I’m due in [name_u]June[/name_u] and having a girl who we are considering naming [name_f]Aurelie[/name_f] but people don’t seem to know how to pronounce it. We’ve been saying “ah-ray-lee” but it seems like every one else automatically says it as “aura-lee.” Are we setting her up with a lifetime of confusion?
There’s the [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation oh-reh-lee and there’s the non-[name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation are-uh-lee, which I find to be the prettier pronunciation. I love the name.
At first glance I did think [name_f]Aura[/name_f]-lee, however with a name like that most often people would be aware of the possibility of getting it wrong and ask.
Some people might find it annoying having to clarify throughout life, but others love having a different name and don’t mind. So it just comes down to whether you love it.
I pronounce it “ora-lee,” though I get why you pronounce it “au-[name_u]RAY[/name_u]-lee” because [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] can be pronounced with the “[name_u]Ray[/name_u]” syllable. If you’re in love with the name, don’t let pronounciation difficulties stop you!
I always say it as “[name_f]Aura[/name_f]-lee” in my head, but if I met someone with this name and they pronounced it your way, I think it’d be easy for me to switch over. I think the way you pronounce it is much prettier!
There will definitely be some pronunciation issues, but so long as you don’t mind correcting people every now and then, I think you should definitely use it. It’s a beautiful name.
[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] is also a lovely option, with a great meaning!
I pronounce it the [name_m]French[/name_m] way (oh-reh-lee) but without the accent you def. get away with pronouncing it like you do. The people pronouncing it aura-lee are most likely unfamiliar with the name/not familiar with [name_m]French[/name_m]. The mis-pronunciation will probably happen a lot since it’s a pretty uncommon name (at least in the US). You will have to decide if you’re ok with that or not. I think it’s a lovely name!
