Avery: Boy or Girl?

I love [name_u]Avery[/name_u] for a boy, but it’s very popular for girls at the moment. I’m not at all of the opinion that a name should be considered unusable for boys simply because it’s increasing in popularity for girls, but do you think a boy named [name_u]Avery[/name_u] would have a significant number of people assuming he’s a girl based on first name alone? When you see ‘[name_u]Avery[/name_u]’, do you think ‘boy’, ‘girl’, or ‘ambiguous’?

I’d say it’s ambiguous. I only know male Averys (4 of them, actually) all between 18-30. I like it a lot for both genders, but the difference in popularity isn’t terribly drastic (I believe it’s #15 for girls and in the top 200 for boys?). I’d class it as one of the few names that are equally unisex.

I would assume girl, but I wouldn’t be surprised if [name_u]Avery[/name_u] were a boy. The name isn’t used here so I would only go off what I know from roaming sites, American shows and films, which would (usually) suggest a girl. I have never come across a male [name_u]Avery[/name_u], though.

[name_u]Avery[/name_u] for a boy, times a million! I wish I could see the appeal for it on a girl, but I just… don’t. Not at all. Then again, I grew up listening to this children’s radio drama whose main character was a lovable, kind, adventurous, wise grandfatherly figure whose name is [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_u]Avery[/name_u] [name_m]Whittaker[/name_m], and I’m sure my kids will grow up with the show just like I did–I’m still collecting albums of the show now, because it IS something I want to pass down to my kids. So I love [name_u]Avery[/name_u] in his honor ([name_m]John[/name_m] doesn’t seem as special, and though I really like [name_m]Whittaker[/name_m] nn [name_u]Whit[/name_u], it almost seems too GPish and linked to the show–[name_u]Avery[/name_u] seems subtle, but still semi-obvious?), but also because it was a family name in my maternal grandfather’s family tree. It’s one of my favorite boys’ names ever, and I’ve loved it for YEARS. I’d love to use it one day!

I have also never met an [name_u]Avery[/name_u] - I have met lots of Avas so maybe I would think girl at first, but it also reminds me of [name_u]Evan[/name_u] a little bit so I would say it’s nicely in the middle.

I would think of a female- it’s a lot like other popular female names ike [name_f]Ave[/name_f], [name_f]Evie[/name_f], [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Vera[/name_f] etc

It’s all boy to me.

Boy for sure!

I love [name_u]Avery[/name_u]! It’s even in my signature. I think it works great for a boy. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if [name_u]Avery[/name_u] as a girls’ name is in the top 20 here in the US, there are still a number of parents naming their sons [name_u]Avery[/name_u]. I suppose the preference for which gender is in the eye of the beholder for any unisex name, and I don’t tsk at parents with daughters named [name_u]Avery[/name_u] or [name_u]Harper[/name_u] because I like them on boys, but I do tend to lean to one gender or the other in these kinds of situations.

I wouldn’t make an assumption on [name_u]Avery[/name_u]. To me this name is firmly unisex. It’s worth noting that [name_u]Avery[/name_u] has held on to its popularity for boys even after it became very popular for girls.

ambiguous. but the only avery i’ve know (charlotte’s webb) was female, so in MY head it’s female, but i think it goes both ways

Girl for me.

I’d assume girl and I also prefer girl. [name_u]Avery[/name_u] is a very popular girl name where I live now, and has always been only used for girls even in other places I’ve lived. I can’t really picture it on a boy but I’m sure it works.

I immediately think boy, especially since the first time I heard it was on a comic book character in a Simpsons episode called [name_u]Avery[/name_u] [name_m]Man[/name_m] haha. I really can’t imagine it on a girl if anything, so I think it’s perfectly fine for a boy.

Growing up I loved [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]'s [name_m]Web[/name_m]. The little girl was [name_f]Fern[/name_f] and the little boy was [name_u]Avery[/name_u]. So growing up [name_u]Avery[/name_u] was all boy to me.

Within the past 10 years I’ve heard [name_u]Avery[/name_u] heavily on girls. So [name_u]Avery[/name_u] leans towards the girls to me now. BUT if I heard [name_u]Avery[/name_u] on a boy I’d jump up and down with happiness.

[name_u]Avery[/name_u] rides in the same group as [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]/[name_u]Riley[/name_u]/[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]/[name_u]Taylor[/name_u] where the line rides directly in the middle as neutral.

Thank you so much everyone!

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]Avery[/name_u] for a boy <3

[name_u]Avery[/name_u] feels properly unisex to me too. If I had to guess I would guess girl, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see it on either gender.

I love [name_u]Avery[/name_u] - primarily for a boy. I don’t mind it for a girl either and do think it’s really unisex, but definitely prefer for a boy. Makes for a very pretty middle name as well (where it doesn’t matter so much which gender it is currently mostly given to).

I would assume boy, but it could be a pretty girls name too
