Austin...for a girl?

I’ve met a lot of [name]Austin[/name]'s (all of them boys, of course) but recently I’ve met a girl [name]Austin[/name]! I looked it up to double-check that it isn’t an unisex name…and it’s not! I suppose that there isn’t any “rules” to naming, but I find it weird to cross genders like that when it’s not unisex…am I just naive? [name]Do[/name] people usually cross genders like that?

I’m so confused by this question. Yes, people use traditionally male names on girls not infrequently. It’s discussed very often on this board.

It’s not unisex? It’s the name of a city… but I don’t like the name at all on boy or girl. I’m not a fan of place names.

[name]Austin[/name], TX is named for [name]Stephen[/name] [name]Fuller[/name] [name]Austin[/name]. He is considered the “Father of [name]Texas[/name]”…

Yes, I’ve seen many posts discussing situations like this…I can understand names like Emerence, but a popular boy’s name like [name]Austin[/name]?

[name]Ah[/name], well wouldn’t it still be unisex then, since it’s a surname?

Surnames are “Generally” considered masculine (because they came from the father), but all rules are meant to be broken  I have a tendency to be less of a rule breaker, but such is life

I had no idea that [name]Austin[/name] was a surname…it probably makes sense for it to be unisex, then.

I wouldn’t think twice about a girl [name]Austin[/name] since [name]Austin[/name] is the name of a city. Though I personally wouldn’t do it. I dated an [name]Austin[/name] for 3 years and it was pretty serious for awhile. Are you thinking about using the name yourself for a daughter?

I know a girl (probably in college now) named [name]Austyn[/name], I think? And I know a baby girl named [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Austen[/name], [name]Austen[/name] after [name]Jane[/name] [name]Austen[/name]. Her mother would have preferred [name]Jane[/name], but the father wouldn’t have it, haha.

But yes, there’s actually a lot of boys’ names like that, like [name]Logan[/name] and [name]Blake[/name] and stuff. I’ve actually heard all the boys’ names in my signature (with the exception of [name]Boone[/name]) either used or considered for a boy.

I know a girl [name]Austin[/name] who is in her 20’s and a couple boy Austins’ a little younger. Never thought twice about it, again grew up in the south and names like that on girls isn’t that unusual. Actually [name]Austin[/name]'s brother is the differently named one with [name]Griffin[/name]. So I vote unisex on that one, I don’t see the issue of genders sharing names. But then again both DH and I have gender neutral names with [name]Alix[/name] and [name]Skyler[/name]

I’m beginning to think more and more that we should get rid of “boys’ names” and “girls’ names” labels and instead list every name under “girls’ names.” From that point it would be much easier to ask what names can be used for boys instead of the other way around.

[name]Austin[/name] is a big GP for me on a boy, mainly because I’m usually into place names and it’s quite popular. I’m not disgusted by the notion of it being on a girl, but I’m not really keen on it either.

If I were to use it for a girl, I’d at least go with [name]Austen[/name]. Not just because of [name]Jane[/name] [name]Austen[/name], but it looks a tad softer.

[name]Love[/name] it! I’d probably spell it [name]Austyn[/name] or [name]Austen[/name], but ever since the [name]Blake[/name] [name]Shelton[/name] song “[name]Austin[/name]” came out, I’ve loved that name for a girl. I’ve seen a lot of cross-gendering for baby names recently, especially with [name]Logan[/name] (I’ve seen it spelled Loganne a few times - I hate it, but whatever.) I think it’s cute to take a traditionally boy’s name and use it for a girl, especially if it’s super trendy. [name]Evan[/name] is my favorite example of it.

Except the song wasn’t about a girl named [name]Austin[/name]
She lived in [name]Austin[/name]. So I think people misunderstood the song… it’s one of my favorites by the way.

[name]Sophia[/name] [name]Austen[/name] after [name]Jane[/name] [name]Austen[/name] is really cute.

I love [name]Austen[/name] (after [name]Jane[/name] [name]Austen[/name]) as a middle for a girl, I could definitely see it as a first for someone more adventurous than I. While it is pronounced the same, [name]Austin[/name] seems all boy to me.

Oh I know, lol. But the first time I heard it I thought it was her name, and it stuck in my mind that it was a great name for a girl. Good to see another country fan!

Anything goes nowdays and it looks like the parents of today are hell bent on giving their daughters boy’s names. Why? Can someone tell me when there are millions of great girl names.
