babies dressed as animals

My mom and I were browsing in a baby store today and I was looking at this hat that looked like a puppy. My thoughts are that if a baby’s cute and a puppy’s cute, a baby dressed as a puppy is doubly cute. My mom didn’t like it because she doesn’t like the idea of dressing him to look like prey. Now, I had no intentions of wrapping him in rabbit fur and throwing him in a den of wolves, and I feel pretty confident that there aren’t going to be predators trying to steal him out of the house, the car, or anywhere else he would reasonably be found. I don’t even know any dogs that will be in close enough proximity to him to be a problem. So does she have a point or is she over-reacting?

Question: have their been plagues of zombies near your home recently? Local teenagers transforming into fearsome beasts by the light of the full moon? Are you living in a cannibalistic postapocalyptic shadow world where only the strongest survive?

If not, then I think it’s cute, and I’m not able to follow your mom’s reasoning at all.

She’s definitely over-reacting. It’s not like a predatory animal is going to swoop in and steal your baby to eat because you dressed him in a cute outfit.

Blades comment made me lol! Your mom spuds like a funny lady. I can’t even begin to understand her reasoning. But I want to hear more stories like this haha.

Ok, I do disagree with your mother. Dressing your child as a puppy would not make them prey!
But I do think its a little demeaning to the child, would an adult liked to be forced into a puppy outfit? [name]Just[/name] a thought. Yes it can be cute, but I honestly think its tacky unless for a dress up party or something

Oh my gosh! I can’t stop laughing!!!

[name]Blade[/name] is right, the reasoning is confusing!

I agree with blade (and laughed quite a bit at that post!) and the others, there’s no logic to what she’s saying. Animals would be able to smell the difference anyway…

I’ve bought bunny, bear and owl hats for my baby, as well as bunny and bear outfits. I think babies dressed in animal outfits are adorable!

@grackym are feetie pajamas, diapers, onsies, and bibs also demeaning? As an adult I wouldn’t want to dress in any of those things.

I think cute puppy hats and bear suits are beyond adorable.

Um, people dress their kids up as animals all the time, it’s called HALLOWEEN! lol

Your mom is overreacting, there is nothing wrong with dressing your kid up as a puppy or even a rabbit. It’s not like your using the baby for target practice.

To be fair, I have seen teenagers and even adult women wearing hats that looked like animals. So while not every adult wants to dress like a puppy, apparently some of them do.

Also, you guys are funny. Some of the things she comes up with, if I heard from anyone else, I’d just laugh and ignore, but when it’s coming from MOM, it takes on a much stronger air of credibility.

[name]Alex[/name], maybe you should start a thread for stuff your mom says. I’d subscribe. Seriously, PREY? I LOLed big time.

Please, buy your child all the owl, fox, puppy, and monster hats you can afford. They are beyond adorable.

Oh, want another good one? In birth class, we were learning about all the things that might be done to the baby soon after birth, like eye ointment, PKU testing, and circumcision. My mom felt the need to announce to the class that neither my father or stepfather was circumcised. I, for one, had absolutely no desire to know this information, and I’m willing to bet no one else there did either.

AHAHAHAHAHAHA. I imagine some major facepalming followed on your part. Thanks for the information, Mom!

Puppies aren’t “prey”, unless you happen to know of a local puppy bow-hunting association. Get the hat; it sounds cute. I have a hat that’s like a panda and I have never felt endangered because of it. You can also get mittens that are designed like paws for winter.

I have seen dogs come into the vet after animal attacks, but it’s usually from another dog, not a wolf or bear or whatever it is she thinks is going to be scratching at the door as soon as there’s a baby in here. I’m not planning on dropping him off in the woods, so the wildlife that poses the most danger to him around here are the deer, considering that I’ve had 2 previous car-deer collisions.

Who exactly is the puppy’s natural predator? Are there a lot of mountain lions in your area? Bears? Would you leave your child out in the yard, unattended, wearing a puppy hat?

My nephew’s first Halloween costume was [name]Winnie[/name] the Pooh dressed as a honey bee. A baby, dressed as a bear, dressed as a bee. I think that might have blown your mother’s mind!

I think its beyond adorable when babies are dressed in animal outfits. For my girls’ first Halloween, we dressed them up as a panda and a dinosaur. Cutest thing ever!

I thought of another mom-ism! We were grocery shopping and my mom whispered to me that she wanted to go to Target next. I asked why she was whispering and apparently she was embarrassed for any of the [name]Harris[/name] Teeter employees to hear that she wanted to go shop somewhere else. I get this mental image of a cashier jumping up on the checkout counter, pointing her finger and screaming “traitor!”

I second this.
