What’s your take on Aslan? What would you pair with it?
Note: I like the literary reference so, no, that isn’t a turn off for me.

For me, the literary reference makes it too much. I know you say it doesn’t bother you, but in the chronicles of narnia Aslan is the christian god, and its because of that I wouldn’t use it. I also don’t think its a very nice name anyway, sorry.
@islandmoon, that’s fine you don’t have to like it! Like I said in my original post, the literary reference really doesn’t bother me. Aslan was a name before The Chronicles of [name_f]Narnia[/name_f], and I don’t really see any conflict in using it because of who the character is supposed to represent.
I’m not a fan.
I’m not a fan, sorry I don’t think names should start with As.
I love it. The literary reference made me love it even more.
Aslan [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] (although that doubles the lion reference!)
Aslan [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m]
Aslan [name_m]Solomon[/name_m]
Aslan [name_m]Lysander[/name_m]
Aslan [name_m]Samuel[/name_m]
Aslan [name_m]Miles[/name_m]
Aslan [name_m]Cassius[/name_m]
I can understand not liking the name Aslan, but WUT? Thousands of years of history includes names like Aslan, [name_u]Asa[/name_u], [name_f]Astrid[/name_f], [name_m]Aston[/name_m], [name_m]Asher[/name_m], Asger, [name_u]Aspen[/name_u], [name_f]Asma[/name_f], [name_f]Astoria[/name_f], [name_f]Aster[/name_f], etc. and you’re going to discount all of that because it might possibly share a similar sound to the word ‘ass?’ That’s crazy talk.
I’ve met quite a few Turkish men named Arslan, Arsalan, and even one named Azlan. I think it’s a strong name, but strongly (and perhaps inextricably) tied to either Turkish culture or the [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] series. The latter association is pretty complicated given the problematic religious (and, in later books, explicitly racist) content of the series. That said, Aslan has a great sound.
I think it’s a legitimate concern for teasing. Obviously the possibility of teasing shouldn’t entirely dictate a name choice, but I don’t think it’s crazy to take it into consideration, especially when it’s obvious like it is with As- names. [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] is a perfectly reasonable name for a person, but The Office showed that it’s very easy to take a name like that and make it silly (even by accident). You may determine that it’s not enough for you to ditch the name, and that’s fine, but I think it is important to consider.
Okay, no, this thread is not turning into the “using Astrid is cruel” thread. This can be and has been talked about at length on allll naming forums and the consensus is that it’s ridiculous to throw out perfectly lovely names because it starts with As-.
[name_m]Fox[/name_m], [name_m]Tucker[/name_m], [name_m]Cassius[/name_m], are all more explicit sounding/spelling and more popular than Aslan, which is pronounced “AZ-lyn”
I’m quite fond Aslan as a name. I don’t really think of the book series.
I like Aslan, but it reminds me of [name_f]Reza[/name_f] Aslan. Not bad, just a pop culture connection. It’s a fine name.
Clearly that’s not the consensus, since several people have expressed other opinions.
With all due respect I don’t understand why you’re asking for opinions if you’re going to disregard the position of anyone who dislikes the name for any reason.
Looove Aslan, has it on my signature. For me Aslan is not connected to [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] since I am Turkish and it is just a normal name in my country. Aslan has a good meaning, lion, also the name given to Alp Aslan for his grand victories and how he opened a new page in our history. If Aslan is too [name_f]Narnia[/name_f], there is still Arslan as a spelling or maybe even Alpaslan/Alparslan as a joint name.
I love it, especially considering the lion.
I love Aslan!
major eyeroll Yes, the general agreement throughout the world is that names that start with As- are perfectly fine to use. If you think otherwise because a few prudes dislike the idea that their child might be called Ass on the playground then that’s your deal.
I didn’t realize these threads meant someone can dislike the name you’re asking about for absolutely any reason and you aren’t permitted to disagree. Am I reading your remark correctly? So someone can jump on and say they hate the name Aslan because it reminds them of their third grade teacher who read The Chronicles of [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] with a lisp, and I shouldn’t disregard that? Have you read any of my replies? I’m A-OK with someone mentioning that they don’t like the sound, or they personally dislike the connection, or they think the name is old-fashioned. I didn’t disregard any of that and I appreciate their thoughts. However, someone stating they “don’t think names should start with As-” is an entirely different discussion.
At least one of the previous posters said that it’s only something to be considered and not necessarily disqualifying. I’ve read the entire thread and there hasn’t been a single time where you have taken someone’s reason for disliking the name into consideration. Whenever you have commented on a negative opinion, you’ve dismissed it as ignorant or ridiculous. And that’s fine, you don’t have to respect the opinions of others, it just doesn’t make a lot of sense to ask for them.
Perhaps you should have started a thread asking for positive feedback about the name as that’s clearly what you’re looking for.
@daisy451, I responded to ONE negative remark. ONE. “I don’t think names should start with As-” and then someone else who joined in to share why [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] could cause teasing which I shut down because that’s irrelevant to Aslan, not a concern of mine, and that topic had been discussed ad nauseam within the week on another thread which I linked to.
Meanwhile…
“I also don’t think its a very nice name anyway, sorry.”
“I’m not a fan.”
“but strongly (and perhaps inextricably) tied to either Turkish culture or the [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] series. The latter association is pretty complicated given the problematic religious (and, in later books, explicitly racist) content of the series.”
" So it just feels very, very old to me."
^^^ All answered my original question “What’s your take on ASLAN?” I didn’t comment on their negative opinions or write them off as ignorant or ridiculous. Not sure how you can say that clearly I was looking for positive feedback when I literally questioned one person’s opinion of ALL As- names.
Not that I really need to defend myself because the bottom line is that yes, I think the opinion of thinking all names that start with As- should never be used and thrown from history because of ~bullies~ is ignorant and ridiculous. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
