What do you think of the name [name_u]Aster[/name_u]?
I’ve just rediscovered it and realized I really like the look/sound.
I prefer it on a boy because it fits the style I like for boy name (soft, on the feminine side, vowel beginning, etc). What do you think? I know a few male Asters but is it too feminine to be unisex?
Potential for a rude nickname/teasing? I know the [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] Office association. A problem?
Nicknames that aren’t [name_u]Terry[/name_u] - [name_u]Ace[/name_u], Azie, [name_u]Ari[/name_u], any other suggestions?
Cannot think of any nicknames other than the obvious rude one. Surprised that you know a few as I have never met anyone by this name. I could see this as a nice middle name.
I know one female and one male [name_u]Aster[/name_u] and know of two more, all are in non-English speaking countries so the rude nickname isn’t a problem there
LOVE [name_u]Aster[/name_u] for both genders, but have a hard time seeing this spelling for a boy. I’d use [name_u]Astor[/name_u] because it looks more similar to [name_m]Aston[/name_m] which is more clearly masc imo.
I am hesitant about the rude nickname and teasing, which is why I’m saving it for the middle spot. However, [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] and [name_u]Aspen[/name_u] have the same problem but are common enough anyway.
I think it’s perfectly unisex, a floral association and starry meaning, but with an un-frilly spelling. Personally I dislike Astor because I just associate it with the wealthy Astor family whereas Aster has these beautiful nature meanings.
It’s probably inevitable there will be some kids that think names starting as- are hilarious. In the U.K. I think people would probably get called ‘Asda’ after the supermarket
How about Attie, Ash, Asa, Star? I like Taz or Azie as well.
Overall I really like it but would probably use as a mn
I see [name_u]Aster[/name_u] as completely unisex, leaning more towards a soft name for boys. Oddly though, I’ve only known of 1 [name_u]Aster[/name_u] - an Eritrean woman.
Kids can be cruel and if they want to tease someone, they will find something to tease about. Don’t let a potential rude nickname get in the way of a name you love! [name_m]Aston[/name_m], [name_u]Asa[/name_u] and [name_u]Aspen[/name_u] would have the same issue but their popularity hasn’t been affected.
I think it works equally well on any gender, but the first syllable sounds so prominent when I say the name. This would bother me enough not to use it.
I like the idea of [name_f]Star[/name_f] as a nickname.
[name_u]Aster[/name_u] is cool and interesting. I think it works on any gendee.
i did read an article where someone did change their son’s name from [name_u]Aster[/name_u] to something popular due to getting weird looks and teasing potential. (Aster → ass) Still, [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] is well in use so [name_u]Aster[/name_u] could work. Maybe it would be hard for a teenaged boy though?
[name_u]Ari[/name_u] is nice Aster… [name_f]Star[/name_f], [name_u]Ara[/name_u], [name_m]Art[/name_m], [name_u]Artie[/name_u]?
Personally, I would avoid any name that starts with the sound As- because of the teasing potential. I know that any name can lead to teasing, but some names have more obvious teasing potential than others and I would not be comfortable giving my child such a name. This is just my personal opinion and I’m aware that not everyone is going to feel this way.
I don’t think [name_u]Aster[/name_u] is a name that comes with built-in nickname options. There just aren’t many sounds that you can work with. [name_f]My[/name_f] suggestion would be to choose a nickname that’s unrelated to the actual name - like [name_f]Bunny[/name_f] or [name_m]Buddy[/name_m] etc.
