[name_f]Astraea[/name_f] is one of my favourite names for girls and finds herself among my Top 10. She’s lovely, conjured beautiful imagery and is very meaningful to me. I have a few questions regarding her:

  • Would there be any issues regarding the spelling?
    I honestly don’t see any. [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] is the most intuitive spelling for me, but then again, not everyone may think so. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it may be difficult for people to spell or pronounce it? Would they resort to [name_f]Asteria[/name_f]?

  • What are your thoughts on [name_f]Astraea[/name_f]?
    [name_m]Just[/name_m] your general thoughts!

  • What would you name a sibling to [name_f]Astraea[/name_f]?
    Bonus: I have been thinking of [name_f]Athena[/name_f] & [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] which prompted me to make this post. I don’t know if they fit together or not, so I’d like a bit of guidance here.

  • What middle name would you give to her?

Astraea is gorgeous :sparkles:

I don’t think so, but there could be some pronunciation confusion.

Astraea feels like a more mysterious Astrid. She makes me think of… starry skies, the color silver, elegant black velvet gowns, moonlit fields of wildflowers, and the call of a lonely owl

Athena & Astraea are lovely together, despite feeling a bit matchy. My first thought for a sibling was Hecate, but I could also see Astraea with a sister named Sybil, Cassiopeia, Cosima, Hero, or Leontine. I could see her with a brother named Evander, Casimir, Lysander, Thaddeus, or Lucian.

-The only spelling error that I think could possibly happen is Astraya. Once people learn it I think it’ll be hard to misname her again
-I love [name_f]Astraea[/name_f]! Probably my number four space-related name for girls (Behind [name_f]Stella[/name_f], [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], and [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] :grin:). I think she’s absolutely beautiful and deserves more love :two_hearts:

I do think the pronunciation would be problematic. [name_f]English[/name_f] speakers would pronounce it ə-STRAY-ə, in Greek, it would be something like a-STRIE-a. But I don’t think anyone would be likely to confuse it with [name_f]Asteria[/name_f].

I’m not fond of the prominent “stray” sound.

Hmmmm I’d go with [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] [name_f]Vashti[/name_f].

It would actually be ah-STREH-ah, so pretty close to the English pronunciation! Just an “eh” sound instead of an “ay” sound!

Yeah, I do see people misspelling it as Astraya, but I don’t think that’s a big deal. It’s easy to say Astraea-with-an-E-not-a-Y! As for pronunciation, I think it’s pretty straight-forward!

I think it’s really beautiful, with a really magical sound and feel and usable nicknames like Ash, Asta, Rae and Raya! A great choice for sure!

I do think Athena and Astraea work! I think you’d have to commit to another mythological name for a third child, but the matchy A initials don’t bother me. For a sibling, I might use Nephele, Persephone, Leonie, Cordelia, Ferelith, Morwenna, Ambrose, Emilian, Evander, Peregrine, Percival, Solomon, etc. - anything that’s grand and a little different!

I’m really bad at making combos haha, but I’d probably go for something short and familiar, to balance out Astraea’s out-there vibe! Ruby & Nell which you both have on your UC, for example, would work well as middles for it imo!

I think the issue would be that people might not know the name (and thus not know how to spell it), or potentially tie it to [name_f]Estrella[/name_f] depending on where you are/if they’re familiar with the alcohol brand.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] I think it’s particularly difficult in general, once you know it and have seen it? Not really - I think it would be fine.

What are your thoughts on [name_f]Astraea[/name_f]?

I love [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] - distinctive, magical, starry and interesting to say and look at too

Spelling
I took Spanish classes for six years in elementary and middle school as a kid, and I’ve lived in a majority Latin(x) community through most of my life, so to me, [name_f]Estrella[/name_f] is the most intuitive spelling. However, I imagine many people who don’t speak any/much Spanish would assume this name would be spelt [name_f]Astraea[/name_f]. The a-e-a ending is a bit tricky, but it’s not too tricky. I’d get used to it in a heartbeat if I actually met an [name_f]Astraea[/name_f]!

Thoughts
Totally lovely. Spacey and spunky. It’s a big name to wear, but I think it’s doable and fun!

i absolutely love this name! it’s so sparkly and magical, and has so many fun nickname options. aster? asta? i love them so much. astraea is such a gorgeous name.

I agree that the spelling makes sense but I think that many vowels in a row might throw people off a bit when they first read it so occasional corrections and clarifications might be needed. I do think this is the best spelling.
[name_f]Gorgeous[/name_f] name, love the star connection/imagery.
I think [name_f]Athena[/name_f] and [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] are too matchy since they share several sounds but the vibes make sense together.

It is very beautiful in the sound. I don’t think people would say [name_f]Asteria[/name_f] if they can read well, perhaps a child might have issues spelling it at first. If you wanted to simplify it, you could use [name_u]Aster[/name_u] as a NN , it is also a star name and the name of a species of little flowers I think are adorable.

  1. i don’t think so! i know that estrella and astraea are pronounced similarly, but from an american stand point people would probably spell it astraea! i find it really straight-forward in terms of pronunciation as well. even if someone does end up messing up the pronunciation or spelling, a quick correction should be easy enough!

[name_f]Astraea[/name_f] is one of my all time favorite names! It’s in my top 10 too. I love it! I’m personally considering [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] for a future daughter, but this is making me think maybe I don’t want to leave her as a middle name!

The only problem I have with it is that someone once wrote on here that sounds like you’re saying Australia with an accent, but it hasn’t deterred me much.
