Aria/Arya, Nora, suggestions

Hello! My husband and I currently have a daughter named [name]Nora[/name] and are looking for a name for her little sister. We both love the name [name]Arya[/name] ([name]Aria[/name]), as it’s the name of one of our absolute favorite characters in A Song of Ice and [name]Fire[/name]. We’ve been fans of the series for many years, long before Game of Thrones came to HBO, but both spellings of the name have jumped up the charts over the last couple of years. (Since 2009 [name]Aria[/name] jumped from 510 to 353 to 157; [name]Arya[/name] from not being in top 1000 to 941 to 711.)

So we have a couple of questions…

  1. [name]How[/name] popular do you think [name]Aria[/name]/[name]Arya[/name] will become over the next few years? [name]Do[/name] you think it will start to feel trendy?

  2. Does [name]Arya[/name]/[name]Aria[/name] sound too close or cutesy with [name]Nora[/name]? We aren’t worried about clashing styles, but we’d like an outsider’s opinion since both names are 2 syllables, one ending with -a, one with -ia.

Also, if you have any other suggestions for names, we’ll take them. We are trying to avoid anything in the top 100, and we tend to veer toward names with an older/vintage feel. Thank you!

  1. I think that [name]Aria[/name] will continue to be more and more popular, but probably won’t breach the top 50 anytime soon (hopefully!). As for [name]Arya[/name], my prediction is that it won’t get much more popular.

  2. I don’t think they’re too close or cutesy, I like them together. My only concern would be actually saying the two together out loud is kinda tough! “[name]Aria[/name] and [name]Nora[/name]” “[name]Nora[/name] and [name]Aria[/name]” but if that doesn’t bother you- I say go for it!

In the past years [name]Aria[/name]/[name]Arya[/name] have both gotten more popular. I think they will continue to rise but, will not go into the top 50 names.

To show you how many girls in the USA were named [name]Aria[/name]/[name]Arya[/name] in the past years I looked them up for you.

Year 2011 2010 2009 2008
[name]Aria[/name] 1964 898 589 540
[name]Arya[/name] 386 273 236 205

I think [name]Arya[/name] will continue to be less popular than [name]Aria[/name]. The simple names themselves wont seem trendy but, the additives like [name]Arianna[/name] will because ‘anna’ is a trendy ending right now.

I think [name]Aria[/name]/[name]Arya[/name] is cute with [name]Nora[/name] and doesn’t clash.

Some names you might like instead or with [name]Aria[/name]/[name]Arya[/name].

Good [name]Luck[/name]! (:

I like [name]Arya[/name] and [name]Nora[/name] together. They’re similar but not too similar

[name]Aria[/name] is good name and will be popular very soon. It’s a good name to hear and to speak for a girl.

I love [name]Arya[/name]. I think the “y” grounds the name more than the “i”, even though they are pronounced the same. [name]Nora[/name] and [name]Arya[/name] would be a good match as well. As for popularity, lately I have been looking to see how popular it is where I actually live, not just the national list. You could even find exactly how many girls were named that last year. My state doesn’t follow the national trends as closely as I thought and a lot of super popular names (like [name]Isabelle[/name]) aren’t as popular as I thought. If you love it, I say go for it. It’s so cute with [name]Nora[/name]!

Thanks for your input, everyone! We hadn’t decided on the -y- versus -i- spelling, but the character we love spells it with a y, so that’s what we we’d likely use.

[name]Beatrice[/name], [name]Edith[/name], [name]Sonia[/name], and [name]Matilda[/name] are all on our list as well. Great suggestions! Thanks
