/name], [name]Felix[/name], [name]Asa[/name] and [name]Micah[/name].

I think they’re too close, sorry. Have you considered a longer form of [name]Eli[/name], or thought about using it as a middle instead? Either would let you use the name but there wouldn’t be the same problem you have with your sons’ names being too close.

I think they would be way too close for siblings, sorry, but maybe you could use it as a middle?

What about:
[name]Ellis[/name]
[name]Ellery[/name]
[name]Ezekiel[/name]
[name]Easton[/name]
[name]Edsel[/name]
[name]Elijah[/name]

Or:
[name]Calvin[/name]
[name]Ian[/name]
[name]Lucas[/name]
[name]Amos[/name]
[name]Silas[/name]
[name]Isaac[/name]
[name]Isaiah[/name]
Zoriah
[name]Uriah[/name]
[name]Ulysses[/name]

Sorry, I think they are too close too :frowning:

Would you consider [name]Elijah[/name] and just call him [name]Eli[/name]?

Thanks for the replies everyone. To address a few points:

We’re set on the name [name]Philip[/name] for a middle name (family name).

We really like Biblical names

We don’t like names with common shortened forms.

Other names on our list are [name]Aaron[/name], [name]Adam[/name], and [name]Jethro[/name].

I do think they are too similar; though [name]Elijah[/name] would be ok with [name]Levi[/name] :). Good luck!

I think [name]Jethro[/name] [name]Phillip[/name] sounds great! I know a 4 year old called [name]Jethro[/name] - I was surprised when I first heard it but it really suits him and is such a cute yet cool name.

It feels odd to say that I think [name]Levi[/name] and [name]Eli[/name] are too close (esp after just advocating for [name]Elliott[/name] and [name]Emerie[/name] yesterday) but I think that because both names are too short for natural nn’s (and esp natural nn’s that are clearly distinguishable from one another) I think they are too close.

They do sound similar- maybe that’s why I love them both! Maybe if [name]Eli[/name] was short for something like [name]Elias[/name] or [name]Elijah[/name] they would feel more distinct? Good luck!

[name]Amos[/name] [name]Philip[/name]!

[name]Both[/name] are such great names, but I’m afraid they do sound a bit too similar to use for siblings. I envision years of the boys being confused over whose name you’re calling out, and new acquaintances getting the names of your boys mixed up even after several meetings. [name]Both[/name] of the names you like are short and have a biblical vibe, so perhaps you might consider [name]Silas[/name], [name]Ezra[/name], or [name]Micah[/name] instead.

[name]Just[/name] saw your last note. I think [name]Aaron[/name] [name]Phillip[/name] sounds great, and [name]Levi[/name] and [name]Aaron[/name] would make a great sib set. [name]Adam[/name] would also work well. Not loving [name]Jethro[/name], though…can’t get over the [name]Beverly[/name] Hillbillies association I guess, haha.
