Baby name Maira

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone.

We have a 4 month old girl that we named Hanora at birth. As soon as we came home, my husband and I knew we made the wrong choice. Finally, we have decided to deal with the potential embarrassment and change her name.

The name we believe we want to switch to is [name_f]Maira[/name_f]. It’s the [name_u]Irish[/name_u] version of [name_f]Mary[/name_f], and is pronounced May-ra.

Would love to hear thoughts on this name. I don’t see it mentioned very often here. Her brothers names are [name_u]Liam[/name_u] and [name_m]Eamon[/name_m], and we prefer to stick with [name_u]Irish[/name_u] names.

It’s nice! I will say my default pronunciation would be MAIR-uh (mair rhyming with care) or even MY-ruh, but I think it’s an easy correction to make.

I really am attracted to it and have been since meeting the first and only [name_f]Maira[/name_f] so far in my life though she said hers (MY-ruh)

These things adapt of course but I had thought it was My-ra /Moy-reh in [name_u]Irish[/name_u] pronunciation?
It’s very pretty!

Don’t worry about the embarrassment - my brother changed his son’s name after a couple of months and 14 years later, a joke would have been made about it (to him, not his child) maybe 2-3 times since then (from my other brothers).

I really like [name_f]Maira[/name_f]! I love the sound, so pretty. I prefer spelling [name_f]Mayra[/name_f] though
