We’re trying to find girl names to go with Cox- especially to go with older sister, [name]Leah[/name]…
From very early on in my 1st pregnancy, my husband and I had a terrible time trying to find a name that we both liked, since our taste in names are very different… and also because of our last name: Cox. This surname posed some challenging, though at times hilarious, obstacles during our naming process. (We even came up with a “Cox [name]Baby[/name] Name ‘No’ List: Names We Can’t in Good Conscience Give Our Children”.) Ultimately, we decided on [name]Logan[/name] [name]David[/name], if we ever have a boy, and [name]Leah[/name] [name]Renee[/name] once we found out we were having a girl. Now we’re expecting our 2nd baby, and while we’re still happy with [name]Logan[/name], for a boy, I’m finding myself in the same tough spot as before where we have a limited number of usable girl names, and every one I suggest is met by my husband with utter apathy.
I like simple, pretty, somewhat girly names with a sweet feel to them (especially with an “L” sound in them), like [name]Kaylee[/name], [name]Olivia[/name], and [name]Emily[/name], but I can’t use any of these because they’re too popular at the moment, and would later end up causing confusion in school (I was one of 6 [name]Elizabeth[/name]'s in my immediate age group at school- it was pretty annoying- and my husband’s name is [name]Mike[/name], so he understands that problem all too well).
He likes [name]Morgan[/name], which I agree would be cute with his mom’s middle name, [name]Marie[/name] (my suggestion, though the middle name isn’t set in stone- I just thought they sounded good together), but for some reason, I’m not really feeling the name [name]Morgan[/name]- it almost feels too harsh-sounding next to [name]Leah[/name].
I really like [name]Amy[/name] and [name]Riley[/name], but I’m leaning more and more toward [name]Lily[/name], even though it made our original ‘No’ List for the possible shortening to ‘[name]Lil[/name] Cox’- I’m rethinking whether that might ever even be an issue for a girl, especially since the connection would more likely be made to her being the “[name]Lil[/name]” of the two sisters, rather than anything to do with poking fun at our last name. Any thoughts or suggestions?
I’m not sure a modern [name]Lily[/name] would necessarily get shortened to [name]Lil[/name], so I personally would find [name]Lily[/name] usable. But if you’re trying to stay away from popular names, lovely [name]Lily[/name] has to get axed.
If you’d like to femme up [name]Morgan[/name], I would highly recommend the [name]Morgana[/name] variant. I think [name]Morgana[/name] [name]Marie[/name] flows well and looks lovely, and you get some bonus Arthurian associations.
You might also like [name]Moriah[/name]?
I hate to point it out, but [name]Morgan[/name] ends with “organ,” which might be trouble with Cox.
[name]Leah[/name] and [name]Cecily[/name]
[name]Leah[/name] and [name]Amelia[/name] ([name]Amy[/name]/[name]Milly[/name])
[name]Leah[/name] and [name]Mary[/name] “[name]Molly[/name]”) - honouring your [name]MIL[/name]
[name]Leah[/name] and [name]Ottilie[/name]
[name]Leah[/name] and [name]Abigail[/name]
[name]Leah[/name] and [name]Lyra[/name]
[name]Leah[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name]
[name]Leah[/name] and [name]Honor[/name]
Oh, I don’t know that I’d really recommend [name]Leah[/name] and [name]Rachel[/name] for sisters. Theirs was a very complicated relationship - a lot of jealousy.
[name]Leah[/name] is around #30 so I’m taking that as a ballpark of where you cut off popularity. Although of course that stuff varies a lot with area.
[name]Lily[/name] is at #15, so that is a fair bit higher…I do like the name though and I agree the [name]Lil[/name] thing isn’t super likely to be a problem.
[name]Sarah[/name] and [name]Anna[/name] come to mind, [name]Laura[/name] and [name]Lauren[/name] are also nice to keep going with your L theme.
I like [name]Lily[/name]. I never would have thought about the [name]Lil[/name] Cox thing, but you do make a good point. Some other suggestions:
[name]Leah[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name]
[name]Leah[/name] and [name]Carly[/name] (full name [name]Scarlett[/name])
[name]Leah[/name] and [name]Marley[/name]
[name]Leah[/name] and [name]Lexi[/name] (full name [name]Alexandra[/name])
[name]Leah[/name] and [name]Lina[/name] (full name [name]Emelina[/name] or [name]Katalina[/name])
Thanks for all the suggestions! [name]Even[/name] though I like the name [name]Morgan[/name], I was actually trying to stay away from most of the Arthurian references to [name]Morgana[/name] ([name]Morgan[/name] la [name]Fey[/name]), because it’s such a depressing story, and depending on the many popular versions of the Arthurian legend, [name]Morgana[/name] is portrayed as a very negative character (or at least in very negative circumstances). I’m staying away from any Biblical references to [name]Leah[/name] for the same reason. I’m also more than a little hesitant to give my child the initials: M.M. Cox (it wouldn’t take a mean child or teen long to catch on to that one). I also considered shortening my mom’s name and substituting that for a middle name, but while trying out ‘[name]Morgan[/name] [name]Jo[/name]’, the nickname ‘Mojo’ instantly popped into my head. Not happening. Throw in the comment about M ‘organ’ (good catch, by the way). I think I finally have a few logical reasons to give my husband why [name]Morgan[/name] is off our list. Thanks for the help, everyone!
