Augie or Auggie?

We are naming our son [name_u]August[/name_u], and for his nickname we would like to call him [name_m]Augie[/name_m]/Auggie. We are not sure how to spell it. Everything on Nameberry refers to it as [name_m]Augie[/name_m] (real-life people’s names, etc.) I’ve only seen it with 2 G’s in a book called Wonder. I think it looks better as [name_m]Augie[/name_m], but in my head, I read it like AW-JEE (soft G sound) rather than AW-[name_m]GEE[/name_m] (hard G).

Not sure what to do. I like [name_m]Augie[/name_m] better, but my teacher brain won’t let it go!

Personally I like Auggie better and in my head that’s how it should be spelled. However since it is just a nickname and [name_m]Augie[/name_m] is also used a lot, I don’t think it really matters which way you spell it. Choose the one you like best.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] the name [name_u]August[/name_u] BTW!

I would probably spring for [name_m]Augie[/name_m] simply because [name_u]August[/name_u] only has one G in it to begin with. But for a nickname, spelling isn’t all that important.

I would go with [name_m]Augie[/name_m], no need to double the g!

My friends have a son named [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], and they spell his nickname ‘Auggie.’ I lean towards that spelling mainly because that’s the only one I’m familiar with. I really don’t think you can go wrong though.

I read it with a hard G

I think either works. I would probably do Auggie. It looks “right” to me. Congratulations! [name_u]August[/name_u] is such a great name.

For some reason Auggie looks ‘right’ to me. But that doesnt mean that you cant spell it [name_m]Augie[/name_m]. Either works here, just choose the spelling you are comfortable with.

Good luck!

I prefer the double ‘g’ for the same reason that this makes a hard G sound in English. I always think [name_m]Augie[/name_m] looks too much like a rude group act

I read Wonder too, and have always thought it was Auggie (pronounced Aw-gee). I personally stick with Auggie, as I like the look better, and that it relates to the book too. I don’t think I ever considered it being Aw-jee, because of the hard ‘G’ in [name_u]August[/name_u], and it sounds rather more like another, less fortunate word. But I agree with pps that spelling in terms of nicknames might not be hugely important. By the way, [name_u]August[/name_u] is such a handsome name, and Auggie is super adorable!

I like the spelling Auggie better, I agree with pronouncing [name_m]Augie[/name_m] differently in my head. The [name_u]August[/name_u] I know spells it Auggy, I like the ie better but he’s never had issues with two G’s.
