I love the names [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] and [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f], but I’m not sure if they would be good to use in real life. What are your opinions on these names? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think they are too much? [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t be afraid to be honest!
I really don’t like either one, sorry. [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] is very masculine to me. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though I know it’s a girls name, I can’t help thinking it’s a boys. [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] I’m inclined to pronounce as [name_u]Owen[/name_u], though I read that it’s Ay-oh-wen. I’d like to suggest [name_f]Bronwen[/name_f], [name_f]Rowena[/name_f], & [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] to you as alternatives.
These are two of my favorite names!! I absolutely love [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] and [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f]. I personally wouldn’t hesitate to use either one. My OH met an [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] a few weeks ago actually and he thought it was awesome to hear it in real life. He knows how much I love it so he asked the woman about it and she said she loved her name
I really like [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] and [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f]! I think they’re usable individually, but be prepared for people bringing up the [name_m]Lord[/name_m] of the Rings connection.
I feel [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] is so masculine sounding that it actually “belongs” on a boys’ list. I don’t really care for either as I personally prefer more feminine names for girls. They are much too close to use as sibling names.
I like them individually. They’re a little out there for my personal taste, but I think they are nice names. I agree that putting them together is way too LOTR
[name_m]Just[/name_m] by sound alone, I don’t think they’re “too” close, but the LOTR connection is very evident. If you’re a huge LOTR fan, maybe they’re usable as sibling names, but if not, you’ll quickly become frustrated with people constantly asking about the connection.
Is it teasable? I don’t know if their peers would tease them on the playground, but actually in my experience ADULTS like to make jokes about this sort of thing. Many of them think they’re being funny, because surely nobody has ever made the same joke about your name. (Sorry about that. Rant over.)
If not used as sibling names, I think they’re unquestionably usable. (Then again, I really like LOTR!)
[name_f]Arwen[/name_f] and [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] are all girl to me. Names ending in “wen” are inherently feminine to me most of the time, and “wyn” endings are masculine, but name a famous male [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f]. Most people will only know the [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] from LOTR.
I love both names!
I love [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] but I’m not so keen on [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] — I don’t love the look of it and it feels very LOTR, where [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] doesn’t quite so much because of its closeness to [name_f]Anwen[/name_f].
I know an Aelfwyn (ELF-win), if you like that? Or [name_f]Olwen[/name_f]? [name_f]Aerin[/name_f]?
I love [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] & [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f]! I’m a huge lotr fan though. I definitely think they’re usable, but you’ll definitely get a lot of lotr comments.
if you don’t mind that though, I think they’re very pretty names, and are connected to such strong, beautiful characters.
(I’m not sure if I’m brave enough to use either, so I’ve settled on the more subtle [name_f]Elanor[/name_f]! I’d looove to meet an [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] or [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] though.)
I think both [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] and [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] are lovely, however I’d hesitate to use them together (in the same way I wouldn’t use [name_m]Harry[/name_m] and [name_m]Ronald[/name_m] or [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and [name_f]Leia[/name_f]). Of the two I think I would go for [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] because it fits in better with general style at the moment and is more likely to be pronounced correctly - I also love [name_f]Anwen[/name_f] which is very similar but not LOTR.
I definitely don’t find [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] masculine in sound, at least no more so than [name_f]Bronwen[/name_f], which I think is far less pretty! I also love the suggestion of [name_f]Elanor[/name_f] which has a lovely LOTR connection but is less obvious - [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] and [name_f]Elanor[/name_f] would also be a bit more subtle as a pair than [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] and [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f].
This is exactly what I thought… both of these names scream Tolkien fan to me. Like to a weird point, if one were to end up naming their kids this. They’re pretty names, but I dunno.
I agree with @maerad that it’d be weird to use them together, like [name_m]Luke[/name_m] & [name_f]Leia[/name_f]. But I’d go so far as to say the names are odd enough that it’d be weird to use either one. It’d be like naming a kid Darth. Or Vader… it’s just impossible to dissociate the name from the character. [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and even [name_f]Leia[/name_f] are regular enough names, but to me [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] and [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] would be like naming a kid [name_m]Frodo[/name_m] or Sméagol or Legolas or Gimli or Gandalf or any one of the other weird LOTR names. You might like the sound, but that doesn’t dissociate it from LOTR. Although, it’s not like people aren’t doing it, I mean [name_m]Kylo[/name_m] charted last year, so…
I mean… I guess if you’re okay with the kid being associated with that forever… but I’m not sure how fair that is to the kid? I dunno. It’s too much for me and most people, I’d think. There are lots of pretty Welsh names out there.
I love them both! But I think they are hard to wear in real life. They’re very connected to LOTR so I would personally only ever use them as middle names, if at all. I personally find [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] to be absolutely gorgeous aesthetically, and I love the character as well. Because I’ve always been familiar with the films, I would never have an issue pronouncing it at all. But for me, I think they will remain in the guilty pleasure, “would never use in real life” category.
Regardless, I would love to meet a real life [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] or [name_f]Arwen[/name_f], and I would support your choice to use either one! [name_m]Just[/name_m] be prepared to hear a lot of LOTR references :).
