Astrid

Can I get away with naming a future girl “[name]Astrid[/name]” when I already have a son named “[name]Sebastian[/name]”? Are the “ast” sounds too similar for a sibset? (Please tell me it’s ok, she’s my #1 girl name crush, lol!)

Any suggestions for a feminine middle name to balance the potentially harsh-sounding first name? Last name is 3 syllables and begins with a “B”. So far my favorite combos are “[name]Astrid[/name] [name]Noelle[/name]” and “[name]Astrid[/name] [name]Lucille[/name]” (although in this case, it’s more the meaning – “divinely beautiful light” – that I like more than the name itself… [name]Lucille[/name] tends to remind me of [name]Lucille[/name] Ball and B. B. [name]King[/name]'s guitar right away.)

Thanks!!

I think it would be perfectly fine, they go well together. The ast sound falls in different parts of the names and aren’t really pronounced similarly.
[name]Astrid[/name] [name]Giselle[/name] is a nice combo

[name]Astrid[/name] [name]Giselle[/name] is a nice combo

I think they sound good together!

Ooh I like [name]Astrid[/name] [name]Giselle[/name]. There’s just something about the -elle names that I really like as middles, I dunno!

I love [name]Astrid[/name]! I definitely think [name]Sebastian[/name] and [name]Astrid[/name] could work. I do love the combos [name]Astrid[/name] [name]Giselle[/name] and [name]Astrid[/name] [name]Noelle[/name].

I’ve been thinking about putting it on my own list. Right now I like [name]Astrid[/name] [name]Evangeline[/name] and [name]Astrid[/name] [name]Rebecca[/name]…

Good luck!

well I know we go quickly to the playground when we think of kids names but the name has ASS in it…in fact, [name]Jan[/name] from the Office named her baby that and everyone made fun of it…I would have to ask…what do you like about it besides the sound…[name]Sebastian[/name] is a kick butt name…I have a friend who’s named that and we all call him [name]Basti[/name] but [name]Astrid[/name] sounds like Ass-trip, Astroid, ASS blip, Ass burp I mean kids can be really cruel… I just wanted to know what you liked about it…and is worth a life time of jokes…
(and I know kids can make fun of any name but you’re practically handing it to them on a silver platter)

@reeljagkb - I know what you mean and I’m aware of the Office reference and all that, but I think the Scandinavian history behind the name and the meaning “divinely beautiful” trump the potential teasing. I think it’s a strong name for a girl to have. When I hear the name I tend to think of words like “astral” and other words relating to the stars or the sky, etc. I think it’s beautiful, but to each her own =)

And you’re right, kids can make fun of any name, but sometimes being prepared for potential teasing might be better than the teasing that sneaks up on you. [name]Case[/name] in point, my nephew was named “[name]Kyle[/name] [name]Martin[/name] (Lastname)” after my sister in law and her husband debated for months and months, finally choosing it because they decided it was tease-proof. Um, yeah… until her father in law started calling him “K-[name]Mart[/name]”!!! lol =) She’s completely mortified now. My son [name]Sebastian[/name] will probably be teased over the [name]Little[/name] Mermaid reference, or maybe called Se-bastard or something. You never know.

OMG well that just proves it you can make fun of ANYTHING…I couldn’t imagine getting Kmart outta that Vanillia name…wow. I like the name [name]Kyle[/name]…

but just so you know I am not so sure many kids are up on Scandinavian history and an Assburp might be said on the bus by a tool bag trying to be funny…just putting that out there…

Then I’ll just have to explain to my daughter that some people are just tool bags trying to be funny

Kids might not be up on Scandinavian history, but they probably are up on their cartoons. The main female character in [name]How[/name] To Train Your Dragon was named [name]Astrid[/name], and she was a cool, strong character.

Curious, do you find the same potential for teasing in other names that have “as” in them? For example, [name]Lucas[/name], [name]Silas[/name], [name]Alastair[/name], [name]Asa[/name], [name]Ashley[/name]? Or is it mainly the Office that has ruined [name]Astrid[/name] in particular for you?

I think [name]Astrid[/name] is a gorgeous strong name & I think it works well with [name]Sebastian[/name].
Honestly I am a bit tired of hearing about the whole Office reference, will kids in 10 years have this in their heads? I doubt it. That being said nearly any name is open to teasing with a little creativity. But that’s life. I went to school for 7 years with a girl named Grimsley and she was one of the most popular girls… I think the person makes the name.

No not as much…it was prolly the office but none of the names you mentioned start with a literal Ass sounding word…

like Aslan …he was a [name]Lion[/name] on the [name]Lion[/name] the witch and the wardrobe but the name still has the word ASS in it…

ya know if kids wanna be cruel then they will be…so there’s no getting around it…

it’s a name a kid will have to have for the rest of their life and I think that even when they are older people make jokes

“nice ASS…trid…”

“yeah don’t be an ASS…trid”

“Kiss my Ass…trid” I think she will be like “yeah yeah yeah I have heard them ALL! shut up!”

imo it’s name torture…but if you love it…then go with it…because you’re right Kids do know that movie and they might not say anything…

@bluedahlia, thank you! I completely agree.

@reeljagkb - I see what you’re saying, but I still really love the name. Thanks for offering some food for thought though, it’s always good to consider all sides.

I absolutely adore the name [name]Astrid[/name] and think it sounds beautiful with [name]Sebastian[/name]. I actually thought of a similar connection in meaning (divinely beautiful light), but I was thinking more along the lines of [name]Lux[/name] for a middle name (especially since you mentioned the first person to come to mind was [name]Lucille[/name] Ball). It still means “light” but you can bypass [name]Lucille[/name] - although, [name]Lucille[/name] Ball is pretty awesome. Either combination sounds great in my opinion. I guess it’s just preference and what sounds best with your last name.

Also, I’m 27 and have never watched an episode of The Office (UK or US) so I wouldn’t worry about it.

@[name]Demi[/name], thanks! I was thinking of the name [name]Lux[/name] as well, but I think I’d prefer something a little… I don’t know… softer, I guess?.. for the middle. [name]Astrid[/name] has a lot of hard consonants and so does my last name, so having something to lighten it up (ha ha no pun intended) in the middle would be best I think. [name]Do[/name] you know of other names that mean “light” apart from [name]Lux[/name], [name]Lucille[/name], [name]Lucia[/name], etc? I think [name]Helen[/name] and its derivatives ([name]Ellen[/name], [name]Elin[/name], etc) mean “light” as well but I need to double check that. I love the meaning “divinely beautiful light” because I’m an avid photographer who is always looking for some beautiful natural lighting… [name]Sebastian[/name] was photographed like crazy during his first year of life especially, and I’m sure my future son or daughter would be as well

I agree with this. Besides, sometimes I wonder if teasing potential is more overrated than it really is in real life. Sure, I’m sure some kids make fun of other kids because of their names, but I might have heard of it happening once or twice in real life… it could be because all the kids I know are [name]Christian[/name] kids and they grow up right next to inner-city kids with names that are pretty much the opposite of [name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Clementine[/name], and [name]Julian[/name], but it just doesn’t seem to be a problem at all in my area. I’m sure it’d be worse in public schools, but still, I really don’t see it being a huge problem.

To the OP, if it was a problem, would you consider using a nn for it? I have been crushing pretty hard on [name]Astrid[/name] right now, too, and I think it’s just stunning… I knew the teasing potential would get mentioned if I ever brought it up, and I recently started tossing around [name]Addy[/name] as a nn for [name]Astrid[/name]… it’s a bit out-there, but I think it could definitely work, if you’re interested in that. I think it would also help to differentiate between the semi-similar sounds in [name]Astrid[/name] and [name]Sebastian[/name], too…

@ashthedreamer, yeah, I mean even the most vanilla names can be teased. I’m one of a bazillion [name]Lisa[/name]'s of the 80s, and I heard it all: [name]Lisa[/name] Pizza (not fun when you’re a freckled redhead especially lol), [name]Lisa[/name] [name]Lisa[/name] and the Cult [name]Jam[/name], [name]Lisa[/name] [name]Simpson[/name], etc. And that’s not even taking into account my maiden name, which got its fair share of teasing too! I think people put too much worry into teasing potential with a name. [name]Even[/name] if you think you’ve picked the most tease-proof name ever, that doesn’t mean your kid won’t be teased for one of a gazillion other traits that are beyond your control.

[name]Addy[/name] is an interesting NN idea for [name]Astrid[/name]. I it’s definitely something to consider! If I went with [name]Astrid[/name] [name]Noelle[/name] or [name]Astrid[/name] [name]Lucille[/name] I thought I could use the NN’s “[name]Annie[/name]” or “[name]Allie[/name]” going off of her first-middle initials. But only if she REALLY hated her name, lol.

According to this website, Helen (and its variations) mean “bright, shining one” but I’ve read “light” elsewhere.

Other options: Chiara, Eileen, Lenore, Leora, Nera, Nora, Noor, Zia, Zohara

I can’t speak for anyone else, but my take on the last post you made is thus: [name]Astrid[/name] (btw I [name]LOVE[/name] the name) makes the ASS sound. The other names you listed, [name]Lucas[/name], [name]Silas[/name], [name]Alastair[/name], [name]Asa[/name], [name]Ashley[/name] make different sounds desptie the “as”.

@courtneyberry - true but kids can definitely make fun of those names just as easily if they really wanted to. “Hey [name]Luc[/name]-ASS” etc.

Maybe it’s just my sloppy NJ pronunciation, but I sort of pronounce the first syllable of “[name]Astrid[/name]” somewhere in between “ass” and “azz.” More like “as” as in, “as the world turns.” ha ha. (Actually I think it’s definitely my sloppy NJ pronunciation, lol.)
