We have started afresh with our girl list for bub due in [name]August[/name]. Unusually my husband and I have agreed on two new names, and also on combining them… This means the full name would be:
Arrietty [name]Maple[/name] Forman
I really love it, and I am really interested what you guys think of this, especially those also in Australia
We love the nn [name]Etty[/name]/[name]Etta[/name]/Ettymay… Boys name is sorted: [name]Peregrine[/name] [name]Morrissey[/name] Forman.
She would be joining our daughter [name]Iris[/name] [name]Ophelia[/name] and [name]Orrin[/name] [name]Chace[/name] (half brother) and would be our last child.
[name]Maple[/name]: I think [name]Maple[/name] in the middle spot is darling. A while ago I had an obsession with this name as a middle.
Arrietty: I’ve never heard of this name. I’m really curious how did you hear it? What does it mean? And more importantly how do you pronounce it? My guess is [name]Air[/name]-ritty
Arrietty is ‘arry-etty’ and it’s a name from the book ‘The Borrowers’ by Mary Norton (she probably created it out of the name Harriet as there are similarly altered names for other characters too e.g Homily/Emily). I’ve always loved the sound of it. But I think I prefer Arietta.
Thanks for your feedback As renrose said, Arrietty is a character from children’s books ‘The Borrowers’ and its sequels. We considered [name]Arietta[/name] and Ariette scarletrune but we love the sound of the name with the ‘y’ and because of the great character, so we decided it defeated the purpose to try and call her a different version just to call her that anyway…
[name]Maple[/name] is the part that I feel might push it too far… We liked [name]Fern[/name] in the middle but it clashes with Forman… We also like [name]Wren[/name], but it seems a two syllable middle sounds better?
Yeah, I’d look for an alternative to [name]Maple[/name]. Something plainer to pair with Arrietty. Arrietty [name]Jane[/name]? Something like that, anyway.
I loved The Borrowers but I foresee a lifetime of ‘No, not [name]Harriet[/name]…’ on the phone and repeated spelling, mishearing and explaining. The Borrowers aren’t famous enough to have done for Arriety what [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] did for [name]Hermione[/name]. I think [name]Harriet[/name] on the paperwork with Arriety as a nickname would make life much easier for her.
This is probably just me, but when I look at Arrietty, I keep seeing [name]Amity[/name], which I prefer overall, but I like both. Arretty [name]Maple[/name] is cute and whimsical, but for some reason, I can see it being a street name.
Totally true story: I decided a couple years ago that [name]Iris[/name] [name]Ophelia[/name] was the perfect girls name combo. My husband hates both names or it’d be my #1.
I have never seen it anywhere and never thought I would. You made my day!
Oh and I like your new name idea. It’s sweet and unexpected.
I love Arrietty [name]Maple[/name]! Arrietty’s prominent r sound fits perfectly with [name]Iris[/name] and [name]Orrin[/name].
Arrietty [name]Jane[/name] is also really nice, and I like the idea of an Arrietty [name]Isobel[/name], Arrietty [name]Pearl[/name], Arrietty [name]Elke[/name] or Arrietty [name]June[/name]. Something a little more normal or simple for balance. Arrietty Rosebud, Arrietty [name]Clemence[/name] or Arrietty [name]Plum[/name] are quite sweet as well, and follow in [name]Maple[/name]'s footsteps
Oh thanks missusaytch! I have always loved [name]Ophelia[/name], but felt it might be too much as a first once we were pregnant. We really love [name]Iris[/name] with it, and it is going to be hard to beat if this one is a girlie too. I love the idea of a name having a connection to an image, especially in nature e.g. [name]Iris[/name] and [name]Emerald[/name] (love that!), and then something else meaningful.
I really like Arrietty! I knew I’d heard it before…I read The Borrowers when I was younger I like that the name has a story. I’m in Australia btw and where I live it wouldn’t be a problem. I also like it with [name]Maple[/name] or [name]Maeve[/name]. Good [name]Luck[/name]
