Baby Names for the Next Generation - Predictions By Pam

Hello Berries, here is an interesting article in the UK’s [name_m]Daily[/name_m] Mail newspaper. Predictions are from Nameberry’s [name_f]Pamela[/name_f] [name_m]Redmond[/name_m] Satran. I’ve bolded my faves. What are your faves?

What will our children be calling their babies? Names of the future look to nature with [name_u]Everest[/name_u], [name_m]Beach[/name_m] and [name_u]Nile[/name_u] among top predictions by [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] Whitelocks

[name_u]Baby[/name_u] names [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] and [name_m]Ethan[/name_m] belong to [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Boomer and Generation X parents; while [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] and [name_m]Asher[/name_m] continue to hold top spots in polls for millennial moms. But what about the next generation of parents?

[name_f]Pamela[/name_f] Satran, the woman behind the website Nameberry.com and author of several name books, believes that the world map will be a major source of inspiration for parents in the next baby-naming ‘style wave’ - with nature-inspired monikers [name_u]Everest[/name_u], [name_m]Beach[/name_m], [name_u]Nile[/name_u] and [name_f]Oceana[/name_f] predicted among the top choices for the future.

Already this week, the boy’s name [name_m]Beach[/name_m] witnessed a 60per cent spike in popularity. Nameberry pegs it as the perfect pick ‘for parents who relish sun, sand, and surf’ while ‘forest lovers can spell it [name_m]Beech[/name_m], like the tree.’

Meanwhile the unisex name [name_u]Everest[/name_u] was up by nine per cent for girls.

Commenting on the trend, Ms Satran told ABC News: 'There’s a growth in the popularity of ‘place’ names.

‘Place names that are popular today, like [name_f]Savannah[/name_f] and [name_u]Dakota[/name_u], are paving the way to more adventurous place names in years to come.’

Also predicted to be popular down the line are names from ancient cultures.

For example, [name_m]Nero[/name_m] and [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] for boys and [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] for girls.

Ms Satran said her predictions have been pretty accurate to date.

In 1988 she said the name [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] would be popular among millennial moms.

Indeed, over the years it has risen up the charts and in 2012 actress [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] Heigl selected it as for the name of her second daughter.

‘[name_m]Just[/name_m] like fashion forecasters are looking at what’s in style now and predict what will be coming up in 10 or 20 years, we do the same,’ Ms Satran concluded.

‘We look at origins of names, the sounds that are attracting people and pop culture influences.’

Nameberry’s predictions left many commenters divided.

One wrote: ‘[name_m]Nero[/name_m]? Like the emperor who “fiddled while [name_m]Rome[/name_m] burned”…I don’t think so.’

But another added: ‘I really love [name_m]Beach[/name_m] / [name_m]Beech[/name_m]. We are beach and forest lovers. I don’t know if my husband would go for it, but I love names that remind me of those peaceful lovely places.’

WHAT [name_m]WILL[/name_m] OUR DESCENDANTS BE CALLED?

[name_m]Romulus[/name_m]
[name_m]Santiago[/name_m]
[name_m]Smith[/name_m]
[name_m]Willis[/name_m]

Eeeeeeeeh…I hope she’s wrong. Except, I did consider [name_m]Cyprian[/name_m] for my little guy two years ago, but I decided it was too out-there. The only ones that rank as “like,” or “okay,” are [name_f]Oceana[/name_f], [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f], [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] & [name_f]Viveca[/name_f]; [name_m]Apollo[/name_m], [name_m]Cyprian[/name_m], [name_u]Everest[/name_u], [name_m]Falconer[/name_m], [name_m]Freeman[/name_m], [name_m]Lazarus[/name_m] & [name_m]Willis[/name_m].

[name_u]Doon[/name_u] and [name_m]Gower[/name_m] are truly horrendous.

I would be in the next generation of parents - I know I wouldn’t use any of the boys list, and only [name_f]Eulalie[/name_f], [name_f]Enid/name_f, [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f], [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] and [name_f]Minerva/name_f for girls. So far, the kids I know from my generation with babies have chosen trendy names with ‘yooneek’ spellings.

[name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f]'s actually dated in Australia it’s a 90’s name here. I don’t think any of them will get popular except [name_m]Rocco[/name_m] which is trendy here.

[name_f]Enid[/name_f] and [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] for girls and [name_u]Everest[/name_u] on a boy are probably as adventurous as I would go. [name_m]Paladin[/name_m] is the only name that is a little too out there for me, I just thing of my character I play in Hearthstone and WoW.

[name_m]Smith[/name_m] (one of my last names! And I got three of them!)

[name_m]Santiago[/name_m] (family name, also for mn slot)

[name_m]Willis[/name_m] (I don’t like this variant but adore [name_m]Wills[/name_m], after great-uncle, mn slot)

[name_u]Percy[/name_u] (it’s about halfway through my fn list, would bump it, if I find a mn that I like)

[name_f]Ines[/name_f] (I adore)

Mirnerva (mn contender)

[name_f]Rowena[/name_f] (it’s actually one of those / names, can’t decided between [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]/[name_f]Rowena[/name_f] nn Rowie, but still mn slot)

[name_f]My[/name_f] thoughts on some highlights/lowlights:
[name_f]Enid[/name_f] - Husband hated it though.
[name_f]Feodora[/name_f] - No, but I love [name_f]Theodora[/name_f].
[name_f]Hebe[/name_f] - Uhhh… maybe if it weren’t an ethnic slur?
[name_f]Ida[/name_f] - I love this, but my husband hated it.
[name_f]Leontine[/name_f] - Like
[name_f]Minerva[/name_f] - [name_u]Love[/name_u].
[name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] - Really like.
[name_f]Rowena[/name_f] - Vetoed, love.
[name_f]Sybella[/name_f] - No, but like [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] and [name_f]Sybilla[/name_f].
[name_f]Ursuline[/name_f] - Like
[name_f]Viveca[/name_f] - [name_u]Love[/name_u]!

BOYS

[name_m]Enoch[/name_m] - [name_m]Enoch[/name_m]. Oh, [name_m]Enoch[/name_m]. I wish I could love you. Sorry, I’m just using this as place-holder for clunky E Biblical names, a category I dearly love. But [name_m]Enoch[/name_m] would be lagging behind [name_m]Eliezer[/name_m], [name_m]Elazar[/name_m], Elchanan/Elkhanan, and Ezriel for me, to say nothing of actually-popular names like [name_m]Eli[/name_m] and [name_m]Ezra[/name_m].
[name_m]Florin[/name_m] - [name_u]Florian[/name_u] is nicer.
[name_m]Lazarus[/name_m] - Okay, I love this.
[name_m]Lucius[/name_m] - Much fresher than [name_m]Lucas[/name_m].
[name_m]Nero[/name_m] - I like this but no one else does.
[name_u]Ripley[/name_u] - I bet this goes girl, at least in the US.
[name_m]Santiago[/name_m] - I like this, but it would be odd on a Jew.

[name_f]Sybilla[/name_f]! [name_f]LETTICE[/name_f]! No! Everyone seems to hate my beloved [name_f]Lettice[/name_f]… but at least I’m not the only one who sees it’s potential, on the bright side. [name_f]Sybilla[/name_f] I’m sort of bummed about, but it’s to be expected.

Apart from that, I’m neutral about the majority listed and would argue it’s written for a very American audience, strangely since DM published it.

And it’s a Dailymail article, so. Yeah. No. Some respect was lost, as they say.

I don’t hate [name_f]Lettice[/name_f] but I don’t see it taking off.

I hold more hope for [name_f]Letitia[/name_f]/[name_f]Laetitia[/name_f].

I think [name_m]Beach[/name_m]/[name_m]Beech[/name_m] is way too close to a certain swear word to ever become a top 1,000 name. With the exception of [name_m]Beecher[/name_m] making the list twice, with 7 and 5 babies born, neither [name_m]Beach[/name_m] nor [name_m]Beech[/name_m] has made the extended SSA list since at least 2000.

I like [name_f]Enid[/name_f], [name_f]Feodora[/name_f], [name_f]Thisbe[/name_f], and [name_u]Hero[/name_u] from the girls, and I like some names similar to the ones for boys like [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] (instead of [name_m]Cassian[/name_m]) and [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] (instead of [name_m]Lucius[/name_m]). I also love [name_m]Santiago[/name_m], and I am debating whether or not to put [name_m]Cyprian[/name_m] on my list. I really don’t like [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f], I think it’s a mixture of sound and [name_f]Rihanna[/name_f] associations, plus personal ones.

Well, I did name my daughter after [name_f]Kassiani[/name_f] and my first pick for a future son is [name_m]Cyprian[/name_m], so I’m right on-trend. Despite being a bit too old to be a millennial.

Looks like I’m ahead of the times. [name_f]My[/name_f] puppy’s name is [name_u]Ripley[/name_u].

Well, just because this community loves extremely unusual names like [name_f]Leontine[/name_f] and [name_m]Lucius[/name_m], doesn’t mean it will be popular like [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]. I love [name_f]Leontine[/name_f], but it will never be popular. Same goes for half of these names.

@blade - that’s uncanny! You’re a trendsetter! [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have a crystal ball in your lab? :slight_smile:

[name_f]Glory[/name_f] - love this one! high on my mn list
[name_f]Rowena[/name_f] - a lovely name
[name_f]Cordis[/name_f] - I don’t know if I really like this, but I find it very intriguing

[name_m]Enoch[/name_m] - I actually kinda like this
[name_u]Everest[/name_u] - I don’t love it, but I like the imagery and the “ever rest” sound
[name_m]Otis[/name_m] - I like it
[name_m]Apollo[/name_m] - I like it. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t know if I would use it, but I do like it
[name_m]Beach[/name_m] - I’m not against this, I can see similarities to names like [name_m]Heath[/name_m], [name_m]Bruce[/name_m], and [name_m]Cash[/name_m]–it’s certainly not unpleasant.
[name_m]Cassian[/name_m] - I don’t mind this. It’s sorta cool

For the longest time, I have adored [name_f]Columbia[/name_f], particularly as a middle name, and I was surprised it was on the list.

What years are these predictions for?

The only one I like there is [name_u]Oberon[/name_u], but I love it more as [name_u]Auberon[/name_u]. A girl with the name [name_f]Glory[/name_f] could have some very cringe worthy comments made about her related to the slang innuendo, so that would be a definite no go for me. I can’t see [name_m]Beach[/name_m]/[name_m]Beech[/name_m] as a name either, it’s way too close to the curse word. The idea of a person screaming, “Come here, [name_m]Beach[/name_m]”, on a playground just seems so wrong, but I guess there are worse things that could or have been said.

I guess I’m just way too conservative in my naming choices.

I don’t know, it doesn’t seem to specify. ‘‘The Next Generation’’ - what does that mean?

I really just dislike this article, ha!.
