Attika and Peridot

What do you all think of the names I’m currently rolling around my tongue? Attika, spelled this way (the ancient Greek spelling). I really like it and think that [name_f]Attie[/name_f] might be a cute nickname (though would it get confused with [name_f]Hattie[/name_f]?) Right now our combo is Attika [name_u]Fable[/name_u]…but other suggestions are welcome.

I’m also loving [name_f]Peridot[/name_f]. The fiancee is so-so, but he didn’t rule it out. I can get [name_f]Dot[/name_f] and PJ as nicknames with [name_f]Peridot[/name_f]. Right now my combo is [name_f]Peridot[/name_f] [name_f]Junia[/name_f]…but any other suggestions are welcome.

Thoughts on these two? [name_f]Do[/name_f] they mesh well with [name_u]Tavi[/name_u] [name_f]Leona[/name_f] (our current fave girl name)? [name_u]Tavi[/name_u] is pronounced [name_m]Tah[/name_m]-vee…

I think Attika is really cool but, I’m not too fond of [name_f]Peridot[/name_f]. Though I do think [name_f]Dot[/name_f] is pretty cute ; )

Thanks for the feedback. Any other thoughts?

Attika is forever connected to the Attica Prison Riots for me. Yes, there will be some people who haven’t heard of it, but it was the deadliest prison riot in U.S. History and the subject of several movies. I would be less concerned with Attie getting confused with Hattie, and more with the more common Addie, but that’s not really so bad. Attie is cute. If you live outside the US I think Attika is probably usable.

Always loved Junia, though!

I also immediately thought of the Attica Prison riot. Also, there’s a scene in the movie Dog [name_u]Day[/name_u] [name_f]Afternoon[/name_f] where the characters chant “Attica! Attica!” at the police, referencing the police brutality in the Attica Prison riots, and I thought of that right away. Apparently there are a few other films which use an Attica chant in a similar way or which reference or satirize the scene in Dog [name_u]Day[/name_u] [name_f]Afternoon[/name_f].

[name_f]Peridot[/name_f] [name_f]Junia[/name_f] nicknamed PJ or [name_f]Dot[/name_f] is cute! I like [name_u]Tavi[/name_u] as well

Thank you for your comments. I know about the Attica Prison riots and we are American though we are currently teaching outside the U.S. right now. I do get your hesitations on that name. I’m liking [name_f]Peridot[/name_f] quite a lot more than Attika anyway at this time…anything else you’d pair with [name_f]Peridot[/name_f]? Any initial?

[name_f]Peridot[/name_f] [name_f]Junia[/name_f] seems pretty perfect, with the more straightforward sounds of [name_f]Peridot[/name_f] balanced with the feminine [name_f]Junia[/name_f]. If you like initial nicknames, I like J names in the middle. P.J. is cute, but none of the other letters I try are quite as nice sounding. [name_u]Peri[/name_u] and [name_f]Dot[/name_f] or [name_f]Dottie[/name_f] are awesome nicknames, too.
Other Js (but [name_f]Junia[/name_f] is my fav!):
[name_f]Julia[/name_f]
[name_f]Jessamy[/name_f]
[name_f]Judith[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
Josine
[name_f]Jacinta[/name_f]
[name_f]Jacqueline[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Johanna[/name_f] (2nd favorite!)

If you are saying [name_f]Peridot[/name_f] right, [name_f]Dot[/name_f] doesn’t make sense for a nickname, in my opinion anyway… I do really like [name_f]Peridot[/name_f] as a name though! Soft and sweet!! I adore [name_f]Peridot[/name_f] [name_u]Fable[/name_u]!!! [name_f]Peridot[/name_f] matches better with [name_u]Tavi[/name_u] [name_f]Leona[/name_f] too.

(As for Attika, I like it, but as others have mentioned, there are some negative connotations which might be unpleasant. )

[name_f]Peridot[/name_f] is a [name_m]French[/name_m] word pronounced Pair-ee-doe, yes. But the English pronunciation is Pair-i-dot. So, I am pronouncing it the English way, where [name_f]Dot[/name_f] makes perfect sense as a nickname. I don’t want to have two word names, so [name_f]Peridot[/name_f] [name_u]Fable[/name_u] is a little much…it does have a nice ring to it, though, and I love [name_u]Fable[/name_u].

I don’t know what you mean, in terms of the gemstone, peridot is not pronounced like pair-e-dot. Its pair-e-doe. So I fully agree dot is not a natural nn for paridot, but that’s not my issue. In my opinion a nn can be anything. My issue is more so how you’re planning to pronounce it. No one else will pronounce it that way. Because that’s how its pronounced. And yes I am in the us and yes that’s the English pronunciation

According to the English dictionary it’s the dot pronunciation:

Here’s [name_f]Peridot[/name_f] being said aloud:

Not to be argumentative, but I’ve done my research. Anyone I’ve asked that speaks English pronounces it with dot, but I’ve also heard it doe…which is the [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation. Here’s a site where both pronunciations are used:

But yeah, I’d be using the dot pronunciation.

The -doe and -dot pronunciation are both correct for [name_f]Peridot[/name_f], and there are English language dictionaries that list both pronunciations. I almost mentioned it in my comment, but in my experience the -dot pronunciation is so much more common that I decided it wasn’t worth worrying about.

I like [name_f]Peridot[/name_f] (prefer the [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation but both are legit). I love the nn [name_u]Peri[/name_u]. I knew a girl named [name_u]Peri[/name_u] and she wore it so well. Not really a fan of Attika though. [name_f]Peridot[/name_f] [name_f]Junia[/name_f] is adorable.

Exactly. The pronunciation issue might be something to consider, though. That doesn’t put me off the name…as I really don’t think it’s a big deal. Besides, if she’s called [name_f]Dot[/name_f], she wouldn’t have to do nearly as much explaining.

[name_m]Ah[/name_m] my mistake. As a gem enthusiast and an American, I’ve never heard it pronounced like that - with a dot at the end. It sounds clunky and a tad ugly in that respect. It goes from being unique to sounding made up… But Attica sounds like a prison and only a prison- so I guess I just don’t get your style.

BUT, I dont have to. Its about what works best for your kid and your family

Good luck with your choice.
