Azariah?

What are your opinions on the name [name]Azariah[/name] (az-ah-[name]RY[/name]-ah)for a boy? I like [name]Azariah[/name] [name]Justus[/name], [name]Azariah[/name] [name]Jasper[/name], and [name]Azariah[/name] [name]Liam[/name]. NN could be [name]Ry[/name], or AJ if the middle name starts with a J. [name]Do[/name] you think a kid could live life with the name [name]Azariah[/name]? I like that it’s a softer sound, is different, and has potential NN’s.And it’s definitly not popular. So, honest opinions and ideas please… Thanks!

I personally think it sounds very feminine. I’m not sure I would want to go through life with that name. Then again he might totally embrace it and it might be perfect for him. I like the idea of giving him a ‘J’ middle name so he can be A.J. if he wants. My favourite J name is [name]Jericho[/name], but that only makes it more out there. I like both [name]Justus[/name] and [name]Jasper[/name]. Some J middle names that might work are:
[name]Jude[/name]
[name]Jove[/name]
[name]John[/name]
[name]Jackson[/name]
[name]James[/name]

Sorry but the first thought/impression i had when reading only the title was that it sounds like a girl name. A little too feminine for my liking.

I’m from Australia so imediately think of [name]Azaria[/name] Chamberlain
She was the little baby girl who was famously killed by a dingo when her parents were camping. Death of Azaria Chamberlain - Wikipedia

So to me it is not only a girls name, it has a very tragic association.

I think [name]Azariah[/name] [name]Justus[/name] is unexpected and awesome. Names with softer sounds are “in” right now - think of [name]Micah[/name], [name]Jeremiah[/name] and [name]Ezra[/name], all of which are obviously male. My guess is that people are telling you [name]Azariah[/name] sounds feminine because they haven’t met a little boy with that name before. I hope you go for it - they’ll change their minds once they meet him.

Thank you for all your responses!
I actually came across [name]Azariah[/name] while searching [name]Ezra[/name]- which I also like. It also reminded me of the name [name]Zachariah[/name], which I like but can’t use. I also at first thought it was a-ZAR-ree-ah which is a girl’s name, but it’s growing on me fast. I’m not pregnant right now, I wanted to hear people’s opinions on the name, I think my SO would find it too far “out there” to consider.

I like the suggestion of [name]Jude[/name], and [name]Jackson[/name]. But [name]Justus[/name] is one of my favorite J names, which the SO isn’t a fan of, but by the time I get around to having kids, he might change his mind, especially if it’s in the middle spot.

To me [name]Isaiah[/name],[name]Ezra[/name], [name]Zachariah[/name], and [name]Azariah[/name] are all in a similar family, what is it about [name]Azariah[/name] that makes it seem more feminine than the others?

I love the name [name]Azariah[/name] I think it is beautiful, it isn’t any more feminine then any other boys name ending in a. I would love to meet a little biy names [name]Azariah[/name].
Best of luck.

It sounds like a girl’s name to me. I think it’s the spelling. It’s the Az- (which I relate to Azra or [name]Azalea[/name]) combined with the -ariah ending (which makes me think of [name]Mariah[/name]).

To me, the az-ah-[name]RY[/name]-ah pronunciation does sound like a boy name (like [name]Zachariah[/name], as you mentioned). Unfortunately, I don’t think anyone will pronounce it that way. When I first saw it, I thought it was pronounced a-ZAR-ee-ah or a-ZARE-ee-ah which both sound like girl names to me. I think [name]Zachariah[/name] seems more masculine because it is a more common name, and it has the very well-known “[name]Zach[/name]” prefix.

What about Azarian? It could be pronounced az-ah-[name]RY[/name]-an or ah-ZAR-ee-an, which both seem more masculine to me.

I love it. And it’s definitely usable for a boy! (It’s a male name from the Bible.) I was actually [name]JUST[/name] thinking about this name yesterday for some reason. I’d love to see someone use it for a boy!

I’m with slave bracelets - the name is both tragic and a girl’s name because of the famous ‘a dingo took my baby’ case. It happened before I was born - but is such a famous case, and so tragic that I think the name is absolutely linked to that case for anyone in Australia and NZ.

We’re planning on naming our little guy [name]Azariah[/name] when he comes this fall. I love the name, its meaning and history. Nicknames - [name]Ry[/name], [name]Riah[/name], Az.

Our struggle too is with the middle name - my husband likes [name]Azariah[/name] [name]Daniel[/name] - I’m not so sure. Our other boys have family names as middle names (Manasseh [name]Randall[/name], and [name]Cassius[/name] [name]Jackson[/name]) - I like [name]Azariah[/name] [name]Stephen[/name], as it includes another family name - my husband is not so fond of that one.

Good luck!

I love [name]Azariah[/name]! I don’t think it sounds feminine at all. Maybe try a middle name that has a strong consonant ending like [name]Jack[/name] to give it more kick. I, too, went with an unusual OT boys name, Zepheniah (nn Zeph and Zephen). I say go for it, if names like [name]Noah[/name] and [name]Ezra[/name] can be found masculine so can [name]Azariah[/name].

[name]Hezekiah[/name] and [name]Zedekiah[/name] are maybe a little more strong in the consonant department and have the qualities as [name]Azariah[/name].

While searching for little boy names I came across [name_u]Azariah[/name_u] and fell in love with it! I finally just got my husband to agree to it last night. So we are doing [name_u]Azariah[/name_u] for a boy. Now we just have to figure out a middle name lol
