Baby name Magnolia! Opinions please

Hello everyone!! I just wanted your thought on the baby name [name]Magnolia[/name]! I think its so beautiful but i would love some opinions! And also do you think it would be possible to have a magdalena an a magnolia in one family? Or are they too similar? And what nickname would you give [name]Magnolia[/name] if one at all

Thank you in advance!!!

[name]Hi[/name]! [name]Magnolia[/name] is such a mixed reaction to me. I love the flowers and the trees and I can see wanting to evoke that with a name! Also, this is a very frilly, feminine name and although I tend not to ultimately love those for my own use, I totally get the appeal and love to hear names like that.

However, I’m not a huge fan of the [name]Mag[/name] syllable, in any name (even though I really love [name]Magdalena[/name] in a clunky kind of way). Also, the no syllable is then kind of a negative follow up. Finally, and it’s hard to explain why, the name kind of rings old-lady bells to me (since it’s so “old south” maybe?) as well as sultry/sexy bells (since the flower is so lush, and the whole southern belle thing). Those aren’t exactly bad, but they’re not positive for me either.

So that’s the full run down on [name]Magnolia[/name] for me. A name I neither love nor hate but one that still is pretty strong in reaction. If I met a little [name]Magnolia[/name] I think it would grow on me.

I think in terms of [name]Magnolia[/name] and [name]Magdalena[/name] it depends on the relationship. If they’re sisters? That seems bound to set them up for confusion. Mother and daughter? Probably fine by me (I’m a [name]Jessica[/name] who daydreams of [name]Jessamine[/name] - probably will never use it though). Cousins or anyone who doesn’t live under the same roof? Seems totally fine to me.

All best!

I really like Magnolia but my husband hates it. :frowning: I’ve seen Maggie, Nola and Lia suggested as nn for this; I’ve also considered Meg. Personally I would try to use the full name but 4 syllables is a lot for everyone to keep up with so I would also choose an optional nn.

I would avoid having Magdalena and Magnolia in the same family since they have the exact same beginning sound. Both are beautiful names though! Magdalena is my favorite of the two.

Edited to add: I made the assumption that these would be sisters.

I think a [name]Magnolia[/name] and a [name]Magdalena[/name] would be too close in one family. It would be better if both of them didn’t start with the same exact three letters. [name]Just[/name] for example, [name]Melusine[/name] and [name]Magdalena[/name], or [name]Marisol[/name] and [name]Magdalena[/name]. Unless they would hardly ever see each other.

On [name]Magnolia[/name] in general, I just heard of [name]Magnolia[/name] TVs…not sure if that is a strong enough connection to deter you or even if a lot of people have heard of them.

I may be in the minority but I dont like it for a human, it works better for a thoroughbred horse or champion show dog because of its cutesy southern charm, I cant imagine meeting a 20, 30, 50 year old [name]Magnolia[/name] and taking the name very seriously.

I mentioned it right now to my husband and he said he cant put his finger on what he doesn’t like about it for a girl but that it feels a little “stripper-ish” to him. That being said I dont think it matters if you have a Magdelena in the family and want to use it. I would go for it unless they would be siblings because that might get confusing.

I adore [name]Magnolia[/name], although I think it might be better in the middle spot. Something like [name]Lucy[/name] [name]Magnolia[/name] would be gorgeous! It makes me think of the song [name]Magnolia[/name] by The Hush Sound.

I think it is a cute name.

I actually have a 2 year old named [name]Magnolia[/name] [name]Clare[/name]. We call her [name]Maggie[/name]. I had considered calling her [name]Nola[/name] but I wanted her to have a name that wasn’t too unique. I have loved her name for years. She was named after the heroine in the musical Showboat.

I adore [name]Magnolia[/name]! i know a 2 year old by that name, and I think it’s lovely. I am from the south, and simply love magnolia trees. Also the nn [name]Maggie[/name] is classic and sweet!

go for it!

I’m actually not a huge fan. :*( It seems to be a huge hit on Nameberry, and I like used to love the nn [name]Maggie[/name], but it’s just got this weird vibe to me that I can’t really put my finger on. I like [name]Magdalena[/name]/[name]Magdaline[/name]/[name]Magda[/name] a lot more.

I don’t really think [name]Magdalena[/name] and [name]Magnolia[/name] could be sisters (unless they went exclusively by [name]Dolly[/name]/[name]Lena[/name] and [name]Nola[/name] or something, but that’s practically impossible to ensure would happen), but I think it’d be fine for cousins or something like that.

I really like it. I think [name]Magnolia[/name] and [name]Magdalena[/name] are too similar for sisters but not for cousins or something like this. I think [name]Nola[/name] and [name]Maggie[/name] and great nicknames.
