Baby Girl Kansas?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] Ladies,

I expect most of you to be brutal about this name, I’ve read other websites opinions and comments and they weren’t nice.

But before you give me your honest opinions, here’s what I think…

I’ve read some people from Kansas City call it “killa” city now because it’s so trashy but Kansas City is an All-American town. Known for barbecue and jazz! There is also rich Native American history there, which is important to me because my great grandmother was born and raised on a reservation in Kansas state. To me, Kansas seems like a fresh, spunky take on [name_f]Candace[/name_f] or some other hard c names which, (sorry to anyone out there with these names) but sound super 80s and just outdated, or cheesy (candie anyone?)

I understand to anyone from Kansas, it may not make any sense as to why someone would name their baby girl this, maybe it’s just too on the nose, but is it possible Kansas could be a “cowpoke” version of [name_f]Katniss[/name_f]?
Or possibly the sister to the [name_f]Alabama[/name_f] baby girl that everyone seems to be loving?

Honest, thoughtful opinions!
Thank you all for reading!

I’m from Kansas City and I’ve never heard the term “killa” city. Kansas City, Kansas has its rough parts but doesn’t every city? Most of the city is quite nice.

I actually know a girl named Kansas. It’s not a favorite of mine but it isn’t an unusable name. I agree that it has similer sounds to [name_f]Candace[/name_f].

PS, it warms my heart that Kansas City makes you think of jazz and barbecue instead of farms and tornados, which is what everyone else seems to think!

We used Kansas as our sons middle name because my husband is Native American and his reservation is located in Kansas no one has ever said anything negative about it. I say use it.

Oh [name_m]Lord[/name_m], I’d rather be named Kansas than [name_f]Katniss[/name_f]!

I think it’s a really cool word and as a middle it’s fine.

For a first? Let’s just say that while I’d love to have a hip friend named Kansas, I’d sue my parents if they named me that.

I could get behind it as a middle name

I think it might be a bit too much as a first name, it just doesn’t sound as an actual name to me. It’s hard to imagine Kansas on a real person, especially not on a teacher, doctor, politician etc
However, I think it could be a cute nickname to [name_f]Candace[/name_f] or something similar, or you could use a less controversial first name with Kansas as the middle name and call her that.

As a meaningful middle name I think it’s fun but as a first name it feels a little odd.
Same thing goes for any other state for me (minus [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] & [name_f]Carolina[/name_f] as these are actual names).

I’m not a fan of it as a first name (it seems a bit too much), but it might work as a middle. I prefer a lot of other similar-sounding names over Kansas, which I would personally dislike to be named.

I wish it had a familiar nickname to make it a bit more accessible as a first name, but all I can think of that’s intuitive is [name_u]Kay[/name_u]. I love it’s meaning for you but I also would not want to be named Kansas. Maybe do the Starbucks test (give your name as Kansas when you order. Introduce yourself as Kansas to see their reactions)? Maybe everyone will really love it; I just have a hard time picturing it as a first name.

I can’t really see the appeal of Kansas as a name, sorry. Without having been there, my main associations with it are farms and The [name_m]Wizard[/name_m] of [name_m]Oz[/name_m], and it’s not generally considered an exciting place to go. (I’m sure it has lots of great stuff, but the general public perception of it.) I feel like place names only really work if they’re established as a name in its own right beyond the place association ([name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]), or if it’s generally thought of as a cool, interesting place ([name_u]Milan[/name_u], [name_u]California[/name_u]). Somewhere that’s less interesting to most people, would probably seem a bit weird and random.

What about using a Native American name or a jazz-related name- the name of a performer, group, jazz venue… even just [name_u]Jazz[/name_u]? (I met a girl once whose middle name is [name_u]Jazz[/name_u], because her father loves jazz music!)

I saw someone on a local mom page (I’m from the Midwest) that spelled it Cansais. That’s just bonkers to me.

I think it would be difficult to be taken seriously as an adult with the name Kansas.

Kansas? No way…aside from it just not sounding all that nice, I can only imagine the sexual jokes about “you’re not in Kansas anymore…” Wouldn’t stick anyone with that. Kansas & [name_f]Alabama[/name_f]…really? Sounds like there might be some IQ issues with the parents…

I’m just not a big fan of ‘place’ names, even the well established ones. I dislike Kansas, [name_f]Alabama[/name_f], [name_u]Paris[/name_u], [name_u]Camden[/name_u] and [name_u]Bristol[/name_u] all equally as given names. In the middle name spot I think it’s more usable, but it’s definitely outside my comfort zone. There are some places I think have lovely sounds e.g. [name_f]India[/name_f] and [name_f]Alaska[/name_f], but for me I think it being a place really puts me off, and as I dislike the sound of Kansas (I also dislike [name_f]Candace[/name_f], [name_f]Cadence[/name_f] etc.) that’s an extra reason for me to not be a fan. Sorry!
