I’ve loved the name [name]Ariadne[/name] since meeting someone years ago with this name, except the ‘d’ was silent. So instead of Ar-ee-od-nee, it was pronounced Ar-ee-on-ee. Everywhere I’ve looked the pronunciation of [name]Ariadne[/name] includes the ‘d’. So what I’m wondering is if any of you know a name that is pronounced just [name]Ari[/name]-on-ee, or if the ‘d’ in [name]Ariadne[/name] really is optional?
Not expecting (yet) or anything, just for future reference for my list :).
As a Greek, I’m going to tell you that none of your pronunciations are correct. [name]Don[/name]'t be offended. If you like them, you can use them, but you asked for the proper pronunciation.
The proper way to pronounce this name (in Greek) is air-ee-ad-nee (with the D and with the [name]AIR[/name] sound at the beginning, not AHR and [name]ADD[/name] in the middle, not ODD). The D isn’t optional even if you pronounce it ari-od-nee.
[name]Glad[/name] you asked about this name–I was just about to post about (may later for middle name suggestions). Recently, this is another girl’s name that I have found myself becoming really fond of. I pronounce it and like the way dantea has stated, air-ee-ad-nee.
It was brought to my attention that it can sound like Arachnid, does anyone else think that?
This is exactly how I’ve always pronounced it, and I’m not Greek, so I think you’ll find that’s generally how people pronounce it. I love this name. And actually, I can see the connection to Arachne since Greek names are rarely seen and these are similar in pronunciation (short a sound and ending in “nee”), but I don’t think that throws any negative light on [name]Ariadne[/name]. I wish I could remember what [name]Ariadne[/name] means … now I’m curious and I’ll have to look it up.
