🧶 Asking about Agnes

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! I recently made a bandwagon post for ā€œwhat names do you see for my childā€ and I was really surprised by how many people replied with [name_f]Agnes[/name_f].

I do have [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] on my list (probably my short list); she really has a lot of things going for her. Some of my favorite things about [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] are how she feels feminine but not frilly, is uncommon with an intuitive spelling/pronunciation. There’s an [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] in my family tree, she works in different languages/cultures, I’ve floated [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] past a few people in my life and they’ve either liked it or at least didn’t actively dislike it.

What do you think of [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]?
I am totally fine with clunky names (love them actually). But I can’t quite get a read for [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] IRL - is it tease-worthy or eyebrow raising?

How do you view [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]?
What do you think an [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] would be like? [name_m]Or[/name_m] the [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] aesthetic, whatever that means for you? For reference, the [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] in my head is a little bit like American [name_f]Girl[/name_f] [name_m]Doll[/name_m] [name_f]Molly[/name_f] with dark hair cut in bangs, tortoiseshell glasses, witty quips.

What middle name would you pick for [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]?
I’ve had [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] on my list and currently have [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_f]Liora[/name_f] in my UC. Neither feel quite right (Agnes [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] is a bit too aesthetic/dark academia to the point it doesn’t feel as much like a ā€œreal name,ā€ and [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_f]Liora[/name_f] seems mismatched even for my eclectic style). I’m a little bit trying to avoid [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] reading too ā€œprimā€ - I’d rather the combo lean retro, hipster, or powerful than proper or lacey.

Who are Agnes’s siblings?
Lately I’ve been enjoying those clunky grandparent names (some might even describe them as ugly lol). I have a dog named [name_m]Walter[/name_m] and the name [name_m]Grover[/name_m] is on my list - I feel like that says it all. But [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] also works with some shorter, cozy, international favorites like [name_m]Bram[/name_m]. The only hard Nos I see are [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and [name_f]Margo[/name_f] because of Despicable Me.

Thank you so much in advance! I feel a bit silly saying ā€œconvince me on this name that I already have on my listā€ but I’m hoping to take it to the next level here

[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is one of those names that I am so hot and cold with! Depending on my mood, she’s either a clunky, dated name, or a cuddly, charming, vintage darling that I’d be glad to see make a comeback.

How do you view [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]?
To me, [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is a sweet, quirky girl, always buried in chunky sweaters and baking cookies for her loved ones. She’s a bit of a daydreamer, always doodling in the back pages of old books.

Big fan! It’s in my personal top 15/20 for girls (depending on the day). I feel like it has potential for reading in grade school, but depending on name trends where you are, it might not stand out enough for that. Not a big enough deterrent for me personally

How do you view Agnes?
Quirky chic London UK vibes w some French and German vibes mixed in. It actually has a decently strong modern vibe to it for me w just the right amount of clink :kissing_heart: big chunky red knit cardigan w cute little white round sunnies and a striped dress

I really like it! It’s not my personal style, but it’s a name I like for others a lot. I don’t really see anything tease-worthy about her. I know that in theory she’s a bit clunky and grandma, but she doesn’t feel too much like it. Sound-wise she reminds me of names like [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Frances[/name_f], both of which feel fashionable to me in different ways. And I don’t remember seeing any negative/mocking reactions from parents to the little girl named [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] when the movie Despicable Me first came out!

How do you view [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]?
Sweet, cosy, a bit [name_f]British[/name_f]! Straight dark brown hair in bangs, someone who wears dresses but not very frilly ones, sleek and tailored with an quiet femininity. As a younger child, artistic and expressive!

Clunky and cosy at the same time. I’ve met a few Agathas and seen one little (real life) Agnes on TV and it really suited her, so I can imagine it! I don’t think it’s anymore eyebrow raising that other ā€˜old-fashioned’ names coming back into style (Olive, Margot, Edith, Theodora etc)

I think of Agnes from David Copperfield ( calm and patient but also knows her own mind), Agnes Grey from Anne Bronte’s book (another calm and quiet presence, but independent, wanting to learn, and resilient), Agnes ā€œAngusā€ from Demon Copperhead (a strong presence but kind too), and Agnes from Hamnet (loving, strong, in tune with the natural world).

In trying to get that balance, I’d consider: Agnes Rowan, Agnes Luella, Agnes Colette, Agnes Camila, Agnes Camille, Agnes Mabel, Agnes Lyra, Agnes Matilda, Agnes Ruby, Agnes Coralie

Agnes and…

Tilda - Rupert - Robin - Una - Twyla - Maren - Gilbert - Clancy - Viola - Mabel - Thelma - Vita - Sloan - Wilfred - Otto - Flora - Dorothy - Solomon - Ruth - Ernest / Ernie

[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] feels quiet and shy to me. Distinctly vintage - I would be pleasantly surprised to meet a young [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]. I don’t think it would lead to teasing.

[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_f]June[/name_f], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_f]Wren[/name_f]?

I really like [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] with [name_m]Bram[/name_m]. [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] and [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]?

I think [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is a lovely name! It may seem a bit dated to some people, but old-fashioned names are coming back into style, so I think it would fit right in! I know a little [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] and another little girl with the middle name [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], and I think it’s such a sweet, feminine name for a little girl without being overly frilly/trendy. It can also fit an adult well.
For a middle name maybe: [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_m]Emerson[/name_m], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_f]Mila[/name_f], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_f]Everleigh[/name_f], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_f]Lydia[/name_f], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_f]Audrey[/name_f], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_f]Gabriella[/name_f]

Sibling names:
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Frances[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]
[name_f]Anna[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f]
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Evelyn[/name_f]

(a sibset with [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] and any of these names would be the cutest thing ever!) This is one of my favorite styles of names.

I absolutely adore Agnes, she’s been my top name for over 5 years! She’s clunky, sweet, and wearable (one name that truly works for any age, and I don’t see any teasing potential. Yes, she’s dusty and vintage, but I think people are OK with that!)

I first heard the name in David Copperfield- Agnes Wickfield was my favourite character! She was calm, loving, caring, and strong- characteristics that attached themselves to the name. I also think of Agnes from Hamnet, which adds a down-to-earth, herbal, romantic, Shakespearean feel. Ultimately, I think of Aggie Morton from the kids detective series, who is quirky, quipy, bold, mischievous, curious, and has the coolest ā€œmessy-victorianā€ clothing style. A mixture of those traits is what I picture an Agnes to be like.

Imagery wise, I have a pretty versatile image. Long, smooth, dark brown hair and glasses? Sure! Red hair and freckles? Sure! Messy dirty blonde curls and brown eyes? Sure! This is part of the reason I love Agnes- she can be worn on anyone.
She fits any aesthetic, and changes depending on my mood. If I want to lean into the meaning of ā€œlambā€, she’s :womans_hat::sheep::herb::kite:! In autumn she feels like :fallen_leaf::sunflower::yarn::corn:.
A spunky Agnes? :rainbow::bug::beverage_box::books:
A shyer Agnes? :coffee::mag_right::goggles::mantelpiece_clock:

She can fit anyone and anything!

I’ve been stuck on middles for so long, so I understand your problem. Agnes Rowena is stunning, but I agree, very autumnal/dark academia. I personally think Agnes Liora doesn’t work too well as she does feel quite mismatched.
At the moment my combo Is Agnes Thora, and for you I might suggest something like:

Summary

Hero
Holiday
Enola
Petra
Frida
Roberta
Bronte
Quimby
Bryony
Minttu
Pipaluk
Opal
Cleo
Jasper

I love Grover and Bram with Agnes! I could also see anything from Agnes & Blythe to Agnes & Helen, to Agnes & Tilda! She fits with anything!

What do you think of [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]?
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is one of my big ā€œI like it for someone else’s babyā€ names. Like, I’d be thrilled to meet a little [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]. It is kind of a quintessential old lady name, but those are getting more and more stylish. I think [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is at the cutting edge of that trend. It’s too bold to get really trendy, but I think [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] will only become more of a pleasant surprise amongst the Beatrice’s and Lily’s of the past decade. I will say my heart is a little broken personally because I LOVE the way [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is pronounced in [name_f]French[/name_f] (ahn-YEZ) but alas, that is not the [name_f]English[/name_f] pronunciation.

How do you view [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]?
I picture an [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] being quiet and gentle, very clever and a bit dreamy. She speaks up when she needs to, but mostly spends her time walking through the trees or enjoying a good book.

What middle name would you pick for [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]?
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_f]Liora[/name_f] is really nice. I like the idea of a nature name, like [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_f]Lark[/name_f] or [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_f]Willow[/name_f]. Maybe something with strong sounds, like [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_f]Juno[/name_f] or [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] Terezi.

Who are Agnes’s siblings?
If I was going to suggest siblings for [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], my first thoughts would be [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f], [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], [name_f]Hildy[/name_f], or [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] for a sister and [name_m]Wilbur[/name_m], [name_m]Emmett[/name_m], or Hugh/Hugo for a brother.

I really like [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]. With such a wide variety of names in use and so many other clunky names in particular coming back into style I don’t think [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] would stick out as weird to her classmates or be teased at all.

[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] definitely has sassy/witty vibes to me. Autumnal, almost more cottagecore than dark academia but maybe a bit of both.

[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] maybe? Similar to [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] but more towards the quirky side instead of the dark academia. I think [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] is gorgeous but I totally get feeling like the name is a bit too vibey, I’ve got some combos like that.

[name_f]Louise[/name_f]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Francine[/name_f]
