Aveline?

I have been noticing it lately on forum posts, and to me it just sounds so pretty and unique, yet familiar.

Original diminutive of [name]Avis[/name], it was used quite a bit in [name]Norman[/name] [name]England[/name], but declined and disapeared in the middle ages. Ready for revival? Its sounds pretty close to names like [name]Ava[/name] and [name]Evelyn[/name], but fresh and different.

What would you think, meeting a little [name]Aveline[/name]? Pronounced AV e leen.

Opinions.

I love it; it’s on my favourites list because one of my cousins is called [name]Evelina[/name]. I am torn between all the variants: [name]Aveline[/name], Avelina, Avelyn, [name]Evalyn[/name], [name]Evaline[/name], etc. (My cousin insists on Avelina if I’m to honour her because she thinks it’s closest to [name]Evelina[/name], lol. I actually like [name]Aveline[/name] best.)

When I ask people about “Av-e-leen”, they always ALWAYS just repeat, “You mean Av-e-line?” (“line” as in the word line.) >< “No, I mean AV-E-LEEN.” Apparently this was the pronunciation used on some old TV show I’ve never watched, all about Liverpudlians or something. If you anywhere but the UK I don’t think this will be a problem, though. I don’t plan to stay in the UK when I’m older so fingers crossed I can use Aveline.

I live in Australia, so that helps. [name]Glad[/name] to see another lover of the name.

First let me say that I like aveline a lot! I do believe the origin listed nameberry is wrong though.

[name]Aveline[/name] means hazelnut in French even though noisette is the common word for it (noisette is actually a type of aveline) i have seen it connected to evelyne on 1 french board site but most say hazelnut. After looking into it i dont think theres a connection to evelyne.

A little info for name enthusiasts!: aveline comes from the Latin word abellana and not avis, the Normans picked up it up when the conquered the province of avellino which was known for hazelnuts.

[name]Evelyn[/name] is a matronymic surname derived from [name]Aveline[/name], so [name]Evelyn[/name] technically means ‘child of [name]Aveline[/name]’, as a surname [name]Evelyn[/name] was used to denote someone whose mother was called [name]Aveline[/name] or one of the variants. So you’re right; [name]Aveline[/name] doesn’t come from [name]Evelyn[/name] - [name]Evelyn[/name] comes from [name]Aveline[/name]! Since [name]Evelyn[/name] is a surname it is used on boys from time to time (I think [name]Evelyn[/name] was once exclusively masculine like most surname names but I am not certain.) Anyway its surnamey connection to [name]Aveline[/name] is probably why you will occasionally see [name]Evelyn[/name] listed as meaning ‘hazelnut’.

I love [name]Aveline[/name]!

@amber I dont know why I didnt realize they are connected, I’m also not 100% sure why there is a connection to avis or birds, I wouldnt rule it out, Im sure someone could find info - Im going to take this to the name board so it doesnt take away from the baby name opinions here.

Actually in English it should be pronounced ([name]AVE[/name]-uh-[name]LINE[/name]) the French pronunciation is (AHV-e-LEEN. I really like this. [name]One[/name] of my personal favorites.

[name]Love[/name] it

I love it! It’s adorable. I also love Avalïse.

Reminds me of [name]Avalon[/name] which I have seen getting a bit of attention lately, but [name]Aveline[/name] seems much more classy!

Behind the name lists a couple of origins, including appellation mountain. But It seems that no one really knows, so [name]Aveline[/name] could mean bird, hazelnut and maybe even life for [name]Eve[/name]. But I think the bird and hazelnut (its a synonym of hazelnut, I think) meanings are the strongest candidates so far.

You could pick whichever one you liked, I suppose.

But glad to see people love it, would love to meet a little [name]Aveline[/name].

[name]Aveline[/name] is a French form of [name]Hazel[/name]. I adore vintage names, but find [name]Hazel[/name] a bit harsh. [name]Aveline[/name] is adorable! I’m glad Nameberry introduced me to this name! I would totally use it! I love [name]Evelyn[/name], but cannot believe it is in the top #50! I would prefer to use a name that is not in the top 100.

[name]Aveline[/name] is far off the top 1000.
