I posted asking about NN ideas for [name]Bernadette[/name] trying to temp DH into using it and it didn’t work. LOL I was going to use [name]Bernadette[/name] [name]Abigail[/name] but DH thinks it would be cruel and unusual punishment and I don’t want to use [name]Abigail[/name] as a FN because of it’s popularity so the alternative that I’ve found is [name]Avigail[/name].
What do you think? It would be [name]Avigail[/name] [name]Bernadette[/name].
Are there other alternatives that I don’t know about? It has to mean my father is joy.
I actually think [name]Avigail[/name] is much prettier than [name]Abigail[/name], the only problem would be is that everyone with think you are saying [name]Abigail[/name]. And honestly after all of the [name]Isabella[/name]'s I’ve met recently (no offense to anyone with a child named [name]Isabella[/name]), I would be happy to be introduced to an [name]Abigail[/name] again. But for [name]Avigail[/name], I do like it. I think it has a fresh sound to it, and the letter ‘v’ is very ‘in’ right now haha. [name]Sylvie[/name], [name]Violet[/name], [name]Xavier[/name] etc. [name]Avigail[/name] is a great name.
I think it depends on where you live. The reason there is a B vs. V in some names is because when translated from the Hebrew root the bet/vet letter could go to either b or v in English . You sometimes see [name]Devorah[/name] and rivka where you have a lot of Jewish people instead of [name]Deborah[/name] and [name]Rebecca[/name].
You may have a hard time getting through to people that your daughters name does not have a B in it if people aren’t used to seeing the spelling.
I think you should just stick with [name]Abigail[/name]. Everyone will just assume that’s her name anyway and it will save your daughter years of having her name misspelled/mispronounced.
And if legions of girls called [name]Abby[/name] puts you off the name, you can always call her [name]Gail[/name] as a nickname instead.
I used to love [name]Abigail[/name], but the popularity’s really gotten to me, and I don’t love the nn [name]Abby[/name]. [name]Avigail[/name] has really grown on me! It has a distinctively more Hebrew feel to it, but it’s still sweet and spunky. I like it. The nn [name]Avi[/name] is cute, too.
We’re from Connecticut, USA so there’s not a huge jewish community here.

Is there another name that has close to the same meaning? I know the only ones that have the exact meaning are [name]Gail[/name], [name]Abigail[/name], and [name]Avigail[/name]. But is there another name that has something about Father in it?
I would stick with [name]Abigail[/name], it’s a beautiful name. I think if you went with [name]Avigail[/name], she would constantly be correcting people from pronouncing and spelling her name wrong.
i know this is late but yes avigail means exalted father in hebrew. im not of jewish descent so im not 100% sure but ive been researching my name a bit
