I love the name [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] for a girl. Nn [name_u]Story[/name_u] is pretty, and the small coastal town is near where my husband and I met. BUT-the first syllable. Is it not realistic? I don’t want to saddle our kiddo with ass as a first name. I pronounce it softer “ah-storia” but it could be pronounced the way I don’t want. What are your HONEST thoughts? Thank you!
I this it’s useable. Other names like [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] and [name_u]Aster[/name_u] are used commonly enough. I mean will somebody at some point in their life point that out? Probably. But I don’t think it will be a big deal. It also doesn’t really sound like that word, like someone has to go out of their way to say it in a manner that stresses the name incorrectly to make it sound like that word.
Sort of similar, but I had a friend growing up whose last name was Butts. Around 4th grade and again in 7th there were a few kids who made comments but the truth is it’s really only funny the first time it gets pointed out and then there really isn’t much else to say? Not really the sort of teasing that sticks.
I don’t think you need to worry about it. Because the middle syllables take the stress in this name, I imagine most people when they say this name don’t stop the first syllable after the as-, they stop it after the initial ah- or uh- sound, so you’re hearing ah-sto-ri-a instead of ass-to-ri-a, if that makes sense. It’s different than [name_f]Astrid[/name_f], where the first syllable is stressed, so you actually get an “ass” sound at the beginning. At least in my accent you do. haha
Astoria is beautiful! I say the first syllable more like “uh” so it doesn’t sound like “ass” at all. More like uh-STOR-ee-uh.
I think it’s completely usable.
I pronounce it uh-store-ree-uh so the ‘ass’ sound doesnt really bother me. [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] is popular enough that I think you could use it. It’s a pretty and bold name
Useable! In Spanish it’s pronounced more with the “Ahh” and since it will be said that way by family it’ll be easier to avoid it compared to [name_f]Astrid[/name_f]! I personally have the name on the list it’s beautiful and surprisingly universal, for me the pros outweigh the cons!
I never saw the “a*s” in it.
It’s only unusable for me in that it’s a neighborhood nearby.
Astrid makes the same sound as ass to me, [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] is more like the first A in [name_u]America[/name_u] (more of “uh-store-ee-uh) if that makes sense
I like the connection you and your spouse have to the name!
I like [name_f]Astoria[/name_f]! I pronounce is like -eh-story-ya, so I don’t hear a$$. I think it’s a beautiful name
I think the uh-storia pronunciation is beautiful…but we live relatively near to [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] I know a lot of people around here say the first syllable as ‘as’-toria, and that would discourage me from using it.
However, a lot of people like and use [name_u]Aster[/name_u] & [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] without much problem, so it can work.
I think it’s beautiful and [name_u]Story[/name_u] is a super cute nn. I first read it as the way you pronounce it so I don’t think that would be too big of a problem.
I like it! I wouldn’t say “ass” and I don’t think anyone would assume that’s how to pronounce it. Kids may joke around about it but they do that with any name. It’s not my style but it’s a pretty name and I absolutely love the idea of the nickname [name_u]Story[/name_u]! Very cute!
I love [name_f]Astoria[/name_f]! It’s very similar to one of my favorites, [name_f]Astara[/name_f]. I don’t think “ass” jumps out at all.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE L. O. V. E. the name [name_f]Astoria[/name_f]. LOVE it. I don’t think “ass” at all. I used to like [name_u]Aspen[/name_u] until I was reading comments on behindthename.com (Nameberry is soooooo much better) and everybody was like “Ass-pen, it sounds like ass-pen” and that ruined the name for me. But I will ALWAYS love [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] and nothing can ruin a name this beautiful.
