Is this too out there as first name? I know a lot of mythological names are usable but I don’t think either of these are there quite yet.
If they were in the realm of normal which one would you prefer? They sound similar so I would have to use either one or the other.
What names would you pair it with? Either as a first name or a middle name? I rather like [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] [name_m]Aries[/name_m] or Ares [name_m]Gregor[/name_m].
I personally prefer [name_m]Aries[/name_m], because it is a bit gentler in appearance, whereas Ares is quite harsh, but that is just a personal thing. I certainly think it would be usable- it sort of has an [name_m]Eli[/name_m] / [name_u]Aidan[/name_u] / [name_u]Ari[/name_u] feel about it.
Combos:
[name_m]Aries[/name_m] [name_m]Abner[/name_m]
[name_m]Aries[/name_m] [name_m]Boaz[/name_m]
[name_m]Aries[/name_m] [name_m]Bram[/name_m]
[name_m]Aries[/name_m] [name_u]Curran[/name_u]
[name_m]Aries[/name_m] [name_u]Elias[/name_u]
I personally prefer the Ares spelling. The [name_m]Aries[/name_m] spelling is too Zodiac for me. I love the look and sound of Ares. I think Ares is a lot to carry (he was the god of war), but it is totally usable with all the Aarons running around.
Ares [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]
Ares [name_m]Benedict[/name_m]
Ares [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]
Ares [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] (too much?)
Ares [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]
Ares [name_m]Jasper[/name_m]
Ares is kind of short so I’d pick a longer middle.
[name_m]Aries[/name_m] is the zodiac, Ares is the god. I don’t like either for names. Ares is such a violent god! He’s the god of war, bloodshed and violence. If I were forced to choose, I’d go with [name_m]Aries[/name_m] for the ram. [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] [name_m]Aries[/name_m] is nice.
I had the same thought as many of the above. I wouldn’t name a child after the god of war. That seems kind of depressing. [name_m]Aries[/name_m] is okay. There are enough mythological names around that I think it’s useable.
I love mythological names! I don’t like [name_m]Aries[/name_m] as a name, it’s too zodiac. Ares is one of my favorite Greek Gods and a nice name.
Thanks ladies! We were looking for something a bit mythological/astrological for a son.
[name_m]Aries[/name_m] fits in with [name_u]Orion[/name_u] (another name we like) which we like to do the association with stars and space as that’s something we spend quite a lot of time looking at and planning our lives together when we were younger. We liked Ares because OH is big on honoring names and I’ve finally talked him out of using the same name as the person we’d be honoring. His name and one of his best friend’s name are both derived from [name_m]Mars[/name_m] which is the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] equivalent of Ares.
We’re trying to decide which we like better since they sound very similar as well as deciding if we liked the “winner” better as a first name or middle name. If anyone has any other ideas I’d be glad to hear them as most names don’t seem to draw me in anymore like they use to. Other names we like include [name_u]Orion[/name_u], [name_m]Isaac[/name_m], Claymore, [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_m]Bjorn[/name_m], [name_m]Thor[/name_m], [name_m]Gareth[/name_m], and [name_m]Ronan[/name_m] (at least, I like [name_m]Ronan[/name_m], OH only likes its a [name_m]Ronin[/name_m] because to him samurai > little seal).
I find Ares more usable than [name_m]Aries[/name_m]. Something about it being mythological (related to academia) versus zodiac (something that some people find kitschy) gives it more credibility.
I love [name_m]Aries[/name_m] for a name. The other spelling doesn’t look complete to me. God of war thing doesn’t bother me in the least.
I prefer [name_m]Aries[/name_m]. I love that it’s a constellation so it relates to astronomy, and the zodiac connection doesn’t bug me, just like it doesn’t bug me with [name_m]Leo[/name_m]. And although I usually love mythological names, I’m not sure if I’d want to use the name of the god of war (says the girl who’s fave name is [name_f]Pandora[/name_f] :P).
I prefer Ares just because [name_m]Aries[/name_m] is too much zodiac for me. [name_m]Even[/name_m] when someone is named [name_m]Leo[/name_m] as a given name seems too zodiac-y for me. Ares being the God of War doesn’t really bother me at all. Another option: Arietis to represent the stars that make up the constellation. You could use [name_m]Aries[/name_m] or Ares as the nn.
