Artsy, Bohemian names for girls

Hello berries,

We just found out that we are pregnant with our first baby. I have been a name nerd for a decade and I suggested hundreds of names to my husband. It seems that we just can’t find the right one.

We love the name [name_f]Olive[/name_f], but it makes me think of the fruit more than anything else (I don’t like the taste of olives). People around us told me it was a bad idea and that she would get teased a lot. I’m getting to the point where I’m scared to say we like [name_f]Olive[/name_f] when people ask us what names we are considering for a girl. We get a lot of “pickles” or “[name_f]Olive[/name_f] Oyl”. My family already told me that they would use [name_f]Liv[/name_f] and not [name_f]Olive[/name_f]. Once again, I love the name, but I don’t want to feel uncomfortable when I call my hypothetical daughter by her actual name outside. [name_f]Olive[/name_f] has never been popular in my country and that’s maybe way people react this way. Other names we “like” include [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_f]Boheme[/name_f] and [name_f]Autumn[/name_f], but [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] is super common and [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] has to be a middle name. We don’t know how to feel about [name_f]Boheme[/name_f] yet. [name_f]Esme[/name_f] is also an option. My husband is not too keen on it but he likes the nicknames Ezzie, [name_f]Izzie[/name_f] or [name_f]Em[/name_f].

He also suggested [name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Cleo[/name_f], [name_f]Astoria[/name_f], [name_u]Rory[/name_u], [name_u]Skye[/name_u], [name_f]Lilith[/name_f], [name_f]Terra[/name_f], [name_f]Zara[/name_f], [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], [name_u]Genesis[/name_u] or [name_u]Emery[/name_u]. I kind of like [name_f]Ada[/name_f] and [name_u]Emery[/name_u]. [name_u]Emery[/name_u] [name_u]Poet[/name_u] was stuck in my mind the past few days.

I think we like artsy, nature, spunky, bohemian names. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any advice or more suggestions for us?

Thank you!

My advice is if you love [name_f]Olive[/name_f], use [name_f]Olive[/name_f]. You’d be surprised how quickly people come around in a name once it is on a person they love. And it’s been my experience that people who say “well I’ll just call them ___” do so only for a short time. Then they realize they sound like fools and the child doesn’t even identify with the name they call them by and they stop.

[name_f]Cosette[/name_f]/ [name_f]Coco[/name_f]

Congratulations and good luck!

I would drop [name_f]Olive[/name_f]. It sounds like you don’t really love it

[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] as middle name or other ideas:
[name_f]Louise[/name_f] [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]
[name_f]Gwen[/name_f] [name_f]Leilani[/name_f]
[name_f]Juliet[/name_f] [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]
[name_f]Kerensa[/name_f] [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]
[name_f]Luciana[/name_f] [name_m]Quest[/name_m]
[name_f]Mariella[/name_f] [name_f]Juni[/name_f]
[name_f]Junia[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]

I would also drop [name_f]Boheme[/name_f], and I like sound of [name_u]Emery[/name_u] [name_u]Poet[/name_u]. I think [name_u]Emery[/name_u] [name_f]Poem[/name_f] would be sweeter, also [name_f]Liv[/name_f] is sweet option.

I love Olive! I have a sibset in our play group sister Olive & Esther “Etsy” super cute!

I really like Emery Poet too!

Your husband has some great suggestions my favorite are: Cleo, Aurora “Rory” , Lilith

I like the suggestion of [name_f]Octavia[/name_f]. What about [name_f]Odette[/name_f]? [name_f]October[/name_f] has been another name on the rise, nn [name_u]Tobi[/name_u].

Another nn for [name_f]Esme[/name_f]/[name_f]Esmae[/name_f] could be [name_f]Mae[/name_f]? Which I think is very boho, yet classic.

Congratulations! I’ve always really admired your style.

I love [name_f]Olive[/name_f] but it sounds like you have a fair few reservations about using it, and I think you need to be fully on board with a “love it or hate it” name, so that any negative reactions don’t hit a nerve and make you doubt your choice.

I also really like [name_f]Autumn[/name_f], [name_f]Esme[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] and [name_f]Zara[/name_f] from your list, but again if none are clicking with you then perhaps you still haven’t found “the one”.

The best advice I can give u is do NOT share your names w average ppl who have totally dif taste than u. [name_f]Olive[/name_f] is very popular where i live and it’s also close to uber pop [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]. For that reason I would not use it. If ppl ask what names u like give them a decoy name, a name u like but aren’t gonna use. I have daughters w artsy names.
My middle daughter is named [name_f]Boheme[/name_f] we call her [name_u]Bo[/name_u] sometimes ppl lover her name and it’s easy to say [name_u]Bo[/name_u]-em. When we traveled to [name_f]France[/name_f] ppl also loved her name. Other names I can suggest
[name_f]Olympia[/name_f]
[name_u]Dove[/name_u]
[name_u]Matisse[/name_u]
[name_f]Indie[/name_f]/indigo
[name_f]Cosima[/name_f]

In the PNW of [name_u]America[/name_u], I know several Olives, and they are all sweet and lovely little girls!

@llbaby22
Thank you for your advice and for sharing your experience! I know people tend to talk behind others’ backs, and I’m afraid that my acquaintances would badmouth about my children’s names.
From your list, I like [name_f]Fern[/name_f], [name_f]Willow[/name_f], [name_f]Tessa[/name_f], [name_f]Coco[/name_f] and [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]. My husband doesn’t like any, but he likes [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] (which I think is too common for me).

@Sorceress
Thanks! [name_f]Olive[/name_f] is our best option for now. [name_f]Liv[/name_f] has been in my list since 2009, so I could still use this until I feel more comfortable with [name_f]Olive[/name_f].
From your suggestions, I like [name_f]Louise[/name_f] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f], but they are super popular in my country (top 10). I love [name_f]Junie[/name_f] and I will suggest it to my husband. It’s the first time I see [name_f]Junia[/name_f], I have to let it simmer. Also, I really like [name_f]Nimue[/name_f] from your signature.

@[name_m]Wilkie[/name_m]
Thank you! Etsy is absolutely adorable. [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] is a bit mouthful for me (english is not my first language). I have a hard time to pronounce it. From your list I like:
[name_f]Fern[/name_f], [name_f]Gemma[/name_f], [name_f]Farrah[/name_f], [name_u]Darcy[/name_u], [name_f]Etta[/name_f], [name_f]Delilah[/name_f], [name_f]Indie[/name_f], [name_f]Cadence[/name_f], [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], [name_f]Colette[/name_f], [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], [name_f]Pippa[/name_f], [name_u]Calypso[/name_u], [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. But I know for a fact that my other half doesn’t, because I suggested most of these names a few days ago. I will try [name_f]Gemma[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Kaia[/name_f], [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], [name_u]Sage[/name_u], [name_f]Elowen[/name_f], [name_f]Adele[/name_f] (my great grandmother), [name_f]Freya[/name_f], [name_u]Juniper[/name_u], [name_u]Billie[/name_u], [name_f]Celeste[/name_f], [name_f]Leonie[/name_f] (also my great grandmother), [name_f]Faye[/name_f], [name_f]Isadora[/name_f], [name_f]Octavia[/name_f], [name_f]Willa[/name_f], [name_f]Mina[/name_f] and [name_f]Theodora[/name_f]. I know my husband likes [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Nell[/name_f], [name_u]Sage[/name_u] and [name_f]Freya[/name_f], and in the past he talked about [name_f]Mina[/name_f], [name_u]River[/name_u], [name_f]Odessa[/name_f] (his favorite band). I also know that he doesn’t like [name_u]Juniper[/name_u], [name_f]Theodora[/name_f], [name_f]Octavia[/name_f], [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] and [name_u]Billie[/name_u] because I have been “pushing” for these names lately, and he kept saying no. It’s the first time I see [name_u]Salem[/name_u] for a girl and I kind of like it. I will suggest [name_u]Salem[/name_u] along [name_f]Elowen[/name_f], [name_f]Faye[/name_f], [name_f]Adele[/name_f], [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] and [name_f]Imogen[/name_f]. I’m adding [name_u]Sage[/name_u] in the list!

@river_dweller
I’m not a fan of [name_f]Odette[/name_f], sorry. [name_f]October[/name_f] is cute but I don’t have any tied connexion to this month. We both like the suggestion of [name_f]Mae[/name_f], thank you! Also, my husband likes [name_m]Clarke[/name_m] from your signature.

@[name_f]Katinka[/name_f]
Awh, thank you so much! I also admire your style
If I see [name_f]Esme[/name_f] or [name_f]Olive[/name_f] among other names, they are definitely “clicking”. Like, when my eyes come across [name_f]Olive[/name_f] or [name_f]Esme[/name_f] in a list, my heart beats faster. I think they are so pretty… and I don’t know why I have doubts.

I love [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. I actually have [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] in my list. I guess my husband feels undecided about these names, because one day it’s*“yes”, the other day it’s “no”. I tried [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] and [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] already. I might consider [name_u]Indigo[/name_u] as a middle name, but it has my preference on a boy.

[name_f]Maxine[/name_f] is actually in our list. So is Ysée. I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] Ysée, but every time I ask what people think about it, I get comments saying that the name is not wearable in an english speaking country (because it’s too close to “easy”). Also, I’m not sure people would know how to pronounce it or spell it. That’s the only reason why it’s not in the top of our list right now. Because we both like it! We thought about Yselle or Isildée nn Ysée. But it just doesn’t feel right. Most of the french names we like seem to be difficult to pronounce in english (Esmérance, Isildée). That’s why we are leaning towards something that’s more international.

I will suggest [name_f]Ismay[/name_f], [name_f]Adele[/name_f] and [name_f]Emme[/name_f]. Also, [name_f]Kahlo[/name_f] is a great idea. I’m not a fan of the name, but I definitely see the appeal.

@Merylp: I love you daughter’s name. I’m not surprised people like it in [name_f]France[/name_f]. I like [name_u]Indigo[/name_u] and [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] from your suggestions.

@Daniemc: Thanks!
I will suggest [name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_f]Autumn[/name_f], [name_f]Saskia[/name_f] [name_f]Juno[/name_f] and [name_f]Reverie[/name_f] (as a middle name only, it’s sadly not useable in my country). I love [name_u]Shelby[/name_u] [name_f]Boheme[/name_f] as a combo, the names flow really well together, but I’m not a fan of the name [name_u]Shelby[/name_u] by itself.

@Withinreason: Thank you for sharing this. There has been only 650 Olives since 1900 in my country, it’s very rare. [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] is popular though. That’s why I don’t understand people’s reactions. They are literally the same names for me.

You should use [name_f]Olive[/name_f]! It’s such a lovely name!

I think you should use [name_f]Olive[/name_f]; it’s a lovely name, and you seem to adore it! (Coincidentally, I had a friend called [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] who sometimes went by [name_f]Olive[/name_f], and no-one batted an eyelid.)

If you decide not to use [name_f]Olive[/name_f], what about:

Apologies if this has been suggested already, but perhaps [name_f]Livia[/name_f]? You could use the nickname [name_f]Liv[/name_f], or a cute nickname could be [name_f]Olive[/name_f].

@josephinedgnall, thank you! I like [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] and [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] but my husband told me “and why not scooby-doo?” rolling my eyes

@Jessicalucy, I prefer [name_f]Boheme[/name_f] over [name_f]Bohemia[/name_f], sorry.

@bobcat, I don’t like [name_f]Livia[/name_f], sorry. Except from [name_f]Liv[/name_f], I don’t think I like any other variant of the name [name_f]Olive[/name_f].

I understand your hesitance with [name_f]Olive[/name_f], especially if your family has expressed their intention to use a nickname. Perhaps you could use it as a middle name?

As for artsy, bohemian, and punk-y names, I think [name_f]Rumi[/name_f], [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f], [name_f]Clover[/name_f], [name_f]Birdie[/name_f], [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], [name_u]Lennon[/name_u], [name_f]Maisie[/name_f], [name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_u]Skye[/name_u], [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f], [name_f]Adele[/name_f], [name_f]Delilah[/name_f], [name_f]Bea[/name_f], [name_f]Elodie[/name_f], [name_u]Ever[/name_u], [name_f]Fawn[/name_f], [name_f]Imogen[/name_f].

For combinations with [name_f]Olive[/name_f], I like,

[name_f]Delilah[/name_f] [name_f]Olive[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f] [name_f]Olive[/name_f]
