It’s always good to read what’s happening in Arkansas. I like the names below.

I have a question for you, Dantea. I’ve asked my black friends but none of them could give me a reply. Perhaps you’ve asked some of yours the same question: why do African-Americans use apostrophes in many of their names? Is it an African custom I’m not aware of? Is it to separate syllables? I can’t figure it out. I know that African-Americans are some of the most creative baby namers on the planet (Mormons are the other group believe it or not) but I really don’t like the apostrophes at all.

[name_f]Aerial[/name_f] - a trapeze artist, perhaps?
[name_f]Ivanka[/name_f]* - Have the Trumps settled in your area lately?
Faviana - Favian and [name_m]Flavian[/name_m] are boys names so this is pretty!

I took an African-American Lit class a few semesters ago and we had an hour long discussion about African-American baby names. From what the black girls in the class could tell me, they apotrophes and the other creative spellings and the adding ons and the how they tend to make up their own names began as a way to separate their names from the names of the other people around them. The girls in class said that the African culture was stolen from them and they were forced to assimilate into our society so originally, it was to try to claim back something for themselves, to differentiate themselves from everyone else, to give themselves some of their own culture. Now, they said, it’s because it’s like tradition to do those sorts of things, it’s just part of their culture now.

And I will agree. They tend to be very creative and interesting. There’s some weird ones, but I actually like a lot of the more interesting ones (not the Deshawns and the Kevonte’s but the [name_f]Nolita[/name_f]'s and [name_f]Quintaysha[/name_f]'s are pretty).

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] that doesn’t offend anyone some how >.>

I’ve also noticed that there are several [name_f]Asian[/name_f] babies that seem to have the apostrophes and hyphens in their names which, when I’ve met them, were recently moved over here and were doing it to a) fit in to the local naming conventions and b) to help them separate syllables and sounds that were hard to say without the pause.

Also, in the Cherokee language when you use an apostrophe, it’s for a pause. You pause before moving on to the next part. It’s the same with double letters. A double TT would go like t (pause) t. Like between suit tie.

Anyway, hope that helps at all.
