Astrid Lindgren Names!

Here’s a list of the original Swedish names that have been used in [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] Lindgren’s wonderful literature which I have loved since I was a small child.

I’d love to know what these names translate to in your languages- which names have the books and characters where you live?

Any favourites, name or character-wise?

I’m sure I forgot a few but here’s the list:

  • I think it’s quite interesting that there are quite a few repeats of names in her works, thoughts?

[name_u]Love[/name_u] it! I read [name_f]Pippi[/name_f], [name_f]Ronia[/name_f], and Children of Noisy Village. [name_f]Pippi[/name_f] and [name_f]Ronia[/name_f] were my favorites. I don’t have the books with me (mum’s attic) but I’ll see if I remember what their names were in the English books I have.

[name_f]Pippi[/name_f]
[name_f]Pippi[/name_f]- Pippilotta Provisiona Garbedina Dandeliona, had to look that one up!
[name_f]Annika[/name_f]- no change
[name_m]Tommy[/name_m]- no change
[name_m]Efraim[/name_m]- [name_m]Ephraim[/name_m] (had to look that up, too, couldn’t remember if his name was changed)

[name_f]Ronia[/name_f] the Robber’s Daughter
[name_f]Ronja[/name_f]- [name_f]Ronia[/name_f]
and… I don’t recognize any of the other names. Her friend was [name_m]Birk[/name_m]. Oh, I looked it up and found this. No wonder I don’t recognize them, they’re quite different in some cases. I only remember [name_f]Ronia[/name_f] and [name_m]Birk[/name_m] really well.
[name_m]Joen[/name_m]- [name_m]Jep[/name_m]
Labbas- not sure, can’t remember or find it, who was this character? Maybe I’ll remember.
Fjosok- Foolok
Lovis- no change
Jutis- Jutto
Knotas- Knott
Turre- Tapper
Undis- no change

Children of Noisy Village (The Six Bullerby Children)
[name_f]Britta[/name_f]- no change
[name_f]Anna[/name_f]- no change
[name_u]Lisa[/name_u]- no change
[name_m]Olle[/name_m]- [name_u]Ollie[/name_u]
the other names I either don’t remember or they’re too different for me to recognize as characters. [name_u]Lisa[/name_u]'s brothers were [name_m]Lars[/name_m] and [name_m]Pip[/name_m].

I also read Madicken, but I don’t remember it well at all. I think she was [name_f]Meg[/name_f] here. I do remember a [name_u]Matti[/name_u] and a [name_f]Mia[/name_f]… and a maid named [name_f]Alma[/name_f]. Gosh, what a trip down memory lane. Makes me want to dig though mum’s attic and find these books.

I love [name_m]Emil[/name_m] and [name_f]Ronja[/name_f]! These are names very much identified with [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] Lindgren in Iceland (she is very much loved here). I have only read [name_f]Ronja[/name_f] Ræningjadóttir in Icelandic, and I remember [name_f]Ronja[/name_f] is unchanged, her parents are named Matthías and Lovísa (both names I also love), and her friend is named Birkir. In most of these cases it is quite easy to ‘translate’ from Swedish to Icelandic.

These are some of the names translated in the portuguese versions:

Pippilotta Viktualia Rullgardina Krusmynta - Pippilotta Comilança Veneziana [name_f]Bala[/name_f]-de-Goma Filhefraim Meialonga
[name_f]Annika[/name_f] - Aninha/[name_f]Anika[/name_f]
[name_m]Tommy[/name_m] - [name_m]Tom[/name_m]

Thanks for the great list! I haven’t read many [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] Lindgren books, but I like what I have read. I actually have a cousin named [name_f]Ronja[/name_f]

[name_f]Annika[/name_f] - beautiful, one of my faves
[name_m]Efraim[/name_m] - I like this name, though I prefer the [name_m]Ephraim[/name_m] spelling.
[name_f]Kerstin[/name_f] - I like [name_f]Kirsten[/name_f], though I’ve heard that it’s constantly misspelled as [name_f]Kristen[/name_f].
[name_f]Britta[/name_f] - I really love this name  I don’t even care that it’s a water filter.
[name_f]Greta[/name_f] - super cute, I’d love to meet a little [name_f]Greta[/name_f]
[name_f]Mirabell[/name_f] - beautiful, love this name
Madicken - interesting and pretty at the same time

[name_m]Lukas[/name_m] - love this name
[name_m]Anders[/name_m] - like this one a lot, great refresh of a classic
[name_m]Oskar[/name_m] - love it!
[name_m]Mattias[/name_m] - lovely name
Fille ([name_m]Filip[/name_m]) - I think this spelling would be too problematic, but I do love [name_m]Philip[/name_m].
[name_m]Krister[/name_m] - interesting one.
Jutis - is this pronounced like [name_m]Judas[/name_m]?
[name_m]Jonas[/name_m] - I really want to meet one, very cool

[name_m]Bertil[/name_m] - this is an interesting one. [name_u]Bertie[/name_u] and [name_f]Myrtle[/name_f] put together. Sorta cute  Is this a male or a female name?

Interesting thread!

I read most of these books in Dutch.
I recognize many of the names, but not all of them. So I only included the ones I remember/found online within a couple minutes

Seems like most stayed the same. Kind of random that they changed just a couple of them. Especially [name_m]Emil[/name_m] to Michiel surprises me, since [name_m]Emil[/name_m] (spelled Emiel/[name_m]Emile[/name_m]) is a fairly common name in Belgium.

I love [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] Lindgren’s books, and I’ve read most of them more than once. The names I like the most from her books are:

[name_m]Alfred[/name_m] - I adore this name and I think it’s mostly because of my love for [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] in the [name_m]Emil[/name_m] books (and movies).
[name_m]Emil[/name_m]
Björn
[name_f]Alma[/name_f]/[name_u]Alva[/name_u]
[name_m]Lasse[/name_m]
[name_m]Jonatan[/name_m] - I 100 % associate this name with the oldest brother in The Brothers Lionheart. I like the name and love the character!
[name_m]Mattias[/name_m]
[name_m]Kalle[/name_m]

All of these names are the same in my country. The only difference is that Björn is Bjørn instead :stuck_out_tongue:
