@Kiriko right. It’s an u/s that looks for abnormal space [indiciating fluid] in the cerebral column of the developing fetus around 12-14 wks. It provides an early indication of Downs and similar severe defects.
I’m with a new practice this time around, and maybe this is their standard practice. [name_f]My[/name_f] insurance covers everything pregnancy related, so sure Ill take it. It just seems a litttttle …extra?..when Im already getting the NIPT which samples blood for sloughed off placental cells carrying deformities, translocations, 2N, or omissions of alleles on chromosomes 13, 18, and 21 (21 is where Downs occurs).
Granted, the scan and the DNA sampling are evaluating for a condition, from two different angles, so I’m grateful for the thoroughness, even if the idea of aaall of these appts feels … Tiring. I wish all of these scans/samplings etc could all just be knocked out in one day vs all these different appointments. So much back and forth!
