We are in seach of a baby girl name for our third. Our son was trying to say his great grandmother’s name [name_f]Mariah[/name_f] and said [name_f]Ariah[/name_f] instead.
I love it and it has meaning but will be more unique to her!
But how do you say it? [name_m]How[/name_m] is it pronounced in Pretty little liars and in Game of thrones?
Her siblings names are [name_m]Olin[/name_m] and [name_f]Calla[/name_f].
Thanks for your help!
Edit is Aria (A-ree-ah) pronounced different than Ariah (A-rye-ah)? Or are they interchangeable? Will I put her through a lifetime of I am A-rye-ah after being called A-ree-ah???
I think a lot of people would mispronounce [name_f]Ariah[/name_f] and think it was just an alternate spelling of [name_f]Aria[/name_f]. But if you really like the name, I think you should use it.
I love [name_f]Aria[/name_f] and pronounce it like they do in Pretty [name_m]Little[/name_m] Liars, [name_m]AH[/name_m]-ree-uh. A long ‘ah’ sound to begin with and then your typical ree-uh ending ([name_f]Maria[/name_f], [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] etc etc). [name_u]Arya[/name_u] from Game of Thrones is pronounced with two syllables instead of your typical three; ARE-yah. I don’t like that pronunciation because it just sounds like “Are ya…” as in the beginning of a question.
[name_f]Ariah[/name_f] isn’t my cup of tea either, I also don’t like your pronunciation for it.
[name_f]Aria[/name_f] is definitely the best choice. It’s are-ee-ah. I can’t speak much towards [name_u]Arya[/name_u]'s pronunciation, as I don’t care to watch the show it is featured on, but it just looks really bad to me.
[name_u]Arya[/name_u] can be pronounced ar-ee-uh as well, but [name_m]George[/name_m] R.R. [name_m]Martin[/name_m], author of the Song of Ice and [name_m]Fire[/name_m] series pronounces it more like are-yuh.
[name_m]Just[/name_m] by looking at it, I’d assume [name_f]Ariah[/name_f] was a creative misspelling of [name_f]Aria[/name_f]. I get the logic behind [name_f]Mariah[/name_f]=[name_f]Ariah[/name_f], but without explanation that’s not so easy for other people to see. I’m not really sure how to circumvent the pronunciation issues you might encounter… All in all, I think [name_f]Aria[/name_f] pronounced ar-ee-uh is a better choice, or just name her [name_f]Mariah[/name_f] after her great grandmother.
I’d pronounce [name_f]Ariah[/name_f] the same as [name_f]Aria[/name_f]/[name_u]Arya[/name_u]. So perhaps you should go with one of those instead? [name_m]Olin[/name_m], [name_f]Calla[/name_f] and [name_f]Aria[/name_f] or [name_m]Olin[/name_m], [name_f]Calla[/name_f] and [name_u]Arya[/name_u] sounds like a great sibset!
I pronounce [name_f]Aria[/name_f] as [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-ree-uh and [name_u]Arya[/name_u] as ar-yuh. I could see [name_f]Ariah[/name_f] being pronounced as either [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-ree-uh or uh-[name_m]Rye[/name_m]-uh. If you want the name to be pronounced uh-[name_m]Rye[/name_m]-uh I would definitely spell it [name_f]Ariah[/name_f] as [name_f]Aria[/name_f] and [name_u]Arya[/name_u] are not pronounced this way. You will still probably have some people who pronounce it [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-ree-uh, but as long as that doesn’t bother you I think it’s definitely usable. If you think it will bother you than I’d use it in the middle spot instead.
[name_f]Aria[/name_f] is so pretty! I pronounce it AR-ee-uh, as well. I prefer the spelling [name_f]Aria[/name_f] to [name_u]Arya[/name_u], but I think both are equally usable. I just don’t like the AR-ya pronunciation.
As for [name_f]Ariah[/name_f], I think it’s beautiful, and I love [name_f]Mariah[/name_f], too! When I saw the name of the thread, I thought to myself, “[name_f]Aria[/name_f], A-rye-uh, [name_f]Aria[/name_f]…” So my first instinct was to pronounce it like [name_f]Mariah[/name_f] rather than [name_f]Aria[/name_f].
I think everyone’s perception is different, and like with most names, she will probably get, “Oh, is it [name_f]Aria[/name_f] or A-rye-uh?” And that’ll be the end of it. I think the H at the end would make people wanna say it like “-ryuh,” especially since it’s only one letter off of [name_f]Mariah[/name_f].
I would say A-ree-ah but I can see how [name_f]Ariah[/name_f] can be A-rye-ah. So if that’s the preffered pronunciation definitely use that spelling. In PLL and GOT it’s A-ree-ah, and pretty popular right now so I’m sure there will be pronunciation issues at times.
