I have a problem which is that there are very few boys names I like…or that my partner likes. We keep a shared list and there are about 5 times as many female names on it.
One of the few male names I genuinely like and could see us using eventually is [name_m]Austin[/name_m].
However, what’s the general perception of the name? Is it very dated? This would be for a child born in the next four to six years. I think [name_m]Austin[/name_m] is classic enough to handle having spiked a bit in the 1990s…it’s always been on the SSA list, and it derives from [name_m]Augustine[/name_m]. I usually don’t like surname names, but this is an exception.
Our female favorites run to style of [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_f]Cosima[/name_f]. My SO also likes word names like [name_f]Clover[/name_f] and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] that I am not as keen on.
The other boy names we like are [name_m]Moss[/name_m], [name_u]Lionel[/name_u], and Wave. And that’s…it.
[name_m]Austin[/name_m] is best of your choices, but I prefer [name_m]Augustin[/name_m] or [name_u]August[/name_u]. [name_m]Austin[/name_m] seems a bit dated to me, but ok as a mn.
I like [name_m]Austin[/name_m]…always have…[name_u]August[/name_u] is nice as well. I also like Augustan.
if you like [name_m]Austin[/name_m] and Wave, do you like [name_m]Austin[/name_m] [name_u]Waverly[/name_u]??
Thanks, guys! You made me feel better about [name_m]Austin[/name_m]. We also like [name_u]Austen[/name_u] which I know would maybe be troublesome for spelling, but looks nicer with our surname. I will definitely keep it in mind and towards the top.
@ashleyjuliette Thanks for the suggestions! [name_m]Austin[/name_m] [name_u]Waverly[/name_u] is a little too feminine for me (I think of [name_u]Waverly[/name_u] as being quite feminine). But good suggestions!
[name_m]Austin[/name_m] is a bit dated (feels like someone I went to high school with) and sounds really different from the other male/female names you like. That said, it’s not a bad name. [name_m]Just[/name_m] not my favorite.
[name_m]Austin[/name_m] is a very handsome name that enjoyed top-10 standing in the United States in the 1990’s. It’s still very popular here (#58 in 2012), but is slowly working its way back down the ladder.
[name_u]Lionel[/name_u] [name_u]August[/name_u] {or} [name_u]Lionel[/name_u] [name_m]Moss[/name_m] would be very cool, as well.
I’m an outlier here - I don’t like [name_m]Austin[/name_m]. It seemed like half the boys I grew up with were given “ustin” names - [name_m]Austin[/name_m], [name_m]Justin[/name_m], [name_u]Dustin[/name_u] - making the names feel very dated. To me, [name_m]Austin[/name_m] should always have a sister named [name_f]Brittany[/name_f].
[name_m]Austin[/name_m] is the best of your names. It will be able to stand on its own. As far as being dated. Names go in cycles. People are now naming kids [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_u]Noah[/name_u], [name_u]Emerson[/name_u], etc. Those are old peoples names. You name your son something you love. [name_m]Austin[/name_m] is a handsome choice!
